Principal’s Report

Cross Country

The weather held for us on Tuesday for our annual school cross country. Prep to Year 12 joined in the event running and walking varying distances. Some took the event seriously and ran with effort and de-termination. Others used the cross country as a time for exercise in their walk around the lake. Partici-pation, whether running or walking, was one of the key elements of the day. Everyone who participated earned points for their house.

The cross-country concluded with a healthy lunch at the lake. The lunch was organised by the VCAL stu-dents and served by the Parents Club. Thanks go to the volunteers for helping out on the day. Congrat-ulations go to the age-champions as well as to the winning house – Banksia.

National Testing

National testing of English and Maths for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 is rapidly approaching. NAPLAN, as the Na-tional Testing is better known, takes place on Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th May. This testing is extremely important for the individual students, for parents as well as for the school. The tests provide us with important feedback on student progress and especially on areas of the curriculum they have not fully learned yet. The results enable teachers to revise teaching and learning as well as plan more effectively for the future. The results provide parents with a snapshot of current achieve-ment levels of their child and enables an informed discussion around progress and aspirations. School-wide data gathered through the NAPLAN results assist us in planning, in evaluating the quality of our curriculum as well as provides us with an opportunity to reflect on teaching and learning strategies.

Some schools will be doing NAPLAN online, however, we will be doing the paper and pencil version of NAPLAN this year. Please continue to speak positively to your child about the importance of NAPLAN and encourage them to put in their very best effort.

Parents Club

The Parents Club held two meetings last night – one for the Presentation Ball and the second was a gen-eral meeting. It is pleasing to note that planning is well underway for the 2020 Presentation Ball which is to be held on 14th March 2020. The Parents Club continues to be actively raising funds as well as sup-porting student events and funding refurbishments. Over the past months the Parents Club has support-ed and funded the establishment of the new garden, supported working bees as well as provided, in cooperation with the VCAL students, lunch after the cross country run. They have the Mothers Day Stall coming up and they are funding the purchase of blinds for classrooms as well as umbrellas for the front of the school.

Thanks go to the parents who support the school through their involvement in the Parents Club and to those who are unable to attend meetings but help out wherever possible.

Outstanding Students

It was a pleasure to acknowledge two of our senior students, Kiana and Jessica, at assembly earlier this week. Both received Yarriambiack Shire Awards late last term. Kiana received the Young Achiever Award and Jessica received the Outstanding Community Service Award for her work in raising funds for Beyond Blue. Well done girls.

Dental Services – Royal Flying Doctor Service

The RFDS visited us today to show their flight simulator and to speak to the students about oral health. It was a little strange to look in the playground and see an ‘aeroplane’ parked near the cubby house! The primary students enjoyed the opportunity to climb into the simulator and see the equipment and experience part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service’s medical rescue operations.

Primary Prattle……...What’s happening in the

Year 4-6 room?

The Primary students are having a very busy start to the term with preparations for NAPLAN which are scheduled for week 4, cross country and cluster group cross country.

Tuesday all primary students competed in the school cross country, where they showed their athletic abilities. All students from Prep to Year 6 completed the course with such enthusiasm and some even were able to smile as they crossed the line.

Students are also looking forward to competing in the cluster cross country. The Year 5 and 6 students will also be showing their skills in football and netball. Don’t forget to bring your re-cess, lunch and water bottle.

Students have also been involved with the Royal Flying Doctors Service today, with all students enjoying some time in the cockpit “flying” the plane. The session was very informative with the students learning about the history of the RFDS and the importance of good dental hygiene.

Parents please remember it is important for students to com-plete weekly homework and also to read and record their read-ing in their reading diary please.
