Dear Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center Ohana:

It has been about 3 months, since our senior center re-opened. The center has increased its classes and club activities from 14 weekly online classes to 37 club and class activities per week in the last few months. Class and club start times are staggered to minimize waiting times to get wellness checks and to check-in on the My Senior Center monitor. There are over 1,300 online activities schedule for 2021, to date, and many in-person and drive-through special events.

Mahalo to Humana for sponsoring 3 in-person BINGO Games this summer at LMPSC. They are hosting additional in-person games to the end of this year with providing great prizes. Thank you also to Hiromi Kawasaki for holding in-person iPhone classes for beginner beginners and Ross Rasmussen for conducting online iPhone classes teaching basic features and functions. Mahalo a nui loa to Lanakila Pacific for their continuing commitment to the 12-week, in-person Digital Tech Workshop for our center members. We also appreciate LMPSC Members Ferdinand Madriaga for conducting a worm composting workshop and Jim Hino for teaching us “How to Use Zoom”. Kudos to George Doi from Premier Benefits Consultants for having a Medicare 101 class, Victor Lim for sharing the history and future plans of McDonald’s Restaurants in Hawaii, Jesse Kalu who performed Poetic Wildlife Reflections: A Musical Journey using handmade bamboo flutes, Congressman Ed Case with congressional updates, and CEO Ron Mizutani who spoke about this career and the exciting programming of PBS Hawaii. Mahalo to Christine Spencer for continuing to provide educational and fun 10 Ways to Love Your Brain workshops and Dr. Michael Cheang for facilitating such interesting and meaningful Topics and Conversations in Aging, and mahalo to the center members for fully participating in these sessions.

In preparation for the SAVERS FUNraiser on August 5, two collection days were scheduled on July 22 and 27. We thank the over 75 center members who participated in this effort to raise money for the senior center. Mahalo to the Chinatown Lions, Roosevelt Leo Club and other volunteers for their kokua!

Thank you to Fusao Nishibun from the City and County of Honolulu’s Real Property Tax Office for informing homeowners on Thursday, July 8 and July 26, 2021.The center members found the information useful and invited other guests to attend. Our mahalo to LMPSC Member Phil Uyehara for conducting an interesting worm composting workshop and Norman Oshiro from MOA Hawaii for his informative Nature Farm gardening workshop.

Each year, Hawaii Pacific Health partners with LMPSC and this year, a lunch drive-through event and virtual health fair was held on Monday, July 12th. We had a lot of positive feedback from center members about how well organized the HPH student presentations were and that they enjoyed all the fresh produce they were given at the drive-through. We are grateful to Jen and Rexie from HPH for helping to organize this excellent event and appreciate Program Specialist Riva Torno’s efforts on behalf of the center

Thanks to the generosity of LMPSC members, we have had the opportunity to schedule tours to Bishop Museum. Members also really enjoyed the excursions to Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens, Bayview Mini Putt and Zipline, and Queen Emma Summer Palace. We also have planned excursions to the Manoa Heritage Center, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Tenrikyo Ko Honolulu, Liliha Public Library, and Mission Houses in the next few months.

During the summer months, center members and LMPSC staff have been walking about a mile a day at Magic Island from 3 to 5 times a week. This activity has helped members who want to increase their physical activity in a beautiful natural setting.

LMPSC Members Amy Bratt, Ben Sarcena, Ferdinand Madriaga, and Mae Hong continue to assist LMPSC’s Custodian Lodi Tapawan with planting fresh vegetables, orchids, and other flowering plants on the senior center’s campus. We appreciate their efforts and all those who give of their time to keep the senior center beautiful and thriving.

In the month of September when the children, teens, and adults are back in school and the teachers and other educational institutions’ personnel are working so diligently, we honor our educators. Lanakila Senior Center would also like to honor its instructors, assistant instructors, and facilitators for their faithful service, sharing their knowledge and time to make the lives of our center members full and happy. We also honor and thank the hundreds of presenters that gave of their time and talent offering over 2,000 online activities and in-person activities this past year and a half, even with the pandemic going on. You are so very special. On behalf of our LMPSC members and staff, we express our deepest gratitude to you.

With much aloha,Susie Chun OaklandProgram Coordinator

Y!OKINAWA NENCHOSA CLUB UPDATE

By Jane Higa

Ukimi Soo Chi (Good Morning)Some of our members are waiting for our club to re-open, but this Covid is making it so hard to have all our members to gather together. Hopefully it gets better so we can be together again. This is what our club does every Thursday morning from 9:00 - 10:30 am.

