WELCOME: YOUR PRESENCE IS A BLESSING

We come to these High Holidays, each of us in our own spot on the continuum between extreme unease and openness to the unknown.

Closing our eyes, we can almost feel the rush of sensation that comes with walking into the open tent: the greetings, the taking of seats, the voices joining with one another in song.

Opening our eyes to the screens in front of us, we are woven together through technology, and through the shared experience of having journeyed through these months together.

Rosh HaShanah celebrates the creation and re-creation of the world. May these services help us commit more deeply to the necessary re-creations we are in the midst of - personally, nationally, globally. Yom Kippur invites us to practice teshuvah, returning to what is most precious, meaningful, and true in our lives.

As in past services, there will be lots of singing. We’ll hear the Torah speak to themes of struggle and transformation. We’ll evoke our breaking hearts with the cry of the shofar (ram’s horn). Kol Nidre calls us to forgiveness and release.

If you are new to our community, don’t worry! Your service leaders will be your guides. Take care of yourselves during services. You are welcome to get up and stretch.

May these High Holiday services be wells of hope from which you can draw in abundance in these uncertain times.

L’shanah tovah! Blessings for a sweet new year.

PSALM 27: A PSALM FOR THESE TIMES

To the Beloved, The Infinite Presence is my light and expanse, Whom should I fear? The Infinite Presence is the strength of my life, What shall I dread? When forces come close seeming to devour me, When narrowness threatens, All that is menacing stumbles and falls. Even as an army of mistrust besieges me My heart does not fear. Even as thoughts and desires rise up against me I still have trust.

One thing I ask, one thing I seek, To awaken to the beauty of each moment as I pass through this world. The Infinite shelters me as I encounter difficulty and pain. The Infinite holds me close in deep and hidden places. And lifts me high upon a rock. Now I can see through to what is true. And I will offer my gifts of thanks I will sing.

Please, Infinite One, Listen to my voice, hear my call. Be gracious with me. Answer me. Please don’t hide from me. Please don’t let me turn away in frustration and despair.

You are my help. Do not let me feel abandoned. Do not let me turn away. In You I am safe. It is you who gathers me in. Teach me Your ways. There is so much to lead me astray. Don’t let me give in to all that torments me, the lies, the illusions, the menacing threats. I must have faith that I can see through all of this I can see the good, the blessings, the ways of life. Let your heart be strong and filled with courage. Cultivate hope.

OPENING INTENTIONS

Blessing for Anyone Who Wasn’t Born Jewish (‘Cause We Know This is a Lot)

May everyone who shares in a Jewish life feel welcomed and integrated. We are deeply grateful to all who have cast their lot with the Jewish people, and for the love and support they give to their Jewish partners and families. We know families come in all forms. We offer special thanks to those who are raising their sons and daughters as Jews and with Judaism. We are a very small people and history has made us smaller. Children mean hope, life and future. We pray with all of our hearts that the gifts and blessings you have given to your family, to the community, and to the Jewish People will come back to you and fill your life with joy and fulfillment.

Adapted from Rabbi Janet Marder

Experiencing the Divine as an unfolding process, a verb rather than a noun, we are more likely to experience ourselves and all of reality as changeable, and continually unfolding.

Estelle Frankel

Welcome is one of the signs that a community is alive. To invite others to live with us is a sign that we aren’t afraid, that we have a treasure of truth and of peace to share.

Jean Vanier

You filled me with hope about the next chapter of the great American story when you used your power to make a difference in our society. Millions of people motivated simply by human compassion laid down the burdens of division...

When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century, let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war. So I say to you, walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide.

WRAPPING OURSELVES WITHIN THE TALLIT

A tallit represents the worldIts four corners are the outer reaches of the knownIts fringes are the subtle teasing of the unknownTo stand wrapped in a tallit is to take your place in the worldTo stand wrapped in a tallit is to take responsibility.

Rabbi Rami Shapiro

As you gather the tzitzit to the center,Open to your own fringes, the edges, margins and knots.

Open to immerse in wholeness, in shalom.

As you hold the tzitzit, open your heart wide.Open yourself to welcome, to offer shalom for all beingsAt the edges, the margins, and those in exile, refugees.

