Progress 8 2016
New way of measuring how well students make progress.
Includes how well students of all abilities have done.
Tells you whether students get better or worse grades compared to students in other school.
Results are compared to the national average of students with similar academic starting positions.

How Progress 8 is calculated: The Basket 8
Results, in up to 8 qualifications are counted in a
school’s Progress 8 score

History, Geography,
Languages
Understanding the Progress 8 score
• A schools progress 8 score is usually between -1 and +1.
• +1: Students in that school achieving on average 1 grade more in each
qualification than similar students nationally.
• Schools with scores below -0.5 are not achieving the minimum
standard expected by the government.
• Schools with +0.5 or greater is making well above expected progress
with its students.
• Average P8 of all pupils nationally is 0.
• It is a relative measure and shows if the schools students perform above
or below the national average.
Attainment 8
Average attainment by each student in their best 8 subjects.
KS2 on entry
Progress 8
Calculating the Progress 8 score
• KS2 Fine level 5.5
• Attainment 8 estimate is 69
• Attainment 8 actual is 65
Progress 8
Actual attainment 8 – estimated attainment 8
65 – 69 = - 4
Average progress 8 = - 4/10 = - 0.4

A changing landscape 2017
…at primary
‘The system of national curriculum levels is no longer used by the
Government to report end of key stage assessment. The…measure…will
not appear in the performance tables for 2016.’
Students now tracked against age-related expectations:
• working towards the expected standard (developing)
• working at the expected standard (securing)
• working at greater depth (mastering)
The skills Year 6 will have studied…
Y6
Writing: TA
Reading: Scaled Score
Mathematics: Scaled Score
SPaG: Scaled Score
Scaled Score: 100 (nat. ave.)
Score is between 80 - 120
New primary accountability measures
• % of pupils achieving ‘expected standard’
(in English reading, English writing AND maths)
• the pupils’ average Scaled Score
(in English reading and maths)
• % of pupils achieving at a high standard
(in English reading, English writing AND maths)
• the pupils’ average progress
(in English reading, in English writing, in maths)

The opportunity…
• to understand what age-related skills students have studied in Y6
• to understand what the national standard looks like for English reading, English writing, maths and so exactly what students are able to do on entry
…at secondary
‘The current ‘expected progress’ measure will not appear in performance
tables from 2016. The system of levels that underpins this measure has been
removed…’
Students now tracked against the Progress 8 measure:
‘In 2016, a school will be below floor standard if its Progress 8 score is
below -0.5… If a school’s performance falls below this floor standard, then
the school may come under scrutiny through inspection’.
Changes at GCSE
Reformed GCSE qualifications (100% exam)
• Three phases: 2016 - English and maths
2017 - sciences, history, geography, languages, art, music, drama, food, computer science, PE, RE (current Year 10)
2018 - DT, business, child development, health and social care
• New grading system (1-9)
‘The bottom of grade 1 will be aligned with the bottom of grade G.
Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 4 and above as currently achieve a grade C and above.
Broadly the same proportion of students will achieve a grade 7 and above as currently achieve a grade A and above.’
The new grading system
5 and above to become the new ‘good’ pass (existing C+)
The opportunity…
• to rethink the traditional secondary assessment and key stage model (levels at
KS3 and grades at KS4)
• to raise expectations and build a more fluid learning journey across secondary
Our approach…
• to create 1 key stage (Y7-11)
• to create a 5 year linear path (curriculum and data)
• to assess against a common criteria in EVERY year (GCSE), creating focused
assessment points to measure small-steps in progress
• to track progress using a common language (1-9)
The benefits...
• to drive progress from Y7
• repeatedly develop exam technique, so that students can evidence skills/content
successfully by the end of Y11
• to raise aspirations (no ceiling)
Linear flightpaths …
Initial support with tracking…
to create 1 key stage (Y7-11)
to assess against a common criteria (GCSE)
to create a 5 year linear path (curriculum and data)
to track progress using a common language (1-9)
to drive progress from Y7
to raise aspirations (no ceiling)

Informing parents
Questions you might want to ask…
• What is your Progress 8 figure? Where are your strengths and weaknesses (baskets)?
• What is the profile of your new Y7?
• (How) is your curriculum structured/changing? Does it support student success?
• How are your students being assessed/tracked across years 7-11 (levels? grades? 1 system? 2 systems?)
• How are your students being prepared for the new GCSEs? (100% exam? Literacy focus?)
• How are your parents being informed about the national changes?