We open our meeting by doing our morning Exercise, Prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, God Bless America and Hawaii Pono‘i, and sing our Lanakila song. The meaning of our song tells about,

Oh, what a beautiful day, cool breeze blowing byToday is our meeting day at LanakilaDon’t think of getting olderLet’s hold hands together, Live on togetherAs we drink coffee and tea together and the taste of pastry is so onoWe learn, we talk, we listen and we danceWe feel young at heart and live to be 100 years old

This, our members miss.

Due to current CDC and State guidelines, the Center will only allow 25 members to attend our meetings (outdoors). We will slowly start contacting members when we schedule our meetings.

FILIPINO CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

By Wilma Ibay

Looking back last year 2020 when the deadly virus COVID-19 came our LIFE seemed to STOP. Our daily routine changed totally. Restaurants, shopping malls, beaches, social gatherings, etc. we're all restricted. At that time only our phones are the means of communicating with one another. Last year our active members LEONARDO and GORGONIA BULDA had joined our Creator. Due to restrictions we were not able to say our last RESPECT to these beautiful couple. The center opened I believe 3 months ago but only 10 people could convene in person so we waited when more members could come together...Finally on July 10, 2021, 25 members were allowed to come together for DANCING only at the LANAI. No food, 6 feet distancing, no singing, and bring own water. Our first MEETING was awesome. Everyone was HAPPY and EXCITED although not ALL MEMBERS could come and join..AURIE SONSON and LETTY DOLOR both members of F C C H taught us members LINE DANCING which everybody enjoyed. It was nice to be back at L M P S C..Till next time. Salamat ng Marami..Thank you.

JCC 50th Anniversary Celebration

JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

By Clarice Kumura

Even if it is a year and a half late, the Japanese Cultural Club was able to celebrate its 50th Anniversary by doing a drive-thru bento on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the Lanakila Senior Center. We observed all the logistics called for the safety of all members and the general public. It was a huge success as we sold 77 bentos from Natsunoya. In addition to the bentos, members received T-shirts and assorted goodies.

Special Mahalo goes to the officers of JCC beginning with President Mary Sueda and followed by Jeanette Shiohira, Clarice Kumura, Alicia Nagasawa, Jean Sugiyama, Frank Toma and Richard Tada. Mahalo also to Jean Sugihara for sharing her organizational skills. Appreciation also goes to Susie Chun Oakland and the Lanakila Staff. A very special thank you to Kirk and Lori Kageno for their handmade 1,000 cranes artistically shaped like a fan and framed, the poster board announcing JCC 50th anniversary, and the acrylic handmade fortune cookies. They both are super talented.

We are thankful for all of our members who participated in this drive-thru event and those who continue to be active members in JCC. Anyone wishing to receive a copy of our JCC 50th Anniversary booklet should contact Clarice Kumura at 845-1958.

Stay safe and healthy.

Mahalo to Our Teachers

Ken Koike

Sifu Kenny Koike, always has a smile on his face and teaches us how to live a long life with his “Yang” styletai chi techniques, which he learned, from his many resourceful Tai Chi Masters from China and abroad. He always shares the steps through video clips …. as we begin our journey to “become”.A devoted teacher, he never hesitates to recognize his students and appreciates everyone’s desire to learnhis controlled tai chi forms, which include balance, breathing and flowing tai chi movements. My mother, Dorothy Mau, found me Kenny’s class, so I could learn the sword and fan dances from him, inorder to further my Chinese Culture.. The classes are masterfully taught, so we may use them as artfuldance or self defense. Xie XieDorothy and Beverly Mau

Lorraine Chang

Always energetic and a great pianist, Lorraine Chang always opened her classwith jokes. Yes… Life is full of laughs. She impacted us to love dance and todevelop better memory. Her vast repertoire of dance steps and music wasshowcased at the 2019 LMPSC Christmas party at the Japanese Cultural Centeron King St. We will forever remember her love of dance, where we all becameRootin Tootin Cowgirls with … “Achy Breaky Heart” and “God Bless Texas”!

Kumu Hula, Harmony Brighter

Kumu Harmony is a beautiful teacher that radiates LOVE, to all of her students, as she teaches us, the art of hula dancing. Hula is to be danced from the heart and is to be shared. Harmony impacts all of her students to be graceful, happy, and caring. Her magnetic personality is evidenced with her gorgeous smile. She tells us the history and story of the musical piece and dance, so we will be able to perform it with “lovely hula hands, and smiling happy eyes”. Mahalo Nui Loa, to our lovely Lady of Hawaii…..she loves fragrant flowers, is a foody and enjoys the successes, of each of her students.