Open to all beings at the fringes of our worlds.

Open to the wisdomOf compassion and courage.

Breathe deep, and honor the powers of sacred presence.

Sharon Shosh Lulyanit

Blessed are You, Life Unfolding, our God, in this place and this time,

wrapping us in holiness and love within the tallit.

WHO SHOULD I SAY IS CALLING?*

An Invitation to the Many Jewish Metaphors for the Sacred

Many people struggle with the dominant image of divinity in western religion - God as a big, powerful man.

When we encounter the metaphors that point to this image, it can be helpful to remember that they are intended not as statements of belief but invitations into an experience. Instead of asking, “Do I believe this?” we can ask of an image, “Where is this trying to take me?”

There are many other Jewish possibilities for spiritual language and experience besides King and Father. In fact, our ancestors enjoyed a much broader palette of metaphors to express their experience of the Sacred than is offered in most Jewish prayer books. Take, for example, the metaphor of water. Psalm 92 reads: “My soul thirsts for God.” Psalm 36: “You give us drink from the stream of your delight.” The prophet Isaiah describes God as that which will “satisfy your soul in drought … and you shall be like a watered garden.”

Unlike King or Father, the metaphor of water does not command or judge. It flows, irrigates, nourishes and sustains.

It may take some effort to dislodge the GOD IS A BIG POWERFUL MAN metaphor from our consciousness and make room for different ways of imagining and experiencing the divine. As we engage the other metaphors in Jewish spirituality (Place, Presence, Voice, Fire, Cloud, Oneness, Wholeness, Love, Emptiness, and Water), we open more widely the truths of our own experience and to the possibilities of what is next.**

*From “Who by Fire?” by Leonard Cohen

**We are grateful to Rabbi Toba Spitzer for her insights about water as a divine metaphor.

Elemental Meditation

Call forth a moment of earth: wood, stone, soil. Call forth a moment of earth: ocean, stream, rain.Call forth a moment of air: wind, song, breath. Call forth a moment of fire: candle, sun, lightning. Let these moments ground youAs you open your heart to pray.

Rabbi Jill Hammer

Twilight

As the sun sinks and the colors of the day turn, we offer a blessing for twilight, for twilight is neither day nor night, but in-between. We are all twilight people. We can never be fully labeled or defined. We are many identities and loves, many genders and none. We are at the intersection of histories, between place and place. We are criss-crossed paths of memory and destination, streaks of light swirled together. We are neither day nor night. We are both, neither, and all.May the sacred in-between of this evening suspend our certainties, soften our judgments, and widen our vision. May this in-between light illuminate our way to the God who transcends all categories and definitions. May we be lifted up into this twilight. We cannot always define; we can always say a blessing.

Am I awake? Am I prepared? Are you listening to my prayer? Can you hear my voice? Can you understand?Am I awake? Am I prepared?

One Voice

This is the sound of one voice, This is the sound of all of us. One spirit, one voice. Singing with love and the will to trust. The sound of one who makes a choice, Leave the rest behindthis is the sound of one voice. and it will turn to dust, this is the sound of all of us

This is the sound of voices two, The sound of me singing with you. This is the sound of one voice. Helping each other to make it through, One people, one voice.this is the sound of voices two. A song for every one of us. This is the sound of one voice,This is the sound of voices three, this is the sound of one voice. Singing together in harmony.Surrendering to the mystery, this is the sound of voices three.

Ahavah rabbah ahavtanu - With an abundant love You have loved us

Music by Rabbi Shir Yaakov-Feit

Listen into Love

It is all One: the valleys, the mountains, the shore, and the sea.It is all One.And so am I - this fragile reed, with a beating heart and a jumping mind;this thinking that is breathed and breathing, it’s all One.From One comes each and to One each returns. And in between is One as well. One in anger and One in song, One in play and One in pain, One in danger and One in redemption. It is all One and One is all there is. I sing the wonders of all that is One, and the simple truth that I know One is within me.

