The Kaatalogue - Reference Charts H O P E These charts transcend the familiar lyric-plus-chord-symbol format. They include all of the correct harmony, moving bass lines, all of the lyrics as sung on the records, a few of the distinctive drum fills, and some sound effects. The presentation clearly illustrates the structure - all of the intro, link, solo, and fade sections are outlined with attention to the odd 2/4 bars and the numerous variations Klaatu cram into the 'repeated' sections. Finally there is a commentary section explaining some of the musical nuances, or giving more detail which would otherwise clutter the chart. Where available there is some insight into the writing or recording with a comparison to demo material. 2 We're Off You Know 5 Madman 7 Around The Universe In Eighty Days 10 Long Live Politzania 14 Politzania (The Politzanian National Anthem) 16 Politzania (Finale) 17 The Loneliest Of Creatures 22 Prelude 24 So Said The Lighthouse Keeper 27 Hope

TAG: C B7 C#m/A# Amaj7 Journey be-gins the journey be-gins C#m/A# or A#ø7 or A#m7b5 or Bbm7b5 This chord functions as a passing chord. The bass is descending in semitones. The upper part of the chord is held into the Amaj7 which follows. The dots have been added to indicate the beat during the "rehearsed" adlibs in the CODA: !C !C# !D !D# E . C7 . E . The organ plays B and F together as a chord. Then the same pattern is repeated using D and Ab Most of the solo sections can be played as power chords. The shape simply moves down then up the E minor scale. ================================================================================

While it is essentially the same chord it has been notated with respect to F# being the root as it is the lowest note. Ab(6) C/G soar right past the planets The (6) F is in the vocal. The second verse adds a D in the piano over the Fsus4 making Bb/C. RECITATION: The string line in single notes is represented thus Bb==F===Eb==Ab== 1 2 3 + 4 + 1 2 3 + 4 + G=============G#=G==G#=G=========G#=G==G#= C ` Csus4 ` fast as we The + coincidentally corresponds to an augmented fifth. The sus4 is barely audible in the final mix. The Salem Hill note-for-note cover version omitted that bar completely. VERSE three: The harmony is not the same as the other verses; there is an ambiguous major and minor tonality. Cdrone The computer noises can be simulated with the notes C D Eb played sequentially fairly rapidly. C C#o C C#o C C/Bb Fm/Ab C/G When we reach our departure point there will be celebrations In this line the bottom note of the C chord wobbles up to C# and is notated as C#o the triad C# E G Again, this is very subtle in the final mix, as is the Fm There is no 2/4 bar in the fourth line. ================================================================================

================================================================================ PLAYING TIPS The accompaniment on the recording consists almost entirely of rising arpeggios played as sixteenths at a slow tempo. Each arpeggio is a group of four notes and while they are based on a family of chords many of the groups contain colourful non-chord tones. The chord names in the chart represent the basic chord. In the VERSE and PROLOGUE the Db pattern alternates between Dbadd2 and Dbsus2 (ie with and without the third). There is no real CHORUS in the structure of the song but this part includes a little repeat of the song title. One of the distinctive sounds in the song is the weird F chord which is treated differently in each VERSE and also in the SOLO and FADE. It is an exciting passing chord, much like a suspension of the tonic (E) but with the added tension of the bass moving up from E to F. The melody variously sings B or C. Only the arranging genius in the layering of instruments and vocals prevents this from sounding cacophonous. Surprisingly the chord can be voiced fairly easily on a solo guitar: Fmaj7#11 133200 making the notes: F C F A B E There is a second weird passing chord which connects the Bm and B. 'Bm 'B5b9 B scanned the cosmic void The descending melody sings C natural over the B. There is one variation which includes a parallel harmony: 'Bm 'Bsus4b9 B gazed out to the stars D C B F# E D# F# F# F# ) this fifth is B B B ) held throughout Another recurring motif is the descending bass line under the dominant chord (B). Again, this part is slightly different throughout the song: Depressingly heavy in the VERSE section where it jumps abruptly to Am. Absolutely sublime in the INTERLUDE when used in the parallel minor key. There are several short bars in this transcription. The timing could possibly be rubato, but careful counting reveals the beats as depicted. ================================================================================

================================================================================ PLAYING TIPS D(6) Hope is like a lighthouse After the INTRO stridently sets up the key of F the first chord turns out to be the submediant major! Woloschuk inexplicably sings the note B - one of the two worst notes on which to start a song in the key of F. In the subsequent verses and also in live performance John sings C. It's such an appropriately ethereal sound it is unlikely that the B is a mistake or that he was singing flat.... What IS that instrument in the INTRO? It sounds like very pure flute tones (possibly a mellotron) but there is a peculiar overtone. Displaying the notes in a spectrum analyser reveals the very clear dyads plus the first two overtones - the octave and the octave-plus-perfect-fifth. The odd part is the relative strengths of these overtones. For the lower line of the dyad the octave is very strong. For the upper line of the dyad the fifth is very strong. Thus the perceived harmony is a seventh alternating major and minor. 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + |E F G E F G E D | Bold = louder Overtones |C D E C D E C B | |A Bb C A Bb C A G | Italic = upper line |F G A F G A F E | Normal = lower line Fundamental |A Bb C A Bb C A G | pitches |F G A F G A F E | It is possible that all of these notes were played as pure tones onto separate tracks which were then balanced accordingly, however that seems unlikely. In the live versions only the octave overtones are present implying that only the dyads are actually played. ALBUM VERSION - Beat four LIVE VERSION - Beat four

The relationship is consistent up the scale. On beat two the overtones of the lower line A is not the same as the upper line A on beat four. How very odd!?!? ALBUM VERSION - Beat two
