TRANSCRIPT
Time is an elusive concept but one of its constants is change and that is profoundly true in the world of design.
A competent designer creates evolutions of what we already have, a good designer recreates our environment in ways
that help us see familiar things in a new way but a great designer makes the world become a different place altogether.
For great talents the process of change is like wind in the sails of a ship – it propels them forward and leads them
to revelations and insights that change the way we see and experience the world. The German philosopher Arthur
Schopenhauer once said that talent hits a target nobody else can hit, whereas genius hits a target nobody else can see
and as educators, the faculty of the Hong Kong Design Institute is committed to giving its students the most powerful
sense of vision and creativity combined with a solid foundation in skills and character. We cannot guarantee that our
students will emerge into the world as geniuses as defi ned by Schopenhauer – although some have – but we will make
sure that they graduate as competent designers with the skills required to become good designers and the tools they need,
both practical and emotional, to discover if they have a genius within. The courses we offer and the international reputation
that we have established through our visiting scholars, exhibitions programme and partnerships with overseas universities
ensure that our students enter the workplace ready to make new worlds and fresh perspectives. The emerging voices of
design that we nurture will be the ones who help shape the future of design. As design shapes the way we live and work
the expectations we have of our students and ourselves are high, but that’s as it should be for a school whose mission is
to create the talents for tomorrow, the young men and women who will have the chance to make our world more beautiful,
effi cient and sustainable.

Wong Ka Lam, Miru Graduate of Visual Communication
Miru graduated with a Higher Diploma in Visual Communication in 2009. With a keen interest in expressing her ideas visually, especially through brand identity, she selected the Visual Communication programme – a course which covers a wide range of design disciplines.
During her three years studying at HKDI, Miru accomplished a variety of projects including branding, advertising, visual imaging, web design, typography and environmental design. In addition to learning how to develop creative concepts and use numerous design software programmes, she also built up time management and presentation skills.
Miru’s design and branding achievements were remarkable. She was awarded the Certifi cate of Merit from HKDI, the HAECO (Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited) Scholarship and the Second Runner-up in the HAECO Branding Competition.
Miru continued her studies at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and graduated with a BA (Hons) in Design – Visual Communication. Now she runs her own brand and designs handmade embroidered footwear and accessories. She plans to launch D.I.Y workshops for embroidery and shoe-making in order to promote and preserve craftsmanship in design.

Tsui Yat Sing, Angus Graduate of Fashion Design and Development
Angus graduated with a Higher Diploma in Fashion Design and Development in 2013. His budding fashion design talent was brought to a different level at HKDI where he developed a variety of new skills in design, pattern cutting, garment sewing and communications, providing him with all the tools to succeed as a fashion design professional.
When Angus discovered that traditional fashion industry could cause environmental pollution, he chose to become a sustainable fashion designer. He entered several sustainable fashion design competitions and participated in a cultural trip to London Fashion Week to fi nd out more about sustainable fashion design techniques such as Zero Waste and Upcycling. He was also invited by Friends of the Earth to present a workshop on how to upcycle jeans and trousers.
Angus won numerous design competitions, local and international, including the EcoChic People’s Award Hong Kong 2012, Overall Winner of Hong Kong Design Institute FID Fashion Show 2013, Conscious Fashion Competition 2013, Design Student of the Year 2013 and Young Design Talent Special Mention Award in the Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2013. He was also awarded the HKSAR Government Scholarship 2013 as well as Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund Overseas Postgraduate Study and Professional Training Scholarship 2013 for academic excellence.
Angus is now studying for a BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Nottingham Trent University. He plans to launch his own sustainable fashion design label and showcasing his work in London Fashion Week at Estethica.

Lai Yee Hung, SoilwormGraduate of Product Design and Technology
A student of the Product Design and Technology programme at HKDI, Soilworm was an active participant in various special activities to enrich the learning experience he was offered by HKDI in collaboration with industry partners. An example of this is an exchange trip to “The Design and Emotion Workshop” in the Netherlands, which dramatically expanded his horizons.
Soilworm also entered competitions and picked up numerous national design awards. He won the Design-A Bag Competition 2010 with his Woman Party Bag, was a Finalist in the 21st and 27th Hong Kong Watch and Clock Design Competition organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council, took 1st Prize in the National Final of the 2nd Design and Make Competition for University Students in the Central Southern Provinces and Regions and First Prize in the 2nd Design and Make Competition in the Central Southern Provinces and Regions Regional Competition – Hong Kong, to name just a few. After graduation from HKDI in 2003, Soilworm continued his studies at the School of Design in Hong Kong Polytechnic University and gained a BA (Hons) in Art in Design (Industrial and Product Design). Then, having studied packaging and product design for fi ve years, in 2011 Soilworm teamed up with a partner to found his own brand ‘Stickyline’, which featured his distinctive paper art and design work. Since then, he has established a name for himself designing paper stage costumes for famous local singers. Soilworm loves what he is doing and is now charting a course to success as a professional product designer.

All students of the two-year Higher Diploma programmes will navigate through interdisciplinary design core modules in their studies. They provide a solid framework for cultivating their art and design know-how in their chosen study pathways as well as fostering lifelong passion for creative engagement. There are three major areas: Creative Thinking, Cultural Studies, and Aesthetics and Semiotics.
Discipline Core ModulesCreative Thinking motivates students to adopt diverse modes of thinking in their disciplines through theory and practice. It actively explores hemispheric and divergent thinking to facilitate defi nition and analysis of design problems to the generation of ideas, concept development and evaluation. These thinking skills, which are fundamental for creative practitioners, are demonstrated and tested through active class exercises as well as projects.
Cultural Studies encourages critical understanding of how culture inspires today’s arts and design practices. It enriches students’ research skills in reading cultural issues with respect to social, creative and sustainability contexts. The modules also nurture their aesthetic judgement in various cultural contexts.
Aesthetics and Semiotics inspires understanding and application of aesthetics and semiotics in various design disciplines. It explores systematic ways of studying aesthetics and analysing symbols objectively through observation, recognition, classifi cation and evaluation of natural and manmade objects. Gathering inspiration from their daily experience and social environment, students learn creative ways of introducing symbolic meaning in their work.