The Edge

All of us could be humblerWe could live inside each other for a whileGive up our certainty and earn the heart of understanding. We could say there is no other until we believed it.I am you and you are me We are all together. We could take a God’s eye view become smallLive within the skin of someone we do not understand. We could all be quieter rest within our heart - linesLet the truth rise before us.We could find our quiet Live in that quiet for a while. We could all be kinder reserve judgmentDelay certainty live with ambiguity. What if we acted as if something fine is approachingAnd we could be preparing waiting quiet. If we were quieter we might find our silenceWe could step back from the edge and do nothing –Until it became clear what to do what not to do.As long as it takes.

HASHKIVEINU / DEEP REST

We ask the sukkah to spread herself over us and rest upon us and protect us as a mother protects her children, so that we will feel safe on every side. When we welcome this sukkah of peace to our homes as a holy guest, the holy Divine presence comes down and spreads Her wings over us like a mother embracing her children. This sukkah of peace grants new souls to Her children, for all souls have their home in Her.

YOM KIPPUR AMIDAH(Traditional Amidah may be found on page 50)

You are your own High Priest. Now is the time for your own private confession and blessing in your own private Holy of Holies.

You buy some fabric. You put fringes on the corners and cover yourself with the cloth. Inside the cloth, you pray. Outside the cloth, you gossip. But all you did was cover yourself.

Breathe in, Yud. Breathe out, Hey.Breathe in, Vuv. Breathe out, Hey.*

You are now in your own Holy of Holies, alone with God, however or whatever you imagine God to be. Have your own holy conversation. Confess in this private spaceAll the things you know you did that you knew to be wrong,All the mistakes, the accidents, the omissions, the commissions….Take this time with yourself to know yourself.

Make your own blessing, first for yourself, then for your family, then for your community. If you are with your family, hug or hold hands, and if you wish, share your blessing.

On this holy day, we pray with all who pray with honesty and true regretAnd may Teshuvah (return), Tefilah (prayer), and Tzedakah (right action) Restore us to our place.

We rise. We bow down before the awesomeness Of the LoveAnd the Forgiveness.

Blessed is the Holy WholenessBreathing Existence.Breathe in, Yud.Breathe out, Hey.Breathe in, Vuv.Breathe out, Hey.*Amen.

Moses prayed, “Please, let me see Your face!” Life Unfolding responded, “I will cause all of my Goodliness to pass in front of your face. I will call out the name of Being - YHWH - before your face, that I am grace to whom I am grace, and I am compassion to whom I am compassion. But, Life Unfolding said, “You cannot see My face, for no living human can see my face.”

Second Aliyah: “The Presence”

Life Unfolding revealed: “Here is a place with Me. Stand on this rock, and it shall be when my Presence passes by, having placed you in the cleft of the rock, I will shield you with My hand upon you as I am passing by.”

So Moses carved two tablets of stone like the first ones. Moses rose up first thing in the morning and climbed up to Mount Sinai, as Life Unfolding had directed him. Moses took in his hand the two stone tablets. Life Unfolding came down in a cloud and stood with him there, calling out the name of Being - YHWH. Life Unfolding passed before his face calling out “Being and Becoming, God, compassion and tenderness, patience, forbearance, kindness, awareness, bearing love from age to age, lifting guilt and mistakes and making us free; yet not absolving unconditionally, but allowing the consequences of the sins of the parents fall upon the children and their children to the third and fourth generations.”

Moses immediately bowed on the ground, responding, “Please, if I have found tenderness in Your eyes, My Source, please Adonai, go with us, among us, for we can be wilfully stubborn. Please forgive our sins and our mistakes and let us be Your inheritance.”

When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst into loud and bitter sobs, and cried to his father, “Bless me too, Father!” But he answered, “Your brother came with guile and took away your blessing.” He (Esau) said, “Was he, then, named Yaakov that he might supplant me (vayakveini) these two times? First he took away my birthright and now he has taken away my blessing!” He added, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?” Isaac answered, saying to Esau, “But I have made him master over you. I have given him all his brothers for servants, and sustained him with grain and sine. What, then, can I still do for you, my son?” Esau said to his father, “Have you but one blessing, Father? Bless me too, Father!” And Esau wept aloud.

