ALL JAZZ MUSICIANS HAVEheroes. In this Winning Spins, we pres-

ent albums from two trombonists payingtribute to theirs—both trumpeters. SteveTurre honors Woody Shaw, with whom heplayed for most of a decade, by re-creatingthe format of Shaw's quintet and applyinglessons he learned from him about, hesays, "reaching for stuff." Wycliffe Gordon,a generation younger than Turre, cele-brates his idol from a much earlier time, playing and singing pieces by or associatedwith Louis Armstrong.

Woody's Delight, Steve Turre(HighNote), features Shaw's unusualfrontline format of trumpet and trombone, which Turre uses to anchor a kaleidoscop-ic musical journey through a personal his-tory of swing, blues, ballads, Brazilian andAfro-Latin styles, enlisting five trumpetersalong the way: Jon Faddis, Wallace Roney,Claudio Roditi, Chocolate Armenteros andFreddie Hendrix. All but one of the ninetracks, a samba by Roditi, are Turre origi-nals.

The title tune, in G-minor, a key favoredby the late Shaw, becomes a fast blues forscintillating solos from Turre, Faddis, pianist Xavier Davis and drummer DionParson. Bassist Buster Williams solos, with his trademark stretched notes, onthis quintet's second outing, "Somethingfor Sweets," an affectionate tribute to theswing trumpeter Harry Edison. The hornsplay in Sweets' oft-favored muted style andFaddis quotes one of Edison's famous licks.

Roney takes over for two tracks. One amemorable ballad, "In Retrospect," show-cases a Harmon-muted trumpet à la MilesDavis. The other, "Luna," exhibits the wideharmonic intervals Shaw loved.

Duduka Da Fonseca and Turre engagein a decidedly tropical birambeau andshells duet to introduce Roditi's samba"Annette's For Sure," which then prancesthrough high-spirited solos from the com-poser's trumpet, trombone and LuisPerdomo's piano. On "Adios Mi Amigo,"Turre's threnody for pianist Hilton Ruis, who died under suspicious circumstancesin 206, he performs a moving plunger-muted trombone lamentation.

"Manny's Mambo," for the late MannyOquendo, leader of Conjunto Libre, whereTurre says he learned to play in clavéphrasing, has Armenteros, 83, and a trioof all-star Afro-Latin percussionists. Thelast two tracks feature Turre's workingquintet with impressively soulful Hendrix

on a waltzing, modal "For Woody," and"Brother Bob," a bluesy, heartbeat groovetune with vocally singing solos from thehorns.

Hello Pops! A Tribute to LouisArmstrong, Wycliffe Gordon (Blues Back),is Gordon's exuberant homage to jazz'sgreat founding father, imbued with thebrio and joie de vivre of his hero. LikeSatchmo, Gordon is an ebullient performerand virtuoso musician. Here he plays notonly trombone but, for much of the album, trumpet with his own hybrid trumpet-trombone mouthpiece. He also plays tubaand sings in a fetching style right out ofthe Armstrong vocal tradition. He's partic-ularly adept at scatting in a delightfullyuninhibited, free-wheeling way: just hearthe way he channels Armstrong's verbal hijinks, not to mention his brash trumpetattack, on the Hot Five classic "KeyholeBlues." Gordon doesn't lay on theArmstrong inflections so thick as tobecome parody, and he delivers the moreserious lyrics of "If" and "Black and Blue,"with winning panache. He even employsthe two women who are his brass sectionon some tracks, trumpeter Bria Skonbergand trombonist Emily Asher, as a hip "girlsinger" chorus on a rousing "Basin StreetBlues" that would be right at home in themiddle of Mardi Gras.

