** NEXT MONTHS TRIALCAMPING AT NORTHLANDS

TEAM COSSACKS **

NEWS AND COMMENTWelcome to this summers big colour edition of HR News with contribu-tions from some new scribes hopefully to fill the pages. First wereport on the July trial at Walliswood which Steve Hook publicised soadmirably in the local paper though I’m sure he didn’t write the cornyheadline ‘Everything all White for Trials Ace Luke!’Next Pete Bowker has promised a report on the clubs annual cycle rideorganised by Clint which I understand was a blood soaked event withKate busting her bike hastily repaired by Sam Spear. He riding on arather ancient brakeless push bike also became a scarred victim – soit was a good day. And John Charman and Mimi kindly volunteeredto run the practice event at Rome and do a write up though it was ahot day and only 13 turned up – shame on the rest of you! FinallyTim’s proper motorcycle ride to Sammy Millers Museum was sched-

Page 4: Horsham Riders News

uled for July 24th and he hoped for a good turn out – we hope to readthe outcome.

AND IT’S CAMPING TIME AGAIN …..

At Northlands from Friday 3rd September, gate open from 1pm. A 4

route Yankee trial on Saturday 4th starting at 2pm and a club trial onSunday starting at 10 – 10.15 am. Usual conditions for campers –bring food and water. Other amusing entertainments are assuredeven another round of the wee-ski world championship. In the trialsI am hoping to install a couple of sections using the section boundarymarking method – you’ll see the sign, don’t despair!

COMMITTEE MEETING

Thursday September 16th at Six Bells Newdigate 8pm. Any memberis welcome to throw in their twopennorth on the subjects thatChairman Dave raised and on any other matter. For example John Chas suggested that we run one of our trials as a one route event likeold times. So sections would vary in difficulty from Yellow to Whitebut overall scores would be on one list. And I had an idea fordiscussion around how we could run a proper championship whereYellow observe a Blue/White trial, Blues observe a Yellow/White trialand so on. From two trials would come 1 colours champion.

OFFICIALS ON AMCA FORM – repeat requestWill all team members involved in setting out and clearing up an eventplease sign on this sheet.

AUTUMN SOCIAL SCENE

It’s a bit early to push but the Skittles Night is due on Saturday 23rd

October. It’s a good evening with a meal, a few beers and an excitingcompetition. We can take up to about 50 which may include all thefamily. It’s at the Newdigate pub where we’ve always had anenjoyable time. At the September camp I’ll be taking bookings – getin early!!

Thanks - to our contributors - Dick, Tim, Mike, John C., Pete & Anita, and our photographers: Steve Hook, Adrian Holloway andTrialmag.com and sorry if this reaches you a little later than usual.

WALLISWOOD Club TrialGood Event – Pity about the Entry! July 4th

As the trials calendar wasn’t crammed with events on the day of ourclub trial it was wise to anticipate a big entry, weather great, site dry,

what more could theywant? We ended withthe lowest entry I canremember when only26 signed on. Shamebecause the Montiesteam had put in a lot ofwork staying until 7pmSaturday to get thecourse finished. Thesections were long, yel-low flags ran out, butthe trial was excellentand complimented bymany, John C setwhites, Harry R the

blues and Steve P did yellows. John expected whites to say they werehard but with several good riders the middle score was very low (18)showing they’d had an easy day. Congrats to Harry and Steve as thetarget score of 40 was right on.On my way early, expecting this colossal entry, my rear view mirrorwas obliterated by a large yellow van – ‘Mr Ross’ thinks I, on arrivalhe tells me he’s delayed by a hesitant old fool in a red van – snap! Wehad an early visitfrom landownerDave Leach on amountain bike, he’slooking well. NextAdrian H with sonAdam who rides asmall auto, pushinghim up the Wallis-wood hills endedwith them both dnf.AMCA have now in-sisted that officialsfill in a separatesign on sheet, in the

absence of some of the team Adrian signs for them. And the teamremembered to do a photo – that’s progress. Some had difficultlylocating the venue, one guy took ¾ hour to find it then gave a £20

note for his£12 entry andgot £8 back incoin – I toldhim SammyMiller wrote inhis book ‘avoidriding withlose change inyour pocket asits heavy’. Sohe didn’t win! When I askedDave B why hedidn’t do themountain bike

ride he said ‘I did but no one was there and Helen had come by rail toGomshall so it cost me!’ Turns out the wrong day Sunday was the in

the Newsletter for Saturday 26th – sorry about that!As whites had the biggest entry it was the class to see. Most of themride in a group, by 11.30 they had got to section 5. It took them till