Yaakov was left alone. A man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he wrenched Yaakov’s hip at its socket. Then he said, “Let me go, for dawn is breaking.” But he answered, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Said the other, “What is your name?” He replied, “Yaakov.” He said, “Your name shall no longer be Yaakov, but Yisrael, for you have wrestled (ki sarita) with God (im-Elohim) and people, and you have been able.

He himself went on ahead and bowed low to the ground seven times until he was near his brother. Eisav ran to greet him. He embraced him and, falling on his neck, he kissed him, and they wept.

RETURNING THE TORAH

Your roots are deep in the earth, receiving nourishment from the darkness of the soil.Pull that nurturing up through your trunk, through your center, your core.Pull energy up and out of your branches...feel the warmth of the sun feeding your leaves.Send it down your branches, causing seeds to become fruit….Feel your roots in the earth, your branches in the sky.You are now the unification of the earthly and divine.Say: Eitz chayim ani: I am a tree of life. My ways are ways of pleasantness and all my paths are paths of peace.

D’vora K’lilah bat Shachar

Eitz Chayim He / Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:17-18; Lamentations 5:21)

She is a tree of life, more precious than gold.Hold her in your heart and you will understand. Her roots are deep and wide, her branches filled with light. And all of her pathways are peace.Help us to return to You. Then truly shall we return. Renew our days to a new beginning.

Unetaneh Tokef / The Heart of it All

I.

We have returned to this sacred day in all of its power, where each of us asks:“What is my fate in the book of life?”

Yet we do not stand here alone, reflecting upon our fate only. We stand together concerned about the fate of all of us.

The Great Shofar blasts.

We hear the alarm.

Where is there justice?

The terrible dread hangs in the air as we ask:

How long will this pandemic endure?

How many will suffer; how many will die?

How do we endure isolation and separation from friends and loved ones?

When will there be a vaccine?

What will we encounter this year?

Racial injustice in our country and in our community?

Refugee children detained separated from their families?

The growth of income inequity?

Famine worsening, our climate degrading?

How much ache, fear and heartbreak are written in the book for this year?

We are like sheep passing before the Shepherd

Are You counting? Are You measuring the lifebreath in our lungs?

What is the fate of the world in this book of life?

Who will be killed unarmed in the streets and who will live safely in their homes?

Let our values and our faith, let our love and our desire for justice be pathways to divert what is written, to change what is written and accept what is written with grace. Let Repair, Prayer and Giving Our Fair Share hold our broken hearts together as we join together to work for a better year.

ובשופר גדול יתקע, וקול דממה דקה ישמע:

U-v’shofar gadol yitaka, v’kol d’mamah daka yishamah. A great Shofar shall sound, A still small voice shall be heard

We bear witness to the truth of our lives. We stand in humility. We wrestle with the significance of being alive. We reach towards the source of loving-kindness. On Rosh Hashanah, the Book of Life is opened, in which our lives are inscribed. On Yom Kippur, the Book is sealed. We stand in the power of the unfolding present, and we are renewed.

U-t’shuvah u-t’filah u-tz’dakah ma’avirin et ro’a hag’zerah... T’shuvah: we turn inwards to face what is true. T’filah: we speak and sing our yearning, and embrace being alive. Tz’dakah: we embody kindness and justice, toward ourselves and one another. Ma’avirin et ro’a hag’zerah: when we open our hearts fully with courage, we release our illusions. And we are transformed.

We come from dust and we return to dust. We work to earn our bread.Like shards of broken glass, parched grasses, fading blooms.Shadows and clouds that pass and disappear.Like a breeze that moves, a wind that kicks up and scatters, remnants of a dream we barely remember. We grasp the enormity of time and our moment within it.We imbue the power of this day, for it is sacred.

Al Cheit: Healing Our Relationship With Ourselves

For accustoming ourselves to despairAnd for being judgmental For confusing love and lust And not taking care of our bodies For remembering prices but forgetting values And for failing to maintain healthy limits For trivializing the sacred And for armoring our hearts For our arrogance and vanity And for being unforgiving For letting our hearts, minds and bodies disconnect And for surrendering to mistrust

For each of these hurts, we seek this day return. Opening to the possibility of forgiveness, coming back now to our core.

