Enjoy Iceland by staying at some of the 34 HI Hostels in Iceland. Each HI Hostel offers unbeatable surroundings and hospitality.

Here you find a few travels tips that might come in handy when travelling in Iceland:

• There are many ways to be a sustainable traveller. The most

important thing is always to be conscious about sustainability.

Here are a few tips; respect nature, use walking/ hiking paths,

don´t take flowers or stones away with you, recycle, pick up

trash, shop locally, walk and/or bicycle when possible and

finally; slow down and enjoy!

• The water you buy in plastic bottles is exactly the same spring

water as you drink from the tab. There is no need to buy

water in Iceland. So, we encourage you to reduce your plastic

usage and drink spring-tap water. Icelandic hot water is often

of geothermal origin and sometimes it smells of sulphur. It is

however completely harmless unless it is too hot. Take great

care as the hot water can reach 80°C from the tab.

• Take an informative travel guide, an accurate and detailed

map of Iceland, as well as a GPS or use your tablet/smart

phone for GPS/Google Maps. If you use a smartphone or

a tablet, an Icelandic mobile sim card can be purchased to

access Iceland’s 3G network.

• The weather in Iceland is unpredictable; check weather

forecasts especially from autumn until spring as road

conditions can become threatening at short notice. Pack

according to changeable weather conditions. Take care while

driving and remember that all “F” marked roads are only

accessible for cars with 4WD. In Iceland, the maximum speed

limit is 90 km/hour and speeding tickets fines are high. Note

that off road driving is strictly forbidden; also in places with

little or no vegetation.

• The most common way to enjoy Iceland is by driving between

places. We would however like to underline that bicycling

and using public transport is also a feasible and an accessible

option. It is also possible to explore areas with a rental bike in

many places.

Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, and the Reykjanes peninsula

close to the city, have a lot to offer. The often barren, bleak

landscape of Reykjanes gives travellers a taste of the magnificent

nature that awaits them during their stay in Iceland.

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge comes ashore here with its diversity of

volcanic and geothermal activity.

People are often impressed that such a small city like Reykjavík

has so much to offer in the way of culture, arts, nature and

activities. Whether you’re seeking the bustling energy of

a cosmopolitan city, the thundering thermal energy in the

ground beneath your feet, or the quiet green serenity of the

surrounding landscapes, Reykjavík provides a unique experience

for all who visit.

WestIceland

In West Iceland, the beauty and variety of Icelandic nature is

everywhere to be seen. Magnificent views over mountains

and glaciers, fertile regions, colourful birdlife, abundant

rivers and lakes, fjords and bays, along with gushing

geothermal activity. Natural resources are all around.

West Iceland is however more than magnificent nature.

Land and history form an unbroken whole as the scene of

the Icelandic sagas come to life. This part of the country

is also rich in folklore and tales of adventure. The literary

heritage comes to life in many places in the west of Iceland,

in various exhibitions and museums where tales of people,

places and a variety of nature beings are being told.

In an ongoing effort through HI Iceland’s Mission – to support sustainable and responsible tourism as scenes from the Icelandic sagas spring to life – it gives us pleasure to offer travellers the highest standards in budget accommodation. HI Iceland Hostels are inspirational social places where we strive to meet and exceed our guests’ expectations by providing comforta-ble facilities, unique services, and a memorable experience based on sustainable strategies, policies, and daily practices.

HI Iceland’s Quality & Sustainability standards will ensure you a safe, clean, and comfortable stay, as well as a good level of services and facilities in all Icelandic HI Hostels.

HI Iceland is committed to support sustainable tourism and responsible travelling in Iceland

We choose to contribute towards a style of travelling that increases people’s knowledge of their environment, concern for nature, and respect for the cultural values of cities and towns in all parts of the world.

We kindly ask our guests to take part in the sustainable practices at the hostels as well as when travelling in our fragile Icelandic nature. Check out our “green travel tips” on www.hostel.is.

We highly value your opinion and we kindly ask you to leave your feedback on the special comment cards available at each hostel, on online platforms, or just send us an email at [email protected].

East Iceland

East Iceland is possibly Iceland’s best kept secret. An

enchanting region characterised by deep and narrow fjords,

vegetation, and widespread forestry, as well as beautiful

mountains and highlands. Anyone who likes hiking, outdoor

adventures, or simply filling their lungs with unbelievably

fresh air will love a visit to the area. The area offers all of

Iceland’s attractive aspects: culture, a flourishing society,

opportunities for entertainment and outdoor recreation,

picturesque nature in all directions, and beautiful sights.

In the summer months, the east of Iceland becomes a

creative hub for artists and young people from around

Iceland and abroad, while the season of autumn brings its

marvellous colours, not forgetting winter which has its own

charm as seasonal sports take over,; the northern lights

dance in the cold sky, and darkness itself provides inspiration

and spiritual uplifting.

SouthIceland

Everything that makes Iceland interesting to visit can be

found in South Iceland all year around. The South has some

of the country’s most diverse nature. It is therefore quite

difficult to describe this part of the country in few words since

the landscape covers; glaciers, volcanoes, volcanic islands,

geothermal areas, glacial rivers, black sands, lava fields, vast

meadows, marshes, farmlands, lakes of all sorts, untouched

highlands, and long black beaches. To name a few.

Rich in history and culture, events from the sagas are

remembered in many ways along the coast and numerous

museums in the area celebrate Icelandic customs and

heritage. With much of the country’s agricultural products

coming from the area, the South is also a fine testimony to

Icelandic restaurant culture.

Did you know that HI Hostels are called “Farfugla-heimili” in Icelandic which means “Home of migratory birds”. Isn´t that just beautiful?

Our HI Hostels are truly your home while you are travelling in Iceland. All of them provide private rooms, dorm beds and fully equipped guest kitchens where guests can prepare their own meals. The common area and the kitchen is the heart of every hostel where people meet, exchange travel experiences, slow down and enjoy.

HI Iceland offers 34 HI Hostels located in Reykjavik and around Iceland. Our hostels vary from a fun filled event hostel in the city to a super serene turf-house hostel on a green hill and everything in between. All of them offer local activities that keep you busy; ranging from hiking, visits to museums, seal and bird watching, horse riding and a lot more. Sometimes, just being out there in the beautiful landscape of our hostels is enough; enjoying life with a view over valleys, mountains, fjords or villages.

HI Iceland is a non-profit membership organisation and a member of Hostelling International (HI), a worldwide network of over 4000 hostels. We are at the forefront of sustainable tourism in Iceland and have been for a long time. The focus of our work is clearly stated in the organisation’s mission: To support sustainable and responsible tourism as well as cultural diversity.

HI Iceland assists with planning a trip, booking the hostels, and offers tailor made car rental packages. On our website www.hostel.is you find detailed information about our services such as tours categorised according to different activities. Everyone should be able to find something to their liking.
