Principal’s Report “College Cash

Eager students witnessed the opening of the new College Cash shop earlier this week by Mr Baulch. It is an exciting time for the students and is the next step in promoting and recognis-ing students displaying the school community values. Some of the items in the ‘shop’ were snapped up immediately while other items will take a while for the students to save their school dollars before they can afford to purchase the items. Thanks go to the staff who have so generously donated items as well as various services and treats for sale in the College Cash Shop.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all of our students who competed in the Little Desert Cross Country earlier this week. There were many outstanding runs, good sporting behaviour and positive support by our participants. Some students will be going on to the next level which will be held in Warrnambool on 5

th June.

Education Week

Education Week is celebrated in May each year. It is a time to celebrate learning and acknowledge the many good things that take place in schools. This year the focus is on Healthy Mind, Healthy Body. A range of activities have been organised for lunchtimes next week with a special session scheduled for Friday morning.

Our Website

The College website has been inactive for quite some time. However, I am pleased to inform you that it has been relaunched as a blog and is now in the process of being updated. The website will be used for general information such as policies and information booklets. It will have some aspects of curriculum uploaded to it and it will have the weekly newsletter upload-ed regularly. The College website can be accessed through the following address; https://hopetounp12.wordpress.com/ Day-to-day news will continue to be featured through our Facebook page which has been highly successful.

Mother’s Day Stall

Thanks go to the Parents and Friends for providing the Mother’s Day stall last Friday. I am

sure that mums across the Hopetoun school network enjoyed the presents and I hope every-

one had a restful and pleasant day.

SWPBS Have you heard students talking about “SWPBS Cards” and “College Cash” recently but find yourself wondering what they are? Since Term 2 last year, Hopetoun P-12 College has been implementing a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program. Through this program, students are taught and encouraged to regularly display our values of Respect, Responsibility and Teamwork. The program requires staff to be on the lookout for our stu-dents displaying exemplary behaviour and acknowledging that positive behaviour by signing their SWPBS cards. When students are able to fill their cards with teacher signatures, they earn a dollar of “College Cash” which until now, could only be spent at the school Caf. This is why we have developed an SWPBS Shop to allow for a greater variety of items that students can spend their money on. The shop is already generating interest among students and is creating motivation for them to concentrate on their behaviour at school. The program is also a great reminder for staff to acknowledge our students when we see them displaying our values. The Shop will also teach students about saving and use of money to purchase items.

We are aware that parents/guardians may not want their children to purchase certain items at the shop and we encourage you to talk to your children about choice and suitable items. Please have a look at the shop catalogue to view some of the items that are currently on sale. If you have any further questions please contact the school.

Please see the attached catalogue to view the items that are for sale.

What is happening in the Classroom……………………….

This week the F-2 Class have been learning about 3D shapes. On Wednesday they made mod-

els of cubes, pyramids and rectangular prisms using playdough and tooth picks.

Healthy Active Kids

When working with monkeys....

Seven of Hopetoun’s youngsters attended Healthy Active Kids this week. The children prac-ticed their dinosaur impersonations before going on an outdoor adventure. The adventure started with some

elephants balancing on a piece of string .

Once the string broke and our elephants fell into the sandpit it was off to see the calves. The chil-dren loved seeing the calves and even though our noise levels exceeded the comfort zone of the calves, they were intrigued by our presence. We then headed back to the stadium to run, twirl, slide and bounce our way through a circuit. We finished with a fruit snack and a story all about dads snoring. The children were very quick to tell of their own snoring dads.

Shake Rattle and Read takes place in the library

on Monday 22nd

of May and Active Kids returns to

the stadium on Monday 29th May.

WEDNESDAY SPORT (Netball SEPEP) – From Bronte, Bryndal, Kate & Sharky Round 4 Results (May 17

th)

The Gilberts were moving the ball down the court nicely, but Kate was scoring well in the goal circle for the Sharks. Michayla and Kate were making space for each other. In the first half Flynn was scoring well for the Gilberts. There has been great movement of the ball for both teams. It was a good close game between the sides but the Gilberts won in the end. Scores: Gilberts (11) def Sharks (7). - Bronte Jonty scored the first goal for the Giants, but Sharks were putting up a good defence. Jonty was finding the ball easily but the Sharks fought back into the game. It turned out to be a close game and it ended up as a draw. Scores: Sharks (9) drew Giants (9). - Bryndal Jonty got the first goal of the game for the Giants and Flynn got the first goal for the Gil-berts. The game went quickly and it was 12-4 at half time. Little Desert Cross-Country @ Kaniva 15 of our students represented the school last Tuesday May 16

th at the Little Desert Cross-

Country in Kaniva. The weather was quite cool, with the hilly terrain making the run a little extra challenging. Everyone completed their run and our better results for the day were:

Denita Reid – Under 15 Girls (3rd

) Kiana Marshman – Under 16 Girls (1

st)

Shiarne Petschel – Under 16 Girls (3rd

) A number of our students have qualified to progress onto Greater Western Region (GWR) cross-country in Warrnambool on Monday June 5

Year 9 and F—2 Chatterbooks

The Year F-2 and 9’s read a variety of big books this week in Chatterbooks and then began sharing their ideas so that they could create their own big books. Some of the ideas in the works are:

Cody said that he, Tegan and Flynn are making a book about two penguins that live in a house and a seal is trying to eat them.

