Introduction

Session-Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is a good indicator of internal training load in team

sports, like football/soccer (Casamichana et al. 2013, Coutts et al. 2008, Impellizzeri et al. 2004)

Often used with professional youth soccer players

(Brink et al. 2010, Wrigley et al., 2012)

Introduction

Different periodization models are currently being used within soccer

(Oliveira, 2007, van Winckel et al. 2015, Tamarit, 2007)

Training approaches within a micro-cycle may vary accordingly; meaning that the focus of each training day will be different

(Oliveira, 2007)

Horizontal alternation: 'This is the principle in charge of regulating the relationship between effort and recovery. In

biological terms, it is not possible for a body to deliver constantly the same effort, every day.’

According to Resende (mentioned by Gaiteiro 2006)

Introduction

The aim of this study was to look at the horizontal alternation in daily training load

within Arabic professional youth soccer players during the in-season.

Hypothesis was that there would be a horizontal alternation in training load in a typical training

week during in-season.

Method

Fifteen U15 youth soccer players playing in a professional youth academy in Saudi Arabia were

selected.

A minimum of two players were chosen from each of the three main out- field playing

positions.

No goalkeepers.

Method

Session-Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) was used as an indicator of daily training load (TL) in Arbitrary Units (AU):

RPE (0-10 Borg scale Arabic) *

Session duration

Data was collected for nine typical training weeks during the in-season and consisted of an average number of five

sessions, including one game.

Data analysis

Training days were categorized according to different training approaches based on days

before or after the game: • Loading (Match Day -4 and -3) • Tapering (Match Day -2 and -1)

• Match Day • Recovery (Match Day +1 and +2).

Discussion

Validation Arabic Borg Scale

Culture and subjective data vs reliability

There is a need for using subjective AND objective training load data in the culture of the Middle East. To get a better understanding of a player’s training

load.

Discussion

In summary, horizontal alternation in daily TL within Arabic professional youth soccer players during the in-season is only apparent between

Recovery and Match Day, and between Tapering and Match Day.