1pm to complete the 1st lap – the sections were long and hard toremember. A few blues came first Dave B had a double 5 andabandoned thesection after 2logs disturbed hisconfidence butGraham K gotround for a 3 witha rapid heart beatsaying ‘anyonegot a brandy?’ Asolitary yellowHarry R thoughthe’d had 3 tillsomeone saidhe’d missed agate them camethe whites. Steve

Page 7: Horsham Riders News

F, Dave R, Pete B were all clean as was Clint on his TLR twin shockbut similarly mounted Sam P lost 1 and Mike 3, but John C who’d setthe route got a 5 on those logs again.Section 6 dropped down to the stream edge where all except Mikewere clean. Ben R got round the yellow for a doubtful 3 but Harrymissed anther gate. Another useful tip came from John Y who’s tooold to recall long sections, he had wife Anita telling him where thenext gate was, he won the yellows – was this outside assistance?Section 7 & 8 went much the same way - I saw Luke T making lightwork, flicking the bike about wherever he wanted and leaping overbits not in the section – ‘but he’s 40 years younger than me!’ saysSteve F. Ed C managed to move a large angled log out of the way forthose following so Mike had a 0. He reckoned the earliest sectionswere tight and tricky where he lost most marks was between the treeson section 1- where John C dismounted to pull me up the hill to getback for lunch.Looking at the results our two Red riders were dnf and even YELLOWSonly had 6 finishers with Anita guided John losing 11 – that’s a lot for

him so the route wasn’t that easy. Steve P was 2nd HR on 37 and Joe

A on 42 was 3rd both these had good results well ahead of the forgetfulHarry who could build a garden fence with all the gates he missed!BLUES saw 3 visitors in the first positions (no wonder they all said howgood the trial was) but leading HR was Sam A on 38 (he was a whiterider last time) and Graham K just 3 marks behind. Mike Hyden wasalso pleased with his result and he rode well to finish on 62. Thatleaves Chairman Dave who also praised the event.WHITES Luke, Clint and Steve F ended 1, 2, 3 all ever fearful of anunwanted dab, it was that close. Dave R, Sean P and John C wereanother group separated by a single mark, Dave started out on lap 1without his cards but finding he was going well went back to get thempunched up – he doesn’t normally bother and likes a dnf. Jake P who’sadvisor/tutor Luke has been winning on blues several times butcouldn’t keep up with the master on this course. What I really enjoyedwas watching the 2 TLRs, they sounded and looked lovely. I wishedfor one! Tim had one in the 80’s but was always cursing it for clutchand starting problems and got rid of it. Now they hold a high price andonce restored to Clint perfection are a much desired machine – Clintrides it better than his Mont. If anyone wants to give me a Xmaspresent – that’ll do!I went off course a bit then. It really was a splendid event so well doneMonties for giving some of the best sections seen at Walliswood –

even if they were a bit long! Thanks to them and all the other whohelped clearing up so quickly.

HR MTB Ride   Holmbury St.Mary

Once again the day had come around for the HR club mountain bikeride.

As usual this was well organised by Clint and Sam, they even broughtthe scorching weather along! Anita and I arrived at the car park tofind Clint, and Sam (who came equipped with enough spares and toolsin his pockets to run a cycle shop!) and Dave R patiently waiting forthe masses to arrive.

Then Fiona arrived in the car , while Katie, Tim and Mike had opted fora ‘Tour de France’ warm up by Mike cycling from Horsham to Capel,to join up with Tim, and Katie – who was streaks ahead (obviously!)on her brand new bike!.

Looking like that was about all the turnout was going to be, we allheaded up into the Holmbury hills for some fun in the sun.

A superb area of which to ride followed, and we all gradually workedour way weaving through the humid trees and tracks.

Page 10: Horsham Riders News

All was going well until a rough downhill track, when getting near tothe bottom- suddenly dust clouds, bodies and bikes were strewnacross the track! Katie had crashed christening her new steed bynarrowly missing a tree and ending up in the bushes, cut but ok! Timhad crashed into her bike but came out unscathed. After the excite-ment of the incident had gone, we then carried on reaching the

‘chicken run’ – a twisty downhill track or for those who opted for theeasier ‘chicken out’ run along the hill.

We split into two groups and went our separate routes, easy or hard.We next reached a rest point, and waited for some of the others tocatch up, and then more drama! -as a result of the earlier crashKatie’s chain had eventually broken, Sam came to the rescue to repairthe damage before anybody could move, and then we were on ourway again through the superb countryside.