While Gordon's trumpet playing isspare and muscular, in true Armstrongfashion, his trombone solos, like the tourde force coda on "Basin Street Blues," areheady with extravagant—but never self-serving—technique, from slides, splats andgurgly smears to shimmering high notesand wondrous multi-phonics. However, histrombone style also can be emotionallydirect, as on "I Cover the Waterfront," aduet with pianist Aaron Diehl. SingerNancy Harms is a welcome presence, duet-ing with Gordon on two tracks; and AnatCohen's clarinet adds a New Orleans fla-vor. Thanks to multi-tracking, the center-piece of the album is all Gordon: a tria-logue between his trumpet, trombone andtuba on his own catchy "Meatball 1, 2, 3."It must be heard to be believed.

Steve Turre and his quintet are atSmoke April 27 and 28 for a release cel-ebration of the new CD. WycliffeGordon's Quintet brings Hello Pops! to aconcert presented by the Sidney BechetSociety at the Kaye Playhouse at HunterCollege on April 16.

BOSSABRASILBIRDLAND / APRIL 24-28Brazilian keyboardist, vocalist and composer Marcos Valle has showcased his variedtalents on recordings of artists ranging from Sarah Vaughan to Diana Krall, and fromJay-Z to Sergio Mendes. Valle's rich blend of bossa nova and pop will be on display thismonth as his ensemble Bossabrasil—featuring Patricia Alvi, vocals; Sergio Brandao, bass; Renato Calmon, drums; Jesse Sadoc, trumpet; and Jorge Continentino, reeds—returns to Birdland in a concert celebrating "50 Years of 'Girl from Ipanema' andAstrud Gilberto." This superb ensemble will be joined by Paula Morelenbaum, abreathtakingly sensitive vocalist whose sultry voice can be heard on several of AntonioCarlos Jobim's recordings. For fans of the genre, this concert will offer a modern-dayDream Team of bossa nova. SH

JIM HALLBLUE NOTE / APRIL 17-22In recent years, Jim Hall, who turned 80 this winter, has expanded his horizons, com-posing for orchestras and choral groups. However, his place in jazz as a melodic, lacon-ic master of electric guitar and as one of the music's stellar collaborators remains para-mount. In the 1960s Hall provided the spare contrast to the effusive tenor sax of SonnyRollins' quartet as easily as he complemented the lyricism of trumpeter Art Farmer inhis band. His duo dates and albums with Bill Evans, Paul Desmond, Ron Carter andGeoffrey Keezer are triumphs of the form. His trio at this gig with Scott Colley, bass, and drummer Joey Baron will be joined by special guest Julian Lage, a guitarist morethan 50 years younger than Hall. GK

JOSHUA REDMAN TRIOVILLAGE VANGUARD / APRIL 17-22Just five months after graduating with honors in Social Studies from Harvard in 1991,Joshua Redman won the prestigious Thelonious Monk competition. The young saxo-phonist with a fashion model's face was on his way to becoming a jazz star. His firstalbum was nominated for a Grammy; his second release featured Pat Metheny, CharlieHaden and Billy Higgins. Now, more than 20 years later, this son of legendary saxmanDewey Redman has become a solid bandleader and recording artist with a variety ofjazz styles from hard bop to electric groove to long-form compositions. This month hewill perform with a piano-less trio—something he started exploring in 2007—withbassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. YE

TED ROSENTHALDICAPO OPERA THEATER / APRIL 1Pianist Ted Rosenthal has great skills, a super imagination and keen sense of humor. He digs deep to re-imagine and rearrange standard tunes with fresh harmonies andrhythms. He calls the process "deranging" them. This Swing into Spring concert is partof the Jazz at Dicapo series, for which he is artistic director. Rosenthal will exploreswing standards and some originals with reed player Ken Peplowski, cornetist WarrenVaché, bassist/singer Nicki Parrott and drummer Alvester Garnett. Rosenthal's firstsignificant exposure came in 1988 when he won the second annual Thelonious MonkInternational Jazz Piano Competition. He gained even more recognition during hisearly 1990s residency in Gerry Mulligan's quartet. Expect a bit of levity. Rosenthalpromises some humor and surprises for the April Fool's Day crowd. KF

