About Sweden

Safe and prosperous with fantastic scenery – living in Sweden is easy. And it's easy to feel at home. Swedes arerenowned the world over for being innovative and creative, but also efficient, knowledgeable and punctual.Trains run on time, broadband connections are reliable and almost everyone speaks English – small but essentialdetails that help to make your meeting truly successful.

An elongated country on the Scandinavian peninsula

Sweden has 9.5 million inhabitants and is Europe's fifth largest country by area. It has a parliamentary system andis one of the world's 43 independent monarchies. Sweden ranks fourth in the world in The Economist’sDemocracy Index and holds seventh place in the UN's Human Development Index. Sweden has been a memberof the EU since 1995.

Creative and curious

Swedes have distinctly made their mark on everything from music, fashion and design to film, art and literature.Part of the explanation for this is undoubtedly that Swedes are well educated and travel a lot – and are keen totake inspiration from innovations from near and far. Influences that subsequently lead to new ideas.

Innovative and creative

Sweden boasts a strong culture of innovation. Innovative companies such as Skype and Spotify have achievedhuge international success, while traditional IT companies like Ericsson and engineering companies such asSandvik and Alfa Laval also have capacity to continuously develop and innovate. The fact that Sweden is aninnovative country is also apparent from the number of submitted patents. Statistics from organisations such asWIPO show that Sweden is among the ten countries submitting the most patents each year.

Superb nature experiences

From southern Sweden's wide sandy beaches to the moorland heaths, mountains and glaciers in the north –Sweden offers extraordinary nature experiences. It's easy to get out and enjoy untouched forests and rockyarchipelago shorelines, fresh air and clear streams for bathing and fishing. The drinking water here is just as clearand refreshing. Swedish tap water is some of the purest (and best) in the world – try it for yourself! The midnightsun in the north attracts countless visitors, as does the chance for a wilderness adventure – if you're really lucky, you may get to see the Nordic "Big Five" in their natural environment: elk, wolf, bear, lynx and wolverine.

Swedish design goes global

Swedish design is a well-known concept throughout the world. It unites form and functionality, aesthetics andecology. Designers such as Carl Malmsten, Bruno Mathson and Jonas Bohlin have created enduring designclassics, while furniture from family-owned company IKEA can be found in living rooms, bedrooms and kitchensin locations ranging from Europe and the USA to Saudi Arabia, China and Malaysia. Sweden is also stronglyrepresented within the world of fashion, with brands such as Tiger, Filippa K, and J Lindeberg. Not to mentionH&M, the third largest clothing chain in the world.

Swedish cuisine

Swedes' curiosity and inclination for taking on board new trends also applies to food. New dishes, exoticingredients and exciting spices are combined with classic Swedish home cooking. Many traditional dishes areclosely linked with various festivals: the beginning of August sees the start of crayfish season, goose is eaten on St.Martin's Day and Midsummer is celebrated with herring and snaps, naturally.
