Support for the individual scientist – no networks!

Global peer-review

No predetermined topics

Support in all fields of science and the humanities

The ERC supports excellence in frontier research through

a bottom-up, individual-based, pan-European competition

Scientific governance: independent Scientific Council

with 22 members including the ERC President; full

authority over funding strategy

Support by the ERC Executive Agency (autonomous)

Quality as the only criterion

• High risk, high gain

• Basic and applied science

• Going beyond disciplinary boundaries

• Make Europe more attractive for global

scientific talent

• Favour “brain gain” and reverse “brain drain”

• Improve career opportunities and independence

• Increase competition/recognition/visibility

Evaluation of excellence at two levels:

• Excellence of the Research Project

Ground breaking nature and potential impact (important

challenges, developments across disciplines, high risk- high gain)

Scientific Approach (novel concepts/methodology)

Excellence of the Principal Investigator

Intellectual capacity (achievements beyond the state of the art)

Creativity (evidence of creative independent thinking,

for AdG additionally: Demonstrated leadership in training and

advancement of young scientists)

Commitment (commitment of working –time to the project: minimum

30% for AdG and min. 50% in an EU Member State or Associated

country)

Excellence is the sole evaluation criterion

Page 14: HORIZON 2020 ERC funding opportunities - · PDF fileSocietal challenges ... Applied Life Sciences and Non-Medical Biotechnology Social Sciences & Humanities ... 1 that gives first

Excellent investigators…

• Promising track-record of recent achievements (at least one or more of

the following benchmarks for AdG)

Significant peer-reviewed publications in high impact

journals/conference proceedings (10)

major research monographs (3)

International recognition through awards, prizes, Academy

memberships, Editorial Boards

Invited presentations to established international conferences

(10)

Member of Organisational/Steering Committee of international

conferences in the field (3)

Depending on the field: Patents (5), research expeditions (3)

Funding record and Mentoring (ability to inspire young

researchers)

When to submit?

│ 18

Increasing number applications causes low success rates

and high panel workload

2014 Resubmission restrictions

• 2013 applicants : if "C" at step 1, cannot resubmit in 2014

• 2014 applicants, tighter resubmission rules :

o If B (Step 1 or Step 2) : will have to wait out one year

o If C (Step1) : will have to wait out two years

Possibility to provide a Researcher ID (e.g. ORCHID) in

A- and B-forms

Interdisciplinary projects : justification paragraph in

Abstract (Part B1)

Changes in the panel descriptors in particular for all SH

panels (please see the WP and the GfA)

Page 19: HORIZON 2020 ERC funding opportunities - · PDF fileSocietal challenges ... Applied Life Sciences and Non-Medical Biotechnology Social Sciences & Humanities ... 1 that gives first

Proposal preparation: Part B1

Pay particular attention to the ground-breaking nature of

the research project – no incremental research!

Know your competitors – what is the state of play and why

is your idea and scientific approach outstanding?

Remember that only the extended synopsis is read at Step

1 that gives first impression – concise and clear

presentation is crucial (evaluators are not necessarily all

experts in the fields!)

Also in Part B1 outline of the methodological approach

(feasibility!)

Page 20: HORIZON 2020 ERC funding opportunities - · PDF fileSocietal challenges ... Applied Life Sciences and Non-Medical Biotechnology Social Sciences & Humanities ... 1 that gives first

Proposal preparation: Part B2

Do not waste the second part (Part B2) – provide

sufficient detail on methodology, work plan, selection of

case studies etc. (15 pages)

(in particular important for the AdG as the full proposal is the

only basis for the selection)

Check coherency of figures, justify requested resources

and involvement of team members

New financial rules under H2020 (e.g. 25% rate of indirect

costs to be applied)

Page 21: HORIZON 2020 ERC funding opportunities - · PDF fileSocietal challenges ... Applied Life Sciences and Non-Medical Biotechnology Social Sciences & Humanities ... 1 that gives first

Submission of proposals: Preparation process

register early, get familiar with the system and templates

and start filling in the forms on the Participant Portal

http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/page/home

make use of the help tools and call documents (FAQ,

GfA, WP) to prepare your proposal

submit your proposal and relevant annexes well in

advance before the deadline to avoid last minute errors

! A submitted proposal can be revised until the call deadline

by submitting a new version and overwriting the previous

one (only what is in the system at the time of the deadline will be

evaluated)