After a good couple of hours in the heat and a few puffed out faces wefinally arrived  back at the finish, ending the day in the local pub fora well earned pint and some Grub! A big thanks to Clint and Sam forworking out such a great ride and Keeping everybody in checkespecially Katie!

FUN IN ROME Practice Trial 10th July

If you haven’t been to a practice trial you aretruly missing out. These great days willbecome a thing of the past if we don’t getmore support from you all. The opportunityto ride for a very small fee on fantastic groundwith expert advice cannot be missed. We setout 7 sections which you ride as much as yourheart desires often with priceless advice fromthe like of HR Clint who gave up a whole dayof his weekend not to ride, but to help anyonenot proud to ask. We all need help no matterwhat it’s with, either making a turn or jump-ing a ditch or log. The started with myself,Adrian and young Adam, then Harry Ross

turned up shortly followed by Graham. Adrian set out the yellows andson Adam did the red route. Harry, Graham and I did the Blues. It’sfair to say the blues were maybe a little hard on one or two sectionsbut time was on our side to keep trying until we had them beat or oldage and dodgy backs beat us. The advice given by Clint got all of usover most of the obstacles laid out to a point where I believe Grahamwill be having a go at some whites. Young Adam did a great job onthe red route and going by what I saw he could be a future championwith a few more practice trials. Let’s hope they continue. We laid outall the sections really close and went round together most of the timeand what a laugh we had, even Seanturned up on his beautiful TLR to try outsome changes he had made and I believehe will come again. So unless you arealways ahead of Clint and Sean in theresults then I know you could benefit fromthese trials.I would like to thank everyone that helpedset out and all those that stayed to helpclear up. Also the priceless advice fromClint. You couldn’t put a value on thesetrials so please don’t let them fade away.I hope you will all remember the next one

on Sunday 9th October at Mannings Heath.Maybe if you want to help you can talk to

DUSTY AND SANDY MANNINGS HEATHAugust 1st Club Trial

More than the usual chaos at the sitewhere early arrivals were parked wher-ever they could find a gap. Mike foundthe gate had been wrongly locked bythe shooting guys so a couple of vansand the clubhouse blocked the roadwhile it was sorted out. Then beforeI’d got the door opened Iain P, Harry Rand mate wanted to sign on - it’s 9.10am!!It appears fashionable to arrive with 2bikes now – John C had a 200 Fanticand his normal Mont, Sean P his TLRand an 02 two stroke Mont. I told LukeT he should get a second bike now twinshocks are in but his Grandad says hecan’t afford the one he’s got. John onlyrode the Fanny for a few yards before

coming back to change bikes. Sean started his alternative in amassive cloud of smoke, then complained it didn’t rev and found arestrictor in the new exhaust he’d fitted. Goes home to changeexhaust after a lap. At the end reckons he rode better on the firstpipe!

The new generation are beginning to arrive. Adrian H had updatedAdam’s auto to a Beta 50,Tony F had daughter Emilyriding reds on an auto –Jamie said ‘no contest’. JoeA rode Yellows for the first

time and came 3rd! Kev Bassessed his 10 year old asan up and coming star buthis Mum had kept him in forthe day. You can tell whenthe old’uns get there – theyforget their cards, take too

Page 13: Horsham Riders News

many and sign on theschoolboy sheet – nowonder confusionreigns, especially whenCoC Ian J comes backto tell me not to startyet as the yellow sec-tions have too fewgates. He rides off tosort out but with bikesbuzzing everywherethe hooter sends themoff. When John Y andBob C arrive I knowthat’s the lot for the

day, we had 52 entries with many from the Kent area – why and howI’ll never know. The site seems full of Ians, one’s gone off with the yellow flags whilesocialite Ian Mc sits in the clubhouse relating his inebriating experi-ence on a friends’ yacht in the South of France – he won’t be atcommittee he says – he has further social commitments. Iain Pcomes back after ½ hour – no punch on section 10, Ian Mc supplierand Iain P goes back.

