HOPE in a time of AIDS

"Hope" has become quite a popular word in recent years in our country. People are in need of hope. The onslaught of the AIDS pandemic is certainly a major reason for this. Many who have heard the news that they are HIV positive say that it was like a death sentence to them - in that one moment life lost meaning, because they lost hope.

When the Apostle Peter wrote to the Christians of his time he knew that life was not easy for them.To them Peter wrote about the living hope that they shared through their faith in Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3).The Christian AIDS Bureau is in a privileged position to have this message in our time of AIDS.

To be bearers of hope in a time of AIDS challenges us to rediscover the meaning of the "living hope" that gave Peter the boldness to encourage his fellow Christians in their time of "grief in all kinds of trials". We will have to remember the empty grave of Jesus. We will have to look to the future, seeing the possibilities of people infected with HIV living with courage, meaningful lives as contributing, valuable members of society - unashamed and without fear of rejection.

Hope is working towards new possibilities. Hope is conquering negative ideas, attitudes, stigma and fear. Hope is reaching out in love to the stigmatized, the lonely, the left behind and the grieving. Hope is learning to live positively. Hope is sharing the good news of the life in Jesus Christ. Hope is praying with the infected and affected in the words of the apostle Paul: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Rom 15:13).

Research

A rapid assessment study was performed by CABSA during June 2003 to assess the impact of the 2002 workshops.

Investigating a National Christian Conference on HIV and AIDS

Above: Frank Molteno (CPSA), Anthony Ambrose (SABC), Christo Greyling (World Vision and SACLA), Daleen Raubenheimer (World Vision), Michael Stone (Facilitator) Front: Logy Murray (CABSA) Tshidi Mahlonoko (Rhema), Dawie Theron (DRC), Malatsi Mofokeng (URCSA).

CABSA initiated a process to investigate the need for a National Christian Conference on HIV and AIDS, as more and more churches and FBO's suggested this idea. In February 2004 a group of national role-players, representing churches and FBO's discussed this and decided to do a needs analysis through a questionnaire. If the response is positive, key-persons will be invited to a workshop to plan the way forward.

The Uniting Reformed Church declared their involvement in HIV/AIDS at their General Synod in 2001 with a Statement on HIV/AIDS. In 2003 a strategy for the implementation of the Statement was drafted. An Agreement for the implementation of the strategy was reached with CABSA in October 2003.

Maxine Oppelt has been appointed as Project Assistant for the URCSA at CABSA. After CABSA visited role-players in the regional Synods a Workgroup was established to monitor and evaluate CABSA inputs. This Workgroup was launched April 2004. The URCSA is very enthusiastic about the new challenges to continue their involvement in the field of HIV and AIDS.

Members of the URCSA HIV/AIDS workgroup: Tseliso Khateane, Mxolisi Mamkeli, Thandeka Biyela, Terrance Wessels, Patience Bojosi, Lou Haveman, Logy Murray, Veronica Khosa, Nelis du Toit.

CABSA betrek nuwe kantore!

CABSA Management Board members - 2004/2005:

A word by Prof Attie van Wijk, Rector Huguenot College (Afrikaans: page 1):

A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, according to the Chinese adage. This annual report speaks of the first step! What a blessed year it was! The dedicated staff of CABSA did exceptionally well this year and established partnerships that marked the Bureau as a permanent role player in the field.

The Huguenot College expresses hereby its gratitude towards church councils, individuals and organizations for their suppor.t. We appreciate your ongoing support. The ideal for the Bureau is to stabilize financially in order for the staff to focus all their time and energy on the task at hand, as well as the mission and the vision of the Bureau, and not have to worry about the payment of their salaries.

We are looking forward to the next step that will be taken on our journey in service of our Lord, Jesus Christ, to continue with the message of reconciliation and hope for those infected and affected with HIV/AIDS.