A book about bears becoming friends with fish is what Riley and Montana are going to create.

Emily, Zac, Katherine and Jess are going to write about a monster who is going to look all around to find a zoo to live in.

What Is News This Week? News: Newly received or noteworthy infor-

mation, especially about recent events.

That’s what the dictionary meaning is.

However, within news there are local,

state, national and international categories

which are usually formally presented in

papers or online sites. There is also com-

munity news - this is the type of news that

you hear before seeing it for yourself!

When we were looking at newspapers in

English, I learnt that in the Letters to the

Editor section, you can tell what side a

person is on from the way that they struc-

ture their sentences.

I also noticed how a wide variety of news

is offered in The Herald Sun. There is

something to interest everyone, from the

Royal announcements, to the Collingwood

Suncorp Super Netball article about the

teams’ performance and how they are

progressing this season.

Newspapers may seem old fashioned or

out-dated with the Internet, but they can

offer you just as much. The feel of actually

turning pages rather than swiping a screen

while drinking your morning coffee is

something that many people cherish.

Maycomb and the Finch Family

Throughout reading ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ I have learnt that Maycomb is a town where most people believe any and every rumour that gets tossed around, but sur-prisingly Atticus Finch is one of the few in the town that believes in the saying, “innocent until proven guilty,” which plays a big part in the story. In a way, you could almost see Atticus, as the wise one that always sees the good in everyone, even when others cannot see it for themselves. This is the reason why there is tension between the Finch family. Atticus’s family does not feel the same way about people which makes it very confusing for Atticus’s 8 year old daughter,Scout, and his 13 year old son, Jem, who are still trying to figure out why the people of the town dislike Negroes so much and why the town dis-

likes their father so much for trying to help a

Negro. Should someone be treated so badly for trying to help someone that isn’t the same colour as them? When will help-ing someone with a different skin colour be justified as an act of kindness and not an

act of betrayal? Latanya

Year 9 Responses to reading The Giver

After reading The Giver

The ending to ‘The Giver’ was a bit abrupt. The author could have gone into more detail about Jonas’ struggle to survive and then how he felt about finding “Elsewhere.” It could have also had an extra chapter (an epilogue) that told you what happened after they were found or several years later. The extra chapter would have answered some of the many questions that we all still have about the book because the ending leaves you confused and wondering. Jess Chamberlain

Questions I have after reading The Giver

In a way, Jonas liked having some of the feelings. He liked feeling warmth

and happiness. When Jonas heard the music, what were his thoughts and

feelings? Makayla Watts

Year 8 Descriptive Writing About Food

I enjoy spaghetti carbonara when it is steaming hot, creamy and slippery. I

like spaghetti carbonara because it is tasteful and sweet when the bacon is

crunchy. I like to eat it quickly so I can get seconds. Harry

My favourite food is butter chicken and naan bread. I love how the butter

chicken is spicy and a creamy texture. I always have garlic naan bread so I

can swirl it in the butter chicken to eat. When it comes to eating Indian, I al-

ways sneakily double up by tearing the naan bread. I love how it warms all

your body up on a cold day. Oliver

My favourite food is shepherd’s pie. It is comforting for me and when it goes

through your body, you can feel the warmth. Shepherd’s pie is cheesy and

sometimes it can be chewy. It is very tasty but you have to eat it slowly so

that you get all of the flavours that it has. When the cheese is hard on the

top, it is very crunchy. Sharky

Education Week 21-27 May 2017

‘Healthy Mind, Healthy Body’

Education Week is an opportunity for all schools to showcase the

work they are doing for students to help ensure healthy minds and

bodies.

The week aims to profile and celebrate everything from sport,

dance, mentoring, yoga, meditation, reading, art, breakfast clubs,

stress management and resilience and more.

To celebrate Education Week and to encourage healthy minds and

bodies in our students we have a week of activities arranged.

During lunchtimes, there will be different competitions running, from

bat tennis, soccer, 4 square or dungeon and dragons. There will be

something for everyone to be active.

On Friday, Dana Kotkamp will be taking the Year 7-10’s through their

paces hosting a boot camp at 9.00am in the stadium. Dana is a quali-

fied personal trainer and comes with a wealth of knowledge on the

importance of healthy minds.

Year 11-12 will be visited by RNWH social worker, where the im-

portance of having strategies to destress while remaining focused on

your studies will be discussed. This comes at a valuable time for our

VCE students with the year travelling so fast and exams getting

closer.

We all know the importance of eating breakfast daily therefore

Breakfast club will run daily as usual, although Friday breakfast will

be a special treat for all. The Primary students will have Faye Cook,

Miss Penman, Miss Huff and Suzi preparing something special for

them to start their day. While the senior students should be starv-

ing after their mind or body workout so they will be treated to a

cooked

breakfast before recess.
