The main character in Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond Doss, was raised as a Seventh-day Adventist. After stopping a violent outburst between his parents, he vowed never to touch a weapon and held himself to that standard, even in the midst of war. He worked for 10 months as a joiner during construction of SS America at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1941 and could have received a deferment because his job was essential to the war effort. Doss turned that offer down to serve as an Army medic during World War II. Doss saved the lives of 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa, and went on to become the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor.

Learn more about his incredible story in a special piece from The Virginian Pilot. Hacksaw Ridge is now in theaters.
