Hope Happenings

Pastor’s Message

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. God's mercies never come to an end,

they are new every morning. Great is God's faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Step by step, even as I write, we are walking through the process of finally obtaining our occupancy permit. God willing, soon after you read this, our celebrating will be evidenced by some VERY joyful worship as well as a few tears of gratitude -- probably more than a few!! What a learning process this has been. And how blessed we are by all the people God has sent to walk alongside us, overcoming hurdles we couldn't have imagined, let alone anticipated. Members of City staff have really done their best to be accessible and they have patiently answered our questions, helping us navigate through the twists and turns of all the

things we didn't know. Thank you, God! And thank you to so many unsung heroes among us who have done whatever has been necessary to keep us moving forward! Praise God, we ARE almost home!! This journey has been tremendously frustrating, but God has been faithful through it all. So have all the leaders of this church. Others might have given up, but they have persevered, endured and inspired us all by their dedication. Hope not only survived, but our faith and our life together has deepened. God has

blessed us richly. Our church is stronger. We are humbler AND wiser. We are closer to one another and our community than we've ever been. But that growth, wisdom and the newfound strength of our relationships hasn't come about without our experiencing some pain. With God's help, though, that pain will give way to deep resilience and to a greater commitment than ever before to use this building as a resource for growing God's kingdom. May God continue to help us use this new home as a base from which we will build bridges, take down walls and share in word and deed, far and wide, God's love for every person,

especially the least, the lost and the long-suffering. When we dedicate our new building 2:30 pm Saturday, February 17, we will be celebrating God's faithfulness and steadfast love. We will be celebrating how God continues to bring new life and resurrection hope out of our Good Friday experiences. It has been a difficult journey, but we've been learning that God will not let the bad stuff we face have the last word. God always has the last word and,

with God's help, you and I really are able to live as "Easter people" in a Good Friday world. In fact, if things were easier, maybe we would think we might have done it on our own?! Please join us 7 pm Ash Wednesday, February 14, for worship as we gather to acknowledge our brokenness and all the ways we fall short of God's plan for us. And then join us for soup suppers and mid-week worship

on the following Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm. Fellowship will refresh and renew us, as will our 7 pm worship. In Scripture, prayer, familiar and simple music as well as silence, we will focus on rest, refreshment, renewal and the reminder that you and I ARE God's beloved children! With you in God's Gracious Grip,

Pastor Sandy

From Hope’s Council

Dear Friends in Christ,

We have learned patience, and we have learned that challenges can only be overcome

by taking one step at a time. Often that process has been agonizingly slow. The moving truck came, we set up the church to show what it looks like when ready for business, passed fire inspection and moved all final items out of Redhawk – again with an army of cheerful

helpers. Our landscape team finished its work and received high marks from the landscape inspector. The fact that the Hope Landscaping Team and helpers did the planting of over 1800 plants, dug big holes for all of those trees, laid

irrigation lines, buried those lines, installed the controls, and mulched three inches over the entire property as volunteers is absolutely amazing. Mack and team completed the wrought iron work, ADA handrails and Neil and team completed the cement work on sidewalks

to meet the exact requirements. The street work was completed and our core team with Neil on his tractor put in the horse trail with amazing speed. As of January 29 we were done with these tasks, and we have passed all of the inspections. Hallelujah – Praise the Lord and

praise all of those helping hands! So many people were able to come to help! We are now in the process of applying for the Occupancy Permit which needed more filing of paper work and documents than we were aware of, such as putting up a landscaping bond or Certificate of

Deposit to assure maintenance of the landscaping for one year. As the owner/builder we have more paper work requirements to fulfill but will meet this challenge as well. The back-breaking work and tremendous sacrifice in physical labor are done! The City is very

supportive and is guiding us through these last steps – they obviously want us to be finished as

well and issue the Occupancy Permit, but need a check mark behind each item. So – we will work through the last hurdles and take each step needed.

