Winter 2011!

President’s Message: 30 years have gone by and some days I am sure my sanity has left along with the 650 horses we have placed over the years. In that time we have been blessed to accomplish many things with the help of our generous supporters and faithful volunteers. Despite the economy this past year, we still managed to care for 30 horses, purchased a 4wd mule to help with chores, replace a 15 year old 10 x10 run in shed, with a new 12x24. And add electricity to the last area that needed power. We invite you to schedule a tour and visit the farm, to meet the horses and many volunteers at CT oldest equine rescue.

Patty & Everyone at H.O.R.S.E.,

30 years!

Congrats!!!!!!

Reggie is doing wonderful. I can’t believe how much more trust he has in me than when I brought him home 3 years ago. I adore that boy! Thanks so much for Matching us up! H.O.R.S.E. is truly amazing!

Always,

Shannon and Reggie

Dear Slick,

Needless to say I was both happy & sad with the news of your adoption. Even if I have never frequently seen you, you have always been close to me in my heart. Your photos are everywhere. Thanks ever so much for the necklace.

Maybe before you leave for your new home you can offer gift giving tips to my husband. I’ll be coming up soon and maybe you can give me a hint who you’d like me to sponsor once you leave.

Oh yes, the butterfly stamp was perfect. Through H.O.R.S.E., Slick, you have found your wings.

Neigh and Love, Norma

Slick, looking content with his new adopted owner, Debra Rosen!

Volunteering with LOVE!

I came to HORSE of CT almost six years ago with no knowledge of these great animals. In retrospect I had no idea what to expect. I have always loved animals, but it was the usual, cats, dogs and the occasional hamster. Remarkably, I didn't run when the first horse I groomed, Joshua a two thousand pound Belgian, pivoted around and around while I tried to groom him. He was playing with me, welcom-ing me to the edge of his world. Those moments would be repeated with many other horses. There was my beloved Moses, who would stand be-side me and watch the clouds pass over the farm. Moses is adopted now and has a wonderful new home, yet he always retains his place in my heart. There was Taco, a 40 year old, Icelandic pony, who would chase any other horse away who interfered with her being groomed. If you scratched just the right spot, she would stand there tongue out in rever-ie. There have been so many of these noble crea-tions. My buddy Mogul, who always seemed to have cut or hurt himself and wanted a brotherly arm on his shoulder. You start as a volunteer, believing you are doing some good deed. What you find is the horses are giving you an incredible gift. On a routine day, in a perfect moment, at a time of the horse's choosing, they will allow you to cross ever so slightly into their world. It is momentary, fleeting, but incredibly precious. They have accepted you, they love you. You have formed a bond, that will never leave you. The experience does not translate well into our human understanding. It just happens. A small miracle, as a reward for your time. Consider volunteering. You will receive far more than you can ever give!

Very Special Thank You’s Go To : The Pegeen and Fitzgerald Foundation and L. Levenstein. M. Lefco for birthday donations of $95. Zoe Destorres and Abbie Branchflower of C.A.N.T.E.R. at Newtown High School for their donation of $292. Allegra Jacobs, who babysat and pet sat and made $325 for Stetson and Romeo’s care. Lily Fleming, who for her birthday raised $350. Joan Cyrul & Ingrid Wedman, and Volunteers, for hositing the October fundraiser dance that raised the funds to put Boriums, (snowshoes), on the horses. Deb Rosen for her birthday donation of $1100. “The Crown Imperials” The Family and Friends in Memory of Eileen Lawlor, for their generous donation. And to the many unnamed Volunteers. We wouldn’t be here without your generosity and compassion!

LEASE A HORSE

H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut has a new leasing program for people over 18 who want to ride regularly and find out what is involved in caring for a horse before assuming the costs of horse ownership.

For $300 per month, you can ride three times per week (once in the ring, twice on trails). Tack is included; all you are required to bring are a helmet, boots, treats for your horse, and the time to ride and care for your horse. You must allow time to groom your horse after riding. Your horse is available to you on a month-to-month basis. To see a list of horses for lease and their pictures visit our website at http://www.horseofct.org.

For more information, please call Patty at 860.868.1960. H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut is a 501(c)3 non-profit organiza-tion.

Want to Sponsor a Horse?

For $50 a month, you can sponsor a horse of your choice. Sponsorship includes four visits a month where you can groom, spend time with and hand-walk the horse. Some horses are able to carry a small child while hand-walked. If you can't come to the farm, you can still sponsor a horse and one of our volunteers will be happy to take "your" horse for a walk and give it love and good-ies. We'll send you periodic updates and pictures of "your" horse. If you have an e-mail address, include it with your first Spon-sorship check. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Our gift certificates make great gifts for the horse lover in your life. If you know someone who likes horses and wants to get to know them better, a gift sponsorship will do the job. You can give a gift sponsorship for one month, or longer if you prefer. Call H.O.R.S.E. of Connecticut at 860-868-1960 for details.

Dear Patty and H.O.R.S.E. Crew,

It is with great sadness that I am writing to let you know that our sweet Miss Mercy passed away last Saturday as a result of colic. Her vet tried everything to pull her through but it became evident she was not going to make it, so we euthanized her to spare her suffering. We had 10 wonderful years together and I thank you so much for that. Mercy thanks you too. She enjoyed her time here and her (spoiled rotten) retire-ment. She was elderly---and almost deaf, but stoic & sassy to the end. She came when called & did other things (back up, move over, in the stall, through the gate, wait...) with hand signals and gentle & minimal direction (usually without even a halter). We miss her terribly as do her 2 'brothers' Virgil and Brody. I will miss our 'grooming cir-cles'....I groom Virgil, Virgil grooms Mercy, Mercy grooms me. I will miss watching her charging around and rearing up & being a 'pogo-stick' when it snows. Mostly I miss her nicker every time I walk out my front door. She always had a greeting for me and I miss the sound of her voice.

There was a time about 8 years ago I trailered all 3 horses up to VT with 2 friends and we packed through the Green Mountains & camped for 8 days. We needed a lot of fire-wood and asked Mercy to pull some logs/small fallen trees. She had never done it be-fore (to my knowledge) and with just a little sweet-talk & encouragement she pulled those logs to our campsite like she had done it a hundred times before. I think that ex-perience sums up a lot of who she was... smart, loyal, trusting, thoughtful, careful and giving of herself. She loved to please me and I loved to please her. She is badly missed and will be for years to come. Thank you for sharing her with us~ enabling her to be a part of our family. Please keep me on your mailing list. I love H.O.R.S.E. and how it is run and would gladly adopt through you again in the future.

With appreciation and sorrow,

Christina & Ken Johnson & Family

Moxie, Petie, Virgil & Brody

Mercy was 32 years old.

H.O.R.S.E of CT was established in 1982 and moved to its permanent home in1995. Volun-teers staff the organiza-tion and intervene on be-half of suffering equines by providing relief, recov-ery, shelter and rehabili-tation. Once a horse is phys-ically and mentally reha-bilitated, the process of seeking an adoptive home begins. All pro-spective adoptive homes are carefully screened. We require a contract

which requires that a horse shall not be bred or sold. Adoption is a lifetime commitment. H.O.R.S.E. receives no town, state or federal funding. Monies are raised through member-ships, sponsorships, charitable contributions and our own fundraising activities. The donations go directly to the horses. We investigate all cruelty complaints, (which are kept strictly confidential). If a prob-lem exists, cooperation is

first sought from the owner. Prosecution is pursued only when there is no other recourse. Horses placed in our custody are provided with immediate veteri-nary and farrier care. In addition we are available upon request to speak to interested groups to raise public awareness of our pur-pose and support.
