COMPOSER’S NOTES

This anthem is inspired by Hebrews 13:1-2 which says,“Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertainstrangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

In this music, I wanted to create a feeling of holy expectation aswe reflect on those around us who are in need of kindness. Asyou sing, imagine a street scene with people passing silently. I hope the quiet, reflective spirit of this anthem will help youbecome attuned to God’s calling to minister to others.

Sometimes we look at those in need as somehow less favored or less deserving. This scripture from Hebrews and the words ofthis anthem remind us that there is a spark of divinity and holyworth in every person. All people are made by God in God’s own image.

The anthem ends by encouraging us to be the messengers ofGod’s love with the line, “If we take the time to show love andcare, it’s like there are angels everywhere.”

Sing the text with a sense of holy mystery as you reflect on God’spresence in the world, around and through us.

This piece would work naturally with visuals on a screen. You may choose to sing the music before or after a sermon or skit about ministry to those in need. I would love to hear how youchoose to use it in your church.