Adapted from Rabbi Burt Jacobson

I.

Our Source, may we make this year a fresh beginning. Our Strength, may we grow from life’s challenges. Our Source, may we accept what we cannot change. Our Strength, may we change what we can.Our Source, may we soften into acceptance. Our Strength, may we brighten into joy.Our Source, may we gratefully receive what we are given. Our Strength, may we learn how to embrace our enemies. Chorus

II.

Our Source, may we open our eyes. Our Strength, may we challenge our minds. Our Source, may we soften our hearts. Our Strength, may we return to You, fully and completely. Our Source, may we write our names in Your Book of Life. Our Strength, may we make room for what is next. Our Source, may all of our dreams be fulfilled. Our Strength, may we never turn away. Aleinu - It is Up to Us

I.

It is upon us to repair the broken places.

It is upon us to face the truth no matter how difficult. It is upon us to see that justice is complex and not always easy.It is upon us to know when we have choices, and to make them.

It is upon us to understand that our prayers are holy conversations. It is upon us to be mindful and to take our spirituality seriously. It is upon us to hold more than one idea of God in our heads at any given time.

It is upon us to enjoy our bodies without shame. It is upon us to listen when others say no, and when they say yes.It is upon us to have fun and to spread it around.

Trisha Arlin

II.

My heart is moved by all I cannot save: so much has been destroyed.I have to cast my lot with those who age after age, perversely, with no extraordinary power, reconstitute the world.

Adrienne Rich

CONCLUDING SONGS

Return

I will take a long look at me And think about what it is I see Have I been good to you? Did I do all that I said I’d do?

Remembering the words I’ve used Thinking about the times I was rude If I am thankful for this gift Let me say it with deeds, not just lips

It’s going to be a brave new year Starting right now, right here And I will be strong and stand up tall Reach out for others when they fall And I will rejoice in my faith And remember that love is why we’re made Be the very best that I can be For the world and for me

Every day, we live our lives Some days we let ourselves slide And we forget our way Thankfully it’s not too late Avinu Malkeinu, Choneinu V’aneinu I may have done wrong at times I know But through my actions I will show.

Teshuva….Teshuva….Return….Return

While You Still Can

Make amends with that old friendYou swore you’d never never talk to againBecause you miss himCall up your mom on the telephoneTalk a whole lot of nothing ‘til the cows come homeAnd listenCross every T, dot most the I’s‘Cause years grow wings and fly on byAnd time slips through your fingers just like sand

Because everything you thought would last foreverNever lasts forever, like you planDon’t let your night become anotherSo take life by the hands while you still can

Get your daddy to tell that same old jokeAnd laugh between the Jack and cokeAnd hope one day you’ll be half as funnyCount your blessings and your starsIt’s in the air and who you areIt’s about the wealth you giveIt sure as hell ain’t about the money.

Company of Friends

When I die, let them judge me by my company of friendsLet them know me as the footprints that I left upon the sandLet them laugh for all the laughterLet them cry for laughter’s endBut when I die, let them judge me by my company of friends. But when I die, let them judge me by my company of friends.

When I die, let them toast to all the things that I believeLet them raise a glass to consciousnessAnd not spill a drop for griefLet the bubbles rise at midnightLet their tongues get light as thievesAnd when I die, let them toast to all the things that I believe.I believe in restless hunger, I believe in red balloons, I believe in private thunder, In the end I do believeI believe in inspiration, I believe in lightning bugs, I believe in slow creation, In the end I do believeI believe in ink on paper, I believe in lips on ears, I believe what’s shared is savored, In the end I do believeI believe in work on Sundays, I believe in raising barns, I believe in wasting Mondays, In the end I do believeI believe in intuition, I believe in being wrong, I believe in contradiction, In the end I do believeI believe in living smitten, I believe all hearts will mend, I believe our book is writtenBy our company of friends.

Open my lips, Beloved One, and let my mouth declare Your praise.