Until you get the email that we have the permit, we cannot hold our worship in the building. We sure look forward to sending out the message that we have met ALL requirements!

Each newsletter for this past year has included the thanks for so many hands doing God’s work. We offer

our joyful, emotional prayers of thanksgiving. It has been a long journey, but our congregation’s spirit and generosity in support has been overwhelming. A special thank you and shout-out to our core team of builders, interfaith helpers and prayer ministry for

strength and endurance! We will have 365 days of brand new story in the new church to celebrate life, to build mission, to make a difference in people’s lives, to let our community know how Hope Lutheran Church on Vallejo is an important part of our community’s outreach and walk of faith.

The congregation has approved the church’s budget for 2018 and as soon as we can hold our Annual Meeting in the church, we will have our celebration of Living Generously/Stewardship Drive. Let us pray together to continue our great momentum, and to reaffirm and pledge commitments for our spiritual,

financial and physical support of Hope’s mission and ministry. “God bless this new year in which love overcomes. He is always with us and unfolds great possibilities” is our New Year’s message. May we be ready to see and hear, to use all our senses, to be

aware of all the possibilities that this new facility will offer us. Praise the Lord for his blessings.

With great joy and thanksgiving for all of God’s helpers at Hope. Renate Jefferson

Restore us, O God; let your face shine,

that we may be saved. Psalm 80:3

We are almost into Lent, but there is a story to tell

about the recent Advent season. Among the many healthy trees planted at the new site is one tree that seemed unlikely to survive. It even looks different than the others: instead of a single trunk, it has multiple trunks rising from the root ball. With some amount of optimism, it was planted in a very conspicuous place

– right in the parking lot median. The intense heat of summer added to the challenge facing this tree’s chances of survival. After it was planted, we waited…and waited…and waited. Very often, Holly would check to be sure it was getting enough water, but

not too much. Bonding through word and prayer, we waited…and waited. Right through the days and weeks of Advent, we anticipated the sign that this tree had been restored.

When you are at the church, be sure to notice the beautiful tree with such bright green leaves! This is the

Women of Hope

Drum Roll, Please! Let’s finally Roll out Romans

Your “can’t wait” opportunity to be involved with a study of Romans is now upon us. Everyone is invited to the Romans Roll-Out session Saturday, February

3, 2018. This is a perfect study as we head into Lent. Delays were not welcome, but may put our study at “just the right time.

When: Saturday, February 3, 8:30, sign-in and light breakfast, 9 - 11:30

Where: Our New Vallejo campus 29043 Vallejo Ave

Who: Hope members, friends, and those you invite

What: Introduction to the book of Romans AND a look into why Martin Luther was so passionate about this book. Materials will be available at a nominal cost. For more information contact Pamela Nevills, [email protected]

This Roll-Out activity is an opportunity to connect with others who are new to Bible study at Hope Lutheran,

and reconnect with others who have attended previous studies. We’ll see a short video that summarizes the entire Old Testament in 5 minutes, take a glimpse at the Apostle Paul and experience some of Martin Luther’s passion for the gifts of grace and forgiveness we receive through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And, as all good Lutherans do, there will be food. A light breakfast will be provided.

All-in-all this is a “not to be missed” activity to learn more about Romans and maybe to discover the 8 week study of Romans is "just right" for you!

If you could not attend the roll out, you can still join a small group or study Romans on your own! Contact Pamela Nevills [email protected]

Our Mission: Anchored in Christ… to Build and Grow Faith

Our Purpose: To share Jesus’ love by reaching out and welcoming all

Our Vision: We will trust God in the midst of what makes us anxious, choose faith instead of fear and serve mission instead of our own comfort.

Our Guiding Principles:

We are servants of God and members of the Body of Christ. We value each other. We practice open and honest communication. We make decisions that we believe are in the best interest of the whole congregation and will bring glory to God.
