Please turn to Page 11 for further listings of those honored at our Annual Meeting and Volunteer Luncheon.

A company that cares. Nelson Patterson (left), Vice President of Baxter Healthcare in Medina, accepts the Business/Civic Award from Hospice Development Director Marsha Rivers. Baxter and its employees support the Hospice Duck Race, Bouquet Sale, and Day of Caring, through United Way.

Commitment to compassion. Carol Culhane (left), an Orleans artist and community leader, received the Mary Jane Sahukar Award. Culhane was recognized for her myriad contributions to Hospice over the years.

(Executive Perspective, continued)

We, of course, experienced growing pains as we all took on added responsibilities and saw the fruition of many years of planning.

Listed here are some of our 2013 Accomplishments:

1. Developed a Palliative Care Program to assist those community members who may have a serious illness and are still undergoing treatment

2. Appropriately tailored our policies and procedures to accommodate change to a 24/7 agency, especially in regards to providing in-service education to the entire staff

3. Streamlined our medication ordering process to increase efficiency and decrease cost

4. Invested in upgrading our software in order to enable the clinical staff to document remotely and increase their documentation efficiency and quality

5. Documented all agency processes in detail 6. Reviewed and developed financial policies regarding

investments and billing 7. Started an e-newsletter to provide caregivers with

high quality, pertinent information

To highlight two of these:

We now also offer a Palliative Care program to assist community members who have a serious illness and require symptom management but are still seeking aggressive treatment of their illness. This differs from our Transitions program in that nursing assessments are included.

We also have started a monthly e-newsletter, called “Embrace Every Day,” to provide caregivers with trusted answers to the many questions that arise when caring for someone with a serious illness.

Our emphases for 2014 are:

Education—two-fold:1) Making sure the Orleans community knows how

Hospice can help; 2) Encouraging and facilitating advance health care

decision-making. Electronic media for cost reduction; and Planned giving—encouraging both estate and

monthly contributions.

Watch for more information about Hospice’s 2014-15 Goals in future editions of our online and print newsletters.

Hospice volunteers recognized for many roles

With the opening of the Martin-Linsin Hospice Residence in 2013, we had a great need for volunteers, and ours rose to the occasion. Here are the folks acknowledged at our luncheon:

Newsletter volunteers – a dedicated group, headed by Mary Marek.

Office volunteers, who do lots of clerical work: Carol Bellack, Gail Fischer, Cheryl Mart, Florence Surdi.

Two retired nurses who clean and sanitize our medical equipment: Cheryl Denson and Alice Casson.

Laura Marek, who expertly hand-paints our golf sponsor signs.

Bob Stirk, a priceless volunteer who participates in all of our events.

Butch and Evana Daniels, who join with Bob Stirk to make selling 2,000 bouquets in a few days look easy.

Direct care volunteers (too many to list here, 45+ of them), the heart and soul of Hospice, who selflessly give their time to provide respite care.

Schedulers for the Martin-Linsin Residence, which monthly requires 420 volunteer hours – ergo, this keen team of coordinators: Cheryl Mart, Mary Anne Tillman, Loretta Tomasino, Chris Burr & Ginny Byers.

Janice Heideman, our volunteer hairdresser to Martin-Linsin patients.

Martin-Linsin meal preparers, many who have gone “above and beyond”: Don Algeo, Jean Shervin, Ann McElwee, Joanie Kent, Dolores Fischer, Ceil Feldman, Betty Kenyon, Catherine Moore, Loretta Tomasino, Mary Ann Tillman, Gail Foss, Chris Burr, Carol Lewis, Judy Cox, Kay Walter, Gail Foss, and Sylvia Goodstine.

Thank you to all of our volunteers!