Blessed are You, Eternal our God, God of our ancestors, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, God of Sarah, God of Rebecca, God of Rachel and God of Leah, great, heroic, awesome God, supreme divinity, imparting deeds of loving- kindness, begetter of all, mindful of the devotion of our ancestors, bringing, with love, redemption to their children’s children for the sake of the Sacred Name. Remember us for life, our sovereign, who wishes us to live, and write us in the Book of Life, for Your sake, ever-living God. Sovereign, our help, salvation, and protector: Blessed are You, Eternal, the shield of Abraham and the help of Sarah.

You are forever powerful, Almighty One, You bring the dead to life, abundant in Your saving acts. With loving-kindness You sustain the living, bringing the dead to life with great compassion, upholding those who fall, healing the sick, freeing the captive, and remaining steadfast to those who sleep in the dust. Who can compare to You, almighty God, who can resemble You, the source of life and death, who causes salvation to grow?

Who can compare to You, source of all compassion, remembering all creatures, decreeing life! You are faithful in giving life to the dead. Blessed are You, Source of Life, who brings the dead to life.

Holy are You. Your Name is holy. And all holy beings hail You each day.

And therefore, Holy One our God, let awe of You infuse the whole of creation, and let awareness of You dwell in all Your creatures. Let every being worship You. Let all of them, as one, enact Your bidding with a whole and peaceful heart. For we have always known, Holy One, that all authority to rule belongs to You, all strength is rooted in You. Your Name alone is the source of awe that surges through all life.

And therefore, Holy One, let awe of You infuse us, let the praise of You ring out from all who worship You. Let hope enliven all who seek You, and let all who look to You with hope find strength to speak. Grant joy throughout your land, let happiness resound throughout Your holy city, soon, and in our days.

And therefore, let the just rejoice and celebrate, let all who follow in Your path sing out, let all who love You dance with joy, and may Your power overwhelm all treachery, so that it vanish wholly from the earth like smoke. Then shall the power of injustice pass away from the earth.

Holy are You, and awe-inspiring is Your Name. There is no God apart from You, as it is written: “The Creator of the hosts of heaven shall be exalted through the rule of law, and God, the Holy One, will be made sacred by the reign of justice.” Blessed are You, Eternal One, the holy sovereign power.

You have loved us, and have taken pleasure in us, and have sanctified us with Your mitzvot, and You have brought us, Sovereign One, near to Your service, and have called us to the shelter of Your great and sacred Name. And You have given us, Eternal, our God [On Rosh HaShanah: this day of Shabbat and this day of Remembering, a day to hear the Shofar], [On Yom Kippur: this day of Atonement for pardon, for forgiveness and for atonement, a day for pardoning all of our wrongful acts, a sacred gathering, a remembering of the going-out from Egypt.

Our God, our ancients’ God, may our prayer arise and come to You, and be held and be acceptable. Let it be heard, acted upon, remembered - remembering us and all our needs, remembering our ancestors, remembering messianic hopes, remembering all who are in awe of Your Name. Act for goodness and grace, love and care, life, well-being and peace on this Day of Shabbat and Remembering / Day of Atonement.

Remember us this day, Eternal, our God, for goodness. Favor us this day with blessing. Preserve us this day for life. With Your redeeming, nurturing word, be kind and generous. Act tenderly on our behalf, and grant us success over all our trials. Truly, our eyes turn toward You, for You are a providing God, gracious and compassionate are You.

[On Rosh HaShanah] Our God, our ancients’ God, (take pleasure in our rest), rule over all the world in its entirety, by showing forth Your glory, and be raised up over all the earth in Your beloved presence. And let the wondrous aura of Your reign be manifest in all who dwell upon the earth: let every creature know that You are its creator, let every living thing be aware that You have fashioned it, let everyone who draws the breath of life declare that You, Eternal, reign supreme, and that Your sovereignty embraces all.

Our God, our ancients’ God, enable us to realize holiness through Your mitzvot, give us our portion in Your Torah, let us enjoy the good things of Your world, and gladden us with Your salvation. (And help us to perpetuate, ETERNAL ONE, our God, with love and with passion, your holy Shabbat, and may all Israel find rest and peace this day.) Refine our hearts to serve You truthfully, for You are a God of truth, and Your word is truth and endures forever. Blessed are You, Eternal, the sovereign power over all the earth, who raises up (Shabbat), the people Israel and this day of remembering to holiness.

