Page 2: Horor Poster Analysis

The title of the film “Evil Dead” suggests immediately the genre of the film, horror. The word evil depicts a sinister atmosphere that the film involves. And the word dead, could mean something had been resurrected or some time of haunting.

The main image on the poster is a tree, bursting through a small cabin. this reveals the setting of the movie, being in a rural area. Maybe the woods. It also creates a sense of enigma, as to why is the tree growing through the house, not around it.

The poster suggests a single genre; horror. This is shown through the generic red and black colour scheme. The colour red suggests danger, and the black suggests darkness.

The film’s stars aren't shown in this poster at all. This suggests that the characters aren't well known or important. They also aren't seen in the poster which also suggests their low importance.

The tagline of the movie’s poster is “Evil will rise again..” this backs up my ‘resurrection’ theory. It also reflects on the tree, as it’s roots blossom and the tree rises, destroying humanity (the cabin.)

There aren't many credits on this poster, only that of the designer (Mental Shed Studios) and their website.

By seeing this poster, I feel intrigued by its aesthetics. Its minimalistic layout appeals to me, not revealing too much information, making me want to see it.

What appeals to me the most is the well designed title. The way the words connects is really clever and I love the sharp design to the lettering.

The film’s title ‘Vilsen’ is German for ‘Hunter.’ This title could suggest two things; either the film focuses on the hunter, or the prey.

The main image is the symbol shown in the centre of the page. It seems to look like a deer head – reflecting on the ‘hunting’ subject as a deer is a common form of prey. But failing to see the deer, it also looks like some sort of dress. This creates a sense of enigma for the viewer.

The poster itself doesn’t really reveal much about the film or it’s genre. I'm lead to believe that it’s a horror, because of it’s dark, distorted colour scheme and the red-ish colour of the symbol. But it could also be a Sci-Fi.

The film’s stars and actors aren’t prominent in the poster. There is a small bit of writing above the title, but it’s hard to read. Also, it will be in German.

The poster doesn’t contain a visible tagline as such. ‘Nu I produktion’ means it’s in production and not yet released.

There are a number of production companies shown towards the bottom of the page. These include ‘GSW’ and ‘WEKO.’

The reason I chose this poster is because of it’s subtle self explanatory; it makes the viewer question it’s meaning. But the symbol really sticks out – and it is a main feature in my movie trailer.

The title ‘Oculus’ means a circular opening. This reflects on the mirror (if you pardon the pun) and how the girl is emerging from its surface.

The main image is the mirror and the female character. This shows the importance of the mirror as a prop, and that the girl shown emerging from the mirror could be it’s main character. It makes us ask how is she doing that? Or why was she in the mirror in the first place?

This poster reflects on the horror genre through it’s gothic colour scheme and its devilish iconography. Mirrors are thought to have been the gateway dark places and the fear factor is increased as every household has some type of mirror.

The film’s stars are portrayed in this particular poster. But the girl seems to play an important role – be it the heroin or the villain.

The character is shown emerging from the mirror itself, she is prominent on the page but is distorted by the mirror. Her facial expression shows relief but also fear – maybe she was trying to escape whatever is lurking beneath the mirror’s surface. She seems to be wearing a night gown, showing her vulnerability as a female.

The movie’s tagline is “You see what it wants you to see.” This suggests that ‘it’ is the mirror, and it has a mind of it’s own.

This poster appeals to me because of it’s interesting main image.

The poster contains the film’s producers, who have happened to produce films such as Paranormal Activity and Insidious. These are great horror films – giving us an insight that this may be just as good.

The title ‘Cloven’ means split, divided. This relates to the division of binary opposites found in a lot of horror films; Good vs. Evil. Cloven is also used to describe a hoof of an animal. A goat possesses a cloven hoof; relating to the (Goat Man) formally known as the devil. This suggests that the story may involve demonic possession

The main image contains a gloomy, woodland atmosphere, reflecting on the dark horror genre. This sets the scene, explaining that the story takes place in a rural area. It also shows a young girl led in the foliage. She appears to be dead, or at least hurt. If this relates to demonic possession, then the girl may be a sacrifice to the devil.

This poster reflects on the horror genre through it’s gothic colour scheme and its devilish iconography. The red symbol stand prominent to the other elements, showing that danger or death is significant in this particular film.

The film’s stars are portrayed in this particular poster. But the girl seems to play an important role – be it the heroin or the villain.

The character is shown as vulnerable. She lays obliviously in a dark woodland area, completely alone. This creates a code of enigma – why is she there?

The movie’s tagline ‘demons never die’ suggests resurrection of some kind. Maybe the resurrection of the devil or a similar entity.

This poster appeals to me because of it’s title and the main image.

The poster contains the film’s producers, who have happened to produce films such as ‘Archfiend’ and ‘Unhallowed.’
