PRESIDENTS PROMOTING RECOGNITION

OUR TERMS OF REFERENCE

1. The Committee shall be composed of a chairperson plus two other members, all selected by and from Executive Council and a President’s representative selected by the presidents at the September Presidents’ Conference every even numbered year.

2. The Committee shall promote, encourage and strive to foster an atmosphere of appreciation and recognition at all levels of the union.

3. The Committee shall review input of the National President, Executive Council and the Membership on an “as required basis”.

4. The Committee shall review the By-Laws and Regulations relating to honours and awards to ensure they are adequate and accurate, and if necessary recommend changes to the Executive Council.

5. The Committee shall address all issues referred to the Committee by the Convention, National President, Executive Committee, Executive Council, or as prescribed by Regulation.

6. The Committee shall implement approved programs and policies relating to Honours and Awards.

7. The Committee shall meet as required with the approval of the National President, to discuss issues relevant to Honours and Awards.

• While not directly under the respon- sibility of the committee, UTE Locals are empowered to award union service pins of 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years to members who have served the interests of the membership over these periods of time.

• These pins are presented annually, on the recommendation of local union officers or either national.

CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT (Al Lough)

• The nomination can be recommended by a member of a Local, Local Officer or an Officer of the Executive Council;

• Nominees have: demonstrated their commitment to achieving the aims and objectives of UTE; and

• Exhibited exemplary service at any level of UTE.

• The award shall be a suitably inscribed certificate.

LONG SERVICE PINS

• Local Presidents and Locals are responsible for keeping record of the service of their activists;

• Pins are available for 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 (soon to be 35) years of service;

• Local Presidents must request the service pins through their RVP.

AWARD OF MERIT (Godfroy Côté)

• The nomination can be recommended by a member of a Local, Local Officer or an Officer of the Executive Council ;

• Nominees must have: demonstrated their commitment to achieving the aims and objectives of UTE;

• Exhibited exemplary service at any level of UTE; and

• Accumulated service at any level of UTE for a minimum of five (5) years.

• This award is a suitably inscribed plaque.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

• The nomination can be recommended by a member of a Local, Local Officer or an Officer of the Executive Council ;

• Nominees must have: demonstrated their commitment to achieving the aims and objectives of UTE;

• Accumulated service at the local and national level of UTE for a minimum of fifteen (15) years; and

• Exhibited exemplary service at the local and national level of UTE.

LIFE MEMBERSHIPContinued

• The award is a suitable inscribed plaque; and

• The choice of a UTE ring or an engraved UTE watch.

• Life Members have all the rights as described in By-Law 3, Section 3;

Humanitarian Award

• The nomination can be recommended by a member of a Local, Local Officer or an Officer of the Executive Council;

• To be a member of UTE in good standing;

• Demonstrated their commitment to humanitarian cause where there is extreme need;

• Exhibited exemplary service to others within their community, their country or throughout the world; and

• The award shall be a suitably inscribed plaque and will include an award of $2500.

SCHOLARSHIPS

• Not always determinate on grades;

• Open to UTE members, their spouses and dependants;

• National scholarships $2,500.00;

• Regional scholarships $1,000.00;

• Deadline for applications June 15th of every year.

I.C.A. Sponsorships

• UTE sponsors 1 student and 1 member to go with responsible of I.C.A. to work on one of the I.C.A. projects each year;

• Work is not limited to manual labour - may help in schools etc;

• Application form and Essay required.

RECOGNITION

As local Presidents we have a responsibility to promote the recognition of our membership, executive members

and activists.

HOW CAN LOCAL PRESIDENTS PROMOTE HONOURS AND

AWARDS? IDEAS?• Maintain Honours and Awards as a standing agenda item at our

AGM’s - talk about awards and do presentations.

• Create local records containing the years of service of our activists so that service pins can be ordered

• Post the notices on the bulletin boards, in your local newsletter or on your website

• Ask to send out notices through the Director re: ICA at United Way time, the UTE scholarship etc.

• Create a local email distribution list which can be helpful for sharing ALL information.

• Nominate your members for awards.

HOW CAN PRESIDENTS RECOGNIZE MEMBERS AT

A LOCAL LEVEL?

• Thank you letters/cards;

• Certificates of Appreciation, service, etc.;

• Union recognition ceremonies - do it publicly;

• Mention at the AGM; and

• Mention on the local website or newsletter.