ERI YAMAMOTO TRIOCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / APRIL 10Musicians who play together over a long period often develop a melodic language oftheir own. That's the case with pianist Eri Yamamoto, bassist David Ambrosio anddrummer Ikuo Takeuchi, who have had the rare experience of gigging three eveningsa week at Arthur's Tavern for nearly this entire century. You can hear the easy butnever facile communication on Yamamoto's new CD, The Next Page (AUM). Thepianist's 11 compositions are inspired by quietly profound moments in her daily life, and they fit the band like the proverbial glove. In spite of the high comfort level,Yamamoto has no investment in the mundane: The music keeps growing, she says, andthe CD gets its name from her anticipation of "turning the page to a new chapter of ouradventure together." KATE MCGARRYJAZZ STANDARD / APRIL 18A consistently eclectic and swinging vocalist, Kate McGarry has amassed a dizzyinglyvast personal songbook that spans the musical gamut from Irvin Berlin to The Cars.Throughout her career, she has honed a distinct and versatile contralto that shows offbroad influences—not only of jazz singers like Betty Carter and Sheila Jordan, but alsoof pop luminaries including Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell—without being derivative ofanyone. On this gig, McGarry, as well as guitarist Keith Ganz, organist Gary Versace, and drummer Clarence Penn, will celebrate the release of her latest album Girl Talk.Recorded for Palmetto Records, this CD pays tribute to trailblazing vocalists of jazz'shistory by covering time-honored classics while leaving McGarry's own indelible stampon each piece. SH

HERLIN RILEYDIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / APRIL 10-15A New Orleans native who is a master of the syncopation and polyrhythms of that city'ssecond line beats, drummer Herlin Riley can also bring a gospel flavor as a tambourinevirtuoso. While best known for his long association with fellow Crescent City scionWynton Marsalis, which began in the late 1980s, Riley's seminal gig was with AhmadJamal in the mid-1980s. He has been active mostly as a sideman in the last decade, butmade two outstanding small group albums for Criss Cross which fully display his ver-satility and swing. At Dizzy's, Riley will be leading his quartet with Todd Williams, tenorsax; Reginald Veal, bass; and Peter Martin, piano; plus Wycliffe Gordon (10-11) andWess Anderson (15). GK

DONALD HARRISONSYMPHONY SPACE / APRIL 27An alumnus of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, saxophonist Donald Harrison is renownedfor his self-described "nouveau swing," a fusion of straight-ahead jazz with second-linerhythms, R&B, and even hip hop. A versatile artist equally at home in hard bop andsmooth jazz settings, Harrison also upholds the rich traditions of New Orleans, both byserving as the Big Chief of Congo Square alongside his ensemble Congo Nation, and byappearing in and providing music for the critically acclaimed HBO show Treme.Harrison will bring his innovative talents and broad vision to Symphony Space, wherehe will be joined by like-minded musical omnivores: trumpeter Christian Scott, pianistZaccai Curtis, guitarist Detroit Brooks, bassist Max Moran and drummer Joe Dyson. SH

MARIANNE SOLIVANKITANO / APRIL 11Singer Marianne Solivan, sweetly candid, delves beneath the familiar. A delicatelyintent sculptress, she reshapes but never distorts. Bending notes, breathing verbalcadences into new, convincing speech, Solivan creates powerful, rhythmic music. Withpianist Michael Kanan and other kindred spirits, she honors yet illuminates jazz stan-dards. On her debut CD, Prisoner of Love, she creates a new verse for the title song andshe is accompanied by Christian McBride, Peter Bernstein, Xavier Davis and JeremyPelt. Solivan's art is emotive but not melodramatic, strong yet never harsh. What elsewould we expect from someone influenced early on by Ella Fitzgerald, Dominique Eade,Nina Simone, and Betty Carter? Her group at the Kitano will comprise pianist JebPatton, bassist Boris Koslov and drummer Darrell Green. MS

