Horatio Alger West Virginia Scholarship Program6 $7,000 Scholarships Awarded

Funded through the generosity of the Horatio Alger Association

The Horatio Alger West Virginia Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the State of West Virginia who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger West Virginia Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Be enrolled full time as a high school senior in West Virginia; be progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of 2015 with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation

Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution)

Demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required) Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity Maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 Be a resident of the State of West Virginia; and Be a United States citizen

Students must complete the PROMISE Scholarship Application (Application for State-Level Financial Aid Programs) by this date. Students may use their eighth semester (typically the spring semester of their senior year) grades to achieve PROMISE eligibility (3.0 GPA in the core classes and overall), but must apply by March 1st.

In order to be considered for the PROMISE Scholarship, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be received by the Federal Student Aid Processing Center on or before March 1, 2015, and meet the conditions for processing.

The Mary Olive Eddy Jones Art Scholarship is offered to West Virginia college students who are majoring in art.

Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Fellowship (Currently Not Available)

The Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Fellowship is a scholarship program that is offered to a West Virginia student who plans on attending the Fairmont State College Aerospace Program.

Helen Holt Mollohan Scholarship

The Helen Holt Mollohan Scholarship is offered to a West Virginia female who is attending Glenville State College.

Teaming to Win Business ScholarshipThe Teaming to Win Business Scholarship is given to a West Virginia college student pursuing a degree in business administration

Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship Program

Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship Program is a student financial aid program designed to enable and encourage students to pursue teaching careers at the pre-school, elementary, middle or secondary school level.

Undergraduate and graduate scholarships, not to exceed $5,000 per academic year, are awarded on the basis of academic qualifications and interest in teaching. The purpose of the program is to assist West Virginians interested in obtaining a teaching certificate and committed to the pursuit of a teaching career in West Virginia's public schools. Due to limited funding, priority is given to junior, senior, and graduate students.

To APPLY: The deadline to apply for the Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship is March 1, 2014. The application will be posted by December 1 on CFWV.com.Award Criteria

Applicants must be West Virginia residents who are or will be enrolled on a full-time basis in an accredited institution of higher education in West Virginia pursuing a course of study leading to a teacher certificate at the preschool, middle, or secondary level in West Virginia.

Recipients of the Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship must agree to teach at the public pre-school, elementary, middle or secondary school level in West Virginia for two years for each year of scholarship assistance. However, if a scholar enters a teacher shortage area, an exceptional children's program, a school having less than average academic results or a school in an economically disadvantaged area as designated by the West Virginia Board of Education, then the scholar must teach one year for each year for which the scholarship was received.

There are also limited provisions for meeting the teaching requirement through alternative service. Students who fail to meet the teaching or alternative service requirements are required to repay the scholarship received plus interest and any required collection fees

Elks National Foundation Scholarships

Criteria:

Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.

Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications

are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify. Male and female students compete separately

Amount: Most Valuable Student Scholarships 500 four-year scholarships, ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, for graduating high school seniors based on financial need, leadership and scholarship.

Legacy Awards $4,000 ($1,000 year for four years) merit-based scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks who are members in good standing.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicant must be a high school senior planning to enroll in a four-year West Virginia College or university.

2. Applicant must submit a 300 word essay (double spaced and one sided) explaining, “The importance of (your major here) in today’s society”. This must be postmarked no later than April 15, 2014.

3. On a separate piece of paper please list and explain 2 or 3 leadership and/or service activities in which you have been involved in throughout high school and provide a short description of each activity.

4. Please provide a letter of recommendation in a sealed envelope from someone other than a family member or friend. (A teacher and/or clergy qualify.)

5. Preference will be given to applicants entering an energy related program. (Recommendation by a WV Desk and Derrick member is desirable, but not required.)

6. Scholarship awards will be sent directly to the respective winning applicant’s college or university.

7. Scholarships will be made on a one-time only basis.

8. All applications MUST be signed by applicant’s guidance counselor or principal.
