The history genre is based around elements of shock, gore and fear it I believe is a very sharp genre that really grabs the viewers attention and makes them feel certain emotions that can’t be easily shown though other genres. The often play on gruesome scenes to startle the audience. Horror films are commonly very violent films which include some sort of attack. This can come from a range of deadly weapons such as guns and knives to more extreme ones like chainsaws and crossbows. From the genres first beginnings around 1890 it has been centred around vampires and werewolves and this over the years i believe has become a stereotype for this genre, this is because in 1910 Edison studios made the first film type of Frankenstein since then over a period of many years different film makers have tried to capture their own version of a horror film providing many movie firsts such as the first vampire themed movie in 1922 called F W murnau’s noferatu and further films where made such as The monster, London after midnight, The lost world and the phantom carriage which where all produced in the 1920’s. The 1930’s saw the introduction of a new form of horror film the gothic type which blended with science fiction producing films such as Dracula in 1931 and the old dark house in 1932 while these films fit with the historic standard of the genre they presented a much scary concept due to the new gothic element further films such as the mummy in 1932 and the wolf man in 1941 also carried the same characteristics. 1950’s saw the technological breakthrough as some directors saw a bigger market in the land of 3d and a way of fooling the audience. Psycho in 1960 uses many elements in order to trick the audience. It wasn't until the 60’s,70’s and 80’s that success was starting to grow in low budget films such as rosemary’s baby this caused a growth in this form of filmmaking producing films like the exorcist. Many films such as the shinning where up for award nominations proving that a popular way of film making had emerged. Simplistic low budget films such as these have continued to be successes due to films such as paranormal activity. Ever since then the horror genre has thrived because lots of film studios want to keep creating bigger and better and more shocking scenes that will grab the audience’s attention. Many of today's films have had a helping hand due to the improvements in computer technology which has allowed for more fiction and science to enter the world of horror. Many of today's horrors are unrecognisable to the original horrors due to the increase in extreme violence and advances in green screening and graphic effects that we see in films such as Saw, Van helsing , I am legend, the eye, dawn of the dead and doom which have all made huge successes at the box office. Some of the latest horror films include piranha 3d and quarantine both produced in 2010. Overall the horror genre has made many improvements over the years in order to increase revenue and keep the viewers interested, shocked and thrilled.

Page 1: Horror history

The history genre is based around elements of shock, gore and fear it I believe is a very

sharp genre that really grabs the viewers attention and makes them feel certain

emotions that can’t be easily shown though other genres. The often play on gruesome

scenes to startle the audience. Horror films are commonly very violent films which

include some sort of attack. This can come from a range of deadly weapons such as

guns and knives to more extreme ones like chainsaws and crossbows.

From the genres first beginnings around 1890 it has been centred around

vampires and werewolves and this over the years i believe has become a

stereotype for this genre, this is because in 1910 Edison studios made the

first film type of Frankenstein since then over a period of many years

different film makers have tried to capture their own version of a horror film providing

many movie firsts such as the first vampire themed movie in 1922 called F W murnau’s

noferatu and further films where made such as The monster, London after midnight, The

lost world and the phantom carriage which where all produced in the 1920’s. The 1930’s

saw the introduction of a new form of horror film the gothic type which blended with

science fiction producing films such as Dracula in 1931 and the old dark house in 1932 while

these films fit with the historic standard of the genre they presented a much scary concept

due to the new gothic element further films such as the mummy in 1932 and the wolf man

in 1941 also carried the same characteristics. 1950’s saw the technological breakthrough as

some directors saw a bigger market in the land of 3d and a way of fooling the audience.

Psycho in 1960 uses many elements in order to trick the audience. It wasn't until the

60’s,70’s and 80’s that success was starting to grow in low budget films such as rosemary’s

baby this caused a growth in this form of filmmaking producing films like the

exorcist. Many films such as the shinning where up for award nominations

proving that a popular way of film making had emerged. Simplistic low budget

films such as these have continued to be successes due to films such as

paranormal activity. Ever since then the horror genre has thrived because lots of

film studios want to keep creating bigger and better and more shocking scenes

that will grab the audience’s attention. Many of today's films have had a helping

hand due to the improvements in computer technology which has allowed for more fiction

and science to enter the world of horror. Many of today's horrors are unrecognisable to the

original horrors due to the increase in extreme violence and advances in green

screening and graphic effects that we see in films such as Saw, Van helsing , I am

legend, the eye, dawn of the dead and doom which have all made huge successes

at the box office. Some of the latest horror films include piranha 3d and

quarantine both produced in 2010. Overall the horror genre has made many

improvements over the years in order to increase revenue and keep the viewers

interested, shocked and thrilled.