[On Yom Kippur] Our God, our ancients’ God, do not forsake us, turn us away, cause us shame, nor nullify Your covenant with us, but bring us nearer to Your Torah, teach us Your mitzvot, instruct us in Your ways. Incline our hearts to treat Your name with awe, open us to Your love, and bring us back to You in truth, with whole hearts. And for the sake of Your great Name, be compassionate. Forgive us our wrongs this day (of Shabbat and) of Atonement. As it is said: “I have made your sins vanish like a cloud and, like a mist, the things you have done wrong. Return to Me; it is I who have redeemed You!” And it is said: “For on this day, atonement shall be made for you, to make you free from all of your sins. Before the Eternal, you shall be pure.”

Our God, our ancients’ God, enable us to realize holiness with Your mitzvot, give us our portion in Your Torah, let us enjoy the good things of Your world, and gladden us with Your salvation (and help us to perpetuate, Eternal our God, Your holy Shabbat, with love and joy, and let all Israel, and all who treat Your name as holy, rest upon this day). Refine our hearts to serve You truthfully. For You are a forgiving God in each and every generation. Apart from You we have no sovereign, none full of compassion and forgiveness, except You. Blessed are You, Forgiving One, sovereign of compassion and forgiveness for our wrong-doings, You who make our guilt pass away, year after year, the sovereign power over all the earth, who raises up (Shabbat), the Day of Atonement and the people Israel to holiness.

[Both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur]

Take pleasure, Eternal, our God, in Israel. Lovingly accept their prayer. May Israel’s worship always be acceptable to You. And may our eyes behold Your homecoming with compassionate intent, to Zion. Blessed are You, Faithful One, who brings Your presence home to Zion.

We give thanks to You that You are The All-Compassionate, our God, God of our ancestors, today and always. A firm, enduring source of life, to shield to us in time of trial, You are ever there, from age to age. We acknowledge You, declare Your praise, and thank You for our lives entrusted to Your hand, our souls placed in Your care, for Your miracles that greet us every day, and for Your wonders and the good things that are with us every hour, morning, noon and night. Good One, whose kindness never stops, Compassionate One, whose loving acts have never failed - always have we placed our hope in You.

For all these things, Your Name be blessed and raised in honor always, sovereign of ours, forever. And write down for a good life all who share Your covenant. Let all of life acknowledge You! May all beings praise Your name in truth, O God, our rescue and our aid. Blessed are You, Compassionate One, whose Name is good, to whom all thanks are due.

[Evenings] Grant abundant peace eternally for the world. For You are the sovereign source of all peace. So may it be a good thing in Your eyes to bless Your people Israel, and all who dwell on earth, in every time and hour with Your peace.

[Mornings] Grant peace, goodness and blessing in the world, grace, love and compassion over us and over all who are in awe of Your Name. Bless us, Source of Being, all of us, as one amid Your light, for by Your light, Eternal, our God, You give to us Torah of life, and love of kindness, justice, blessing, compassion, life and peace. So may it be a good thing in Your eyes, to bless Israel and all peoples, with abundant strength and peace.

[Evenings and Mornings] In the book of life, blessing, and peace, and proper sustenance, may we be remembered and inscribed, we and all who are in awe of Your Name, for a good life and for peace. Blessed are You, Compassionate One, maker of peace.

YIZKOR / MEMORIAL SERVICE

A Grief Meditation

Let’s begin, simply by remembering why you are here. Bring your attention to your breath… Allow your breath to sweep your mind, noticing whether it is a deep breath or shallow.

Recall for a moment now a loss or losses that have touched you.

Receive these simple phrases that touch into the truth of grief:

May I be open to the sorrow and pain of grief.

May I find the inner resources to be present for my sorrow.

May I accept my sadness knowing that I am not my sadness.

If you’ve cared for someone, and it wasn’t always smooth or easy, reflect on this phrase:

I forgive myself for not always meeting my loved one’s needs.

May I forgive myself if because of COVID I was unable to care for a beloved person or to be there physically at the end of their lives or at their funeral.

May I forgive myself for mistakes made and things left unsaid or undone.

