Located in the rich coastline of Siesta Key lies the school of tomorrow. The design is

conveniently placed a few feet from the crossroads of the three major roads that

circulate through the island, therefore becoming the heart of the community. The

schools front faade addresses the community by allowing views into the integralspaces such as the library, arts and crafts room, music rooms, and the third floor

recreational level. Rather than visually close off the school to the public like most

institutions, exposing the schools lively energetic spaces makes a bold statement to

the community. Oriented west to east allows the design to take full advantage of the

southern sun exposure and prevailing winds. Both north and south portions of the

design have southern walls in which feature an array of Kawneer 1600 PowerShades,

which will not only provide energy for the building but also deflects strong southern light.

All classrooms utilize the PowerShades, therefore allowing for glazed facades in which

views of the beautiful gulf, landscape, and the playground. In order to bring natural

light into spaces without producing glare and solar heat gain, InLighten light shelveswere used in diverse areas, such as the cafeteria and all classrooms, to diffuse and

create ambient light. Since energy consumption has become a global crisis, it is that

much more important to integrate a mix of conditioned and unconditioned spaces into

buildings. Having unconditioned spaces alleviates the buildings energy level and

allows for natural ventilation. Research has proven that people experience higher

levels of happiness and body comfort being outside as opposed to inside. Visitors will

first enter into the lobby which then they are only a few steps from the gallery. This

gallery is not just a transitional space that linked the north and south portions of the

design, but can also serve many uses. Uses can vary from displaying artwork to

showcasing Kawneer systems and so teach students about light and sustainability. The

schools cafeteria is defined by a large volume with views of the beach and the

playground. Its large volume also provides shading at the ground level while students

wait to be picked up. The library is characterized by three distinct areas that are

shaded, conditioned, or open to the sky. Security must be of strong emphasis and vital

to the success of an institution. By practicality, the staff and administration offices are

at the forefront of the school and located in the ground level. The offices will also have

natural lighting and views of the playground. Classrooms in the ground floor are

tucked in the back and the remaining are distributed amongst the upper floors. The

most vulnerable space in elementary schools is the playground. For that reason, the

location of the playground dictated the composition of the design. It was only

appropriate to incubate the playground area in between both portions of the building

and so it remains visible from the majority of spaces in the school. Just south of the

design is a lush landscape abundant with trees providing plenty of shade and more

possibilities for outside activities. Integrating Kawneer products and a new outlook on

school design sets the foundation for an unmatched, unparalleled education.
