PRAYING FOR THE DEAD AT MASS
When Saint Augustine was a young boy, he lost his father, Later in life
he buried a dear friend, and when his mother, Monica, died, he wrote:
“I closed her eyes and an overwhelming grief welled into my heart and
was about to flow forth in floods of tears. But at the same time under a
pow erful act of mental control my eyes held back the flood and dried it
up. The inward struggle put me into great agony.”
Like all of us, Augustine wondered what happened to his loved ones
when they died. He had learned from the Church that when some peo-
ple they go right to heaven. They are the pure souls who have followed
Je sus and loved others as he has loved them. The Lord himself speaks
of them: they feed the hungry, visit the lonely, clothe the naked, and
willingly sacrifice themselves on whatever cross God might call them
to car ry.
But then there are those, Augustine suggested, who were, indeed, saints, most of the time. But at the
moment of their death they were truly fit for neither heaven nor hell. They are the folks who have
sought to follow Jesus, to worthily celebrate the Sacraments, to live a life worthy of their calling, but
who at the moment of their death still have a long list of unfinished business. People they never
really forgave, broken relationships they never truly sought to heal, forgotten people they never
loved, prayers they never said, thing they never gave to God.
Would God send such folks to hell? No, Augustine concludes. The greatness of God’s mercy, the
depth of his love will grant such poor souls a place of purgation, a purification which would make
them fit to join the saints in the Kingdom of Heaven. Purgatory, therefore, is the most optimistic of
doctrines: it teaches a second chance and always flows one way. That’s why we pray for our loved
ones at Mass. I pray for my grandmother, my mother and father, my friend Loretta, my classmate
David, and so many others who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again. We offer Mass as
well for the Bishops of Worcester and the Rectors of this Cathedral Church on the anniversary of
their death.
This is what it means when you read in the bulletin that a Mass has been offered for a deceased person. It is a
way of the whole parish joining the priest in offering the Mass for the forgiveness of whatever sins they may
have committed and their eternal happiness in heaven. If you would like to have a Mass offered for someone,
just call the office or drop an envelope with the name of the person, your name and the preferred date. While it
is customary to include an offering with the request for a Mass, that is entirely up to you. The important thing
is that we offer Mass for those whom you have loved, for their refreshment, light and peace with God forever
in the Kingdom of Heaven.

ORANDO POR LOS DIFUNTOS EN LA MISA
Cuando San Agustín era un niño, perdió a su padre, más tarde en la vida
enterró a un querido amigo, y cuando su madre, Mónica, murió, escribió:
“Le cerré los ojos y un dolor abrumador brotó en mi corazón y estaba a
punto de fluir en inundaciones de lágrimas. Pero al mismo tiempo, bajo un
poderoso acto de control mental, mis ojos contuvieron la inundación y la
secaron. La lucha interior me puso en una gran agonía ".
Como todos nosotros, Agustín se preguntó qué les pasaría a sus seres
queridos cuando murieron. Había aprendido de la Iglesia que cuando
algunas personas van directo al cielo son las almas puras que han seguido
a Jesús y han amado a los demás como él los ha amado. El Señor mismo
habla de ellos: alimentan a los hambrientos, visitan a los solitarios, visten
a los desnudos y voluntariamente se sacrifican en cualquier cruz que Dios
los llame a llevar.
Pero luego están aquellos, sugirió Agustín, que eran, de hecho, santos, la mayor parte del tiempo.
Pero en el momento de su muerte, no eran verdaderamente aptos para el cielo ni para el infierno.
Son las personas que han buscado seguir a Jesús, celebrar dignamente los sacramentos, vivir una
vida digna de su llamado, pero que en el momento de su muerte todavía tienen una larga lista de
asuntos pendientes. Personas a las que nunca perdonaron realmente, relaciones rotas que nunca
realmente buscaron sanar, personas olvidadas que nunca amaron, oraciones que nunca dijeron,
cosas que nunca le dieron a Dios.
¿Enviaría Dios a esas personas al infierno? No, concluye Agustín. La grandeza de la misericordia
de Dios, la profundidad de su amor otorgará a esas pobres almas un lugar de purificación, una
purificación que las capacitará para unirse a los santos en el Reino de los Cielos. El purgatorio, por
tanto, es la más optimista de las doctrinas: enseña una segunda oportunidad y siempre fluye en un
sentido. Por eso oramos por nuestros seres queridos en la Misa. Oro por mi abuela, mi madre y mi
padre, mi amiga Loretta, mi compañero de clase David y tantos otros que se han ido a descansar
con la esperanza de resucitar. Ofrecemos misa también para los obispos de Worcester y los rectores
de esta Iglesia Catedral en el aniversario de su muerte.
Esto es lo que significa cuando lees en el boletín que se ha ofrecido una misa por una persona
fallecida. Es una forma en que toda la parroquia se une al sacerdote para ofrecer la Misa por
el perdón de los pecados que hayan cometido y su felicidad eterna en el cielo. Si desea que se
ofrezca una misa para alguien, simplemente llame a la oficina o envíe un sobre con el nombre
de la persona, su nombre y la fecha preferida. Si bien es costumbre incluir una ofrenda con la
solicitud de una misa, eso depende totalmente de usted. Lo importante es que ofrezcamos
Misa por aquellos que hemos amado, para la consolación, luz y paz con Dios para siempre en
el Reino de los Cielos.