DMITRY BAEVSKYSMOKE / APRIL 18 AND SMALLS / APRIL 22Russian-born alto saxophonist Dmitry Baevsky is making inroads to becoming a premierperformer on his instrument. On his third CDs as a leader, The Composers on SharpNine, you can clearly hear a distinction with a difference, illustrating his personal voiceand solid chops. Baevsky displays a purposed kind of earthy soul that reflects his her-itage. In an understated way, Baevsky is defining his sound on his own terms, movingaway from obvious influences. For now, the saxophonist and his bands are concentratingon re-inventing the lesser-known music of modernist American jazz composers likeHorace Silver, Cedar Walton, Gigi Gryce, Herbie Hancock, Duke Pearson, Wayne Shorterand Ornette Coleman. His CD release party at Smoke will feature David Hazeltine (p),John Webber (b) and Jason Brown (dr), who back him on The Composers, while his bandat Smalls will include Jeb Patton (p) David Wong (b) and Joe Strasser (dr). NEW JERSEY JAZZBy Sheila Anderson, Author/Announcer, WBGO, 88.3fm

Asher photo by Joanne Levey, Grosz by Colin Hall, Cherry by Lena Adasheva

ED CHERRYMAKEDA / APRIL 19Ed Cherry is a well-rounded guitarist whose soulful, funky, yet lyrical approach isnever too loud or bombastic. An underrated musician, Cherry is finally gettingsome deserved recognition with two recordings. He worked and recorded with DizzyGillespie from 1978 until just before his death in 1993, then later with PaquitoD'Rivera, Henry Threadgill's "Very, Very Circus," and Roy Hargrove's "Crisol"Latin jazz band. Between his steady gig with vocalist Paula West and variousteaching positions, he continues to lead his groups and to record. Cherry has twoprojects on Posi-Tone Records. One, titled Golden Child, features organist JaredGold. The other, as yet untitled, is a group with organist Pat Bianchi and drummerByron Landham who will be with Cherry at Makeda.

VITALI IMERELITRUMPETS / APRIL 7As a child growing up in Kutaisi, Georgia, then part of the Soviet Union, VitaliImereli heard little or no jazz. However, his musical talents were recognized early, and he was sent to classical music school at the tender age of five. He graduated asa violinist from the National Academy of Georgia and then taught for six years. Buthis move to Finland opened up his world: there he became a disciple of StephaneGrappelli, and started playing Gypsy jazz. In 1996 he recorded a tribute CD to themaestro. A versatile, virtuosic violinist, comfortable in any setting, Imereli hasawesome post bop chops. Internationally renowned as an expert soloist who playswith breathtaking precision at lightning speed, he can be heard on festivalsthroughout Russia and Europe.

MARTY GROSZBICKFORD THEATRE / APRIL 16Considered to be the foremost jazz rhythm guitarist who plays without an amplifi-er, Marty Grosz is also known as a talented singer and comedian. For more than 40years, Grosz has delighted crowds by playing American folk, blues and Tin PanAlley tunes with a jazz inflection. Born in Berlin in 1930, he moved to the UnitedStates with his parents when he was three. His musical journey began by listeningto the live programs on the radio; by age eight Grosz was playing the ukulele. Hepromptly switched to guitar when he heard Bernard Allison's shuffle-beat behindRoy Eldridge's trumpet. Grosz will be joined by Dan Tobias on cornet and Ed Wiseon bass. The evening should prove to be pure magic.

EMILY ASHEROCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE / APRIL 18A rising star with a winning personality, Emily Asher is a trombonist and vocalistwho leaves her audiences energized, wanting to hear more. People who saw her atthe New Jersey Jazz Society's JazzFest said she and her band, Garden Party, stopped people in their tracks. Their sound, from the early swing era, is heavilyinfluenced by the legendary Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven bands. Tworegular members, Bria Skonberg, trumpet and vocals; and Dan Levinson, reeds;along with guitarist/banjoist Nick Russo and bassist Sean Cronin, are on the OCCdate. A Seattle native, Asher is relatively new to the east coast. But she has beenkeeping good company: she can be heard on Wycliffe Gordon's recent release, HelloPops! Without a doubt, Asher is here to stay.