May I be open to the kindness of others as they support me in this journey of grief.

May I learn from and transform sorrow.

יהא שמא רבא מברך לעלם ולעלמי עלמיה:

Y’hei shmei rabah m’vorach l’alam ul-almei almaya.

May the Great Name be blessed forever as long as worlds endure!

We Remember Them

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.In the blowing of the wind and the chill of winter, we remember them.In the opening of the buds and the rebirth of spring, we remember them. In the blueness of the sky and the warmth of summer, we remember them. In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.

So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have a joy we crave to share, we remember them. When we have decisions that are difficult to make, we remember them. When we have achievements that are based on theirs, we remember them.

So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.

Poet’s note: I made no attempt to translate the traditional prayer. What I have tried to do is to write what the act of saying Kaddish means to me. That is, what it feels like individually, what it means as an act of remembering and mourning, how it serves as a communal acknowledgment of death, and how it anchors the reader in life.

I have attempted to follow the rhythm of the prayer which I believe to be as essential as the words. Long before I learned the words, or their meaning, the rhythm and intonation of the prayer were powerfully etched into my mind. To this end, I included a transliteration of the prayer for comparison’s sake. I also took a little poetic license at the very end.

One Voice / Hope in Community

This is the sound of one voice, This is the sound of all of us. One spirit, one voice. Singing with love and the will to trust. The sound of one who makes a choice, Leave the rest behindthis is the sound of one voice. and it will turn to dust, this is the sound of all of us This is the sound of voices two, The sound of me singing with you. This is the sound of one voice. Helping each other to make it through, One people, one voice.this is the sound of voices two. A song for every one of us. This is the sound of one voice, This is the sound of voices three, this is the sound of one voice. Singing together in harmony.Surrendering to the mystery, this is the sound of voices three.

Amidah / Hope and Courage

I affirm this simple truth:Emptiness is the source of all.Creation is the infinitethat manifests as the finite. There is only the One, empty of form, who fills all form.Knowing this, I can let go of the compulsion to rule, the desire to control others.Rooted in this, I learn to judge welland uproot oppression within and without.Nothing is by chance, because even chance keeps its own order. The sages tell of hardened hearts and bitter plagues -the cost of freedom.I want to remember that costand not make light of struggle, in myself and in others.I mourn even my enemies’ loss, and take no comfort in anyone’s undoing. Compassion is the way, even as is justice.

May I live each day with spaciousness of mind, attending to lifeand all that she places before me.

Page 67: HOPE€¦ · HOPE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES ROSH HASHANAH September 18 - 19 YOM KIPPUR5781 September 27 - 28 2020

67

So that I can live without hesitation, and so I can lie down in peace, having given life my all.Only then I can rise upin anticipation of a new day, knowing I have so much more to give.

Let compassion guide my actions, and justice shield me from struggles.Let my life be a channel for grace and mercy, bringing peace and comfort to those in need.May the source of life spread a blanket of peace over me,over Israel, over all peoples, and over the whole world.

At Judaism Your Way, we’re an open tent, embracing everyone who seeks a connection to Jewish life. Every day, we share transformative Jewish experiences and recognize ourselves as part of something relevant, whole, and sacred. There are many ways to be Jewish. At Judaism Your Way, we respect and include them all.

The core philosophy that guides our work is one we call the Torah of Inclusion. Our Torah of Inclusion offers flexible and diverse pathways to connect Jewishly by using welcoming language like “Jews and loved ones”; offering accessible services outdoors, in-person, and online; and officiating life events for intermarried families without preconditions or treating the person of another faith differently. This often serves as a welcome change for many of our participants, especially those who may have previously experienced estrangement from Jewish life.

Our philosophy and delivery model create a maximally inclusive environment for participants who identify as cultural/secular, unaffiliated, part of an interfaith partnership or family, LGBTQ+, those whose spirituality and identity includes Judaism and another tradition or none at all, and those looking for an unambiguous welcome to Jewish life in the Denver/Boulder metro-area, Colorado, and now, virtually, across the country. We welcome all people as they are, without ulterior motives to change them from unaffiliated to affiliated, interfaith to converted, or secular to more religious.