It’s quite odd when you go looking – you rarely find a sizeable groupto watch, only the whites who watch each other like hawks on the firstlap. On the Yellows Iain P and Kev B had finished and gone, Mick Dwas about to start section 8 when I got there, he mentioned some-thing about an evil spirit, started his bike, rode 5 yards and the enginestalled – ‘it’s you’ he shouts! Joe A was doubling up, on No. 3 withrevs high it’s up the bank clean but didn’t slow for the tight bit, Samhis Dad has a word and it’s better next time.Blues had gained a few riders as it was a dry event. Harry R rose tothe challenge but only for 1 lap which he said was exhausting, whenhe went back to Yellow they were boring! Chris H another first timer, stuck with blues but at the finish said he’d have to go and lay in adarkened room : John Y (itma on yellow) was encouraged by Bob Cto do blue and he suffered a larger score than usual Watching atsection 8 with Anita she reckons when John was younger he was a‘lovely mover’, John dropped 1 but Bob C and Tim H were clean.Section 2 John was taking a 5 but Ian Mc who’d cleaned it till I arrivedlost a dab which he held while being rude to me so it was really 5.Stan Metcalf the old ex Royal Enfield works rider, was on his Cub and

Page 14: Horsham Riders News

riding well but endedearly with dnf. Steve Pon section 10 waspleased to get out for0 as some mud haddeveloped in the ditchfor whites, blues wentacross – ‘I nearly hada panic attack there’he says. Sam A andMike Hyden were thefirst HR’s on the listand equal to the topliners, then quite a gapto Bob C and Tim H in

3rd and 4th, only Chris H really had an endurance test as par on allroutes was in an acceptable range i.e. around 40.

Whites Crossing the banks at the top of Section 3 was one of thetricky bits for this group. Jake P had a nice 5, Pete B an impressiveone as he tumbled down the bank after his bike. John C got awaywith a 3 and Clint dropped 1. Then Ed C showed them all up andcleaned it rapidly followed by Luke T and Jamie J. On section 8 Seanwas making bike excuses before he set off then only had a dab asdoes Ed, Clint and Pete; John C dropped 3 (bordering on 5), Jack Nwho’d been talked into doing whites was not finding them easy anddismounted on the bank for a definitive big one becoming a majorearth mover in the process, later he dnf. Section 9 could have beena good one if someone had gone into the stream for the onlookersentertainment but none did though on lap 1 Ed looked like he wasgoing to and on lap 4 John C actually came off promising to make asplash but he just got dirty. How inconsiderate! At the end Luke Tand Jamie J levelled on 11, but Clint and Sean on twin shocks doubledthat. I was told Clint did a Tony B impression on section 7 where hemoved the bike 90 degrees in mid air causing concern amongst thelesser lights who couldn’t make out how he did it.

Thanks then to the Indian who set the show up Ian and Iain, Brian andPaul Barnes and Eric Scutt – especially though to Ian and Iain whocame on Sunday to ensure it all went smoothly and clear up. With allroutes ending in the 40/50 marks band they should be pleased withtheir efforts. A last thank you to Steve Hook who spent the day

REETH 3 DAY TRIALHas 200 entries to ride the moors in the ‘Summer Wine Country’. There areonly a few riders from the South and Mike tries to be one of them. With NewZealand Steve he got an entry this year for what was a brilliant event. Theonly results I have was that Steve came last – because he told me!

Ed C, Guy Chandler, Barry Roads, Neil Bowker, Johnny Sands and WayneMoseley joined Steve and myself for this years Reeth 3 Day. Based in Grinton,N.Yorks we had it easy for two of the three days. As always there was thesuperb scenery, rideable rocky river sections and pretty good weather. Aftera few incidents, Wayne’s bog diving, Steve’s chain tangles and dragging bikesup the rock staircase to Punchard we made it to the end. Guy rode the hardroute and finished halfway up in 27th. The rest of us rode the easier clubmanroute - Barry lost 55, Johnny 71, Ed 196 , Mike 216, Wayne 219 and Steve337. So a bit of a challenge for some of us......Mike H.

MOTORCYCLE RUN TO SAMMY MILLERS MUSEUM – 24th July

It wasn’t raining so we went! Gordon on Triumph, myself on Buell, met upwith Clint on one of his Ducati’s, John C on an older Ducati and Steve P (fromStreatham and who the next day did a long distance trial 98 miles 81/2 hoursnear Dover – must be keen) Kawasaki mounted. We stopped on the way for greasy breakfast and tea in popular bikers Café onA272. Easy ride down although you must remember that when you areleading pottering along, the guy at the back is blasting away to make everyovertaking opportunity!Sammy’s Museum has over 300 bikes nearly all Vintage and Veteran in theusual beautiful condition. Every conceivable configuration of engine, frame, forks and suspension was tried in the early days of bike design. I liked the1910 1000cc in line V Twin, built in USA, hard tyres, no brakes and exposedprimary chains etc. Apparently they used to build wooden banked tracks torace round and this machine held the speed record at 97 mph! This type ofracing was abandoned in the 1930’s due to so many spectators’ deaths withriders coming over the banking. Those were the days…………….……? Tim