THE WORLD WASN'T EXACTLYclamoring for a new big band in 1973.

But pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi was begin-ning to think of music that would sound fardifferent from what her small ensemblecould produce. Armed with a handful ofcharts and encouragement from her hus-band, saxophonist Lew Tabackin, shebegan gathering studio musicians forrehearsals in a Los Angeles union hall.

What came to life at those weeklyWednesday morning sessions wasn't likeyour grandparents' big band. From thestart, the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackinbig band—known as the Toshiko AkiyoshiJazz Orchestra after the couple moved toNew York in 1982—was a cutting-edgeaggregation with complex arrangements ofcompositions that incorporated social com-mentary and cultural and political touch-stones.

The group released its first record with-in a year of its formation: Kogun, musicinspired by the life of a Japanese soldierwho had lived in the jungle for decadesafter World War II, not realizing the warwas over. Their 1976 album, Insights, con-tained the "Minamata" suite, sparked bythe environmental disaster in theJapanese city of Minamata, where thou-sands of people suffered from mercury poi-soning caused by industrial waste.Akiyoshi has often employed Asian instru-ments in her orchestrations, including2003's "Hiroshima Rising from the Abyss,"which commemorates the city's destructionby the atomic bomb, while conveying amessage of hope.

Regardless of the instrumentation, topicor inspiration, all of her compositions comefrom the same base. "The foundationshould always be bebop," Akiyoshi says. She compares her composing to building ahouse. "You have to have a solid founda-tion; bebop is my solid foundation. I put dif-ferent things on top, my own culture, or aclassical music format. But it's importantto have that foundation."

Akiyoshi describes herself as the lastold jazz romanticist. "Bebop is probably thelast music where you can feel and hear theconnection from the old New Orleansmusic," she says. "After bebop, that was cut

off. There's more European influence now."Over the past decade, few audiences

have had the chance to hear Akiyoshi'sorchestra. After a 30-year run, including aseven-year weekly residency at Birdland, she called it quits in 2003. Akiyoshi dis-banded the group to focus her energy andattention on practicing piano.

"I haven't missed the big band," shesays. "There's so much I have to perfect inmyself, in my playing; I'm not even close. Ihave to keep trying, and that keeps mebusy."

Akiyoshi was born in Manchuria, China,in 1929 and she and her family relocated toJapan after World War II. The pianistalways wanted to play in the land of herbirth, so she seized the opportunity to gether New York orchestra back together forseveral concerts in China in 2010.

In May 2011, the Akiyoshi-Tabackinwest coast band reconvened for the firsttime in several decades for a performanceat the Los Angeles Big Band Festival. "Itwas such a present for me, a very wonder-ful, heart-warming experience. They allcame and we had such a good time,"Akiyoshi says. "It's 40 years later. We allgot old!"

New York fans will get a chance to hearthe reunited east coast ensemble at Jazz atLincoln Center's Rose Theater. The concertis almost certain to start with "Long YellowRoad," which Tabackin calls Akiyoshi's "ATrain." More than one fan has told her, "IfI don't hear that, I don't think I've heardyou." Also likely to be on the program is theseasonally appropriate "Pollination," fromthe group's 1996 recording, Four Seasonsof Morita Village.

A pair of commissions will round out theprogram: one from Lincoln Center, whichincludes a taiko drummer from Japan; anda Monterey Jazz Festival-commissionedtribute to Duke Ellington. Akiyoshi basedthe piece on Ellington's landmark composi-tion "Black and Tan Fantasy." "My versionis an interesting way to play a very oldtune," Akiyoshi says. "It was written in1927, before I was born. My orchestrationis very different."

The pianist has added breathing exer-cises to her schedule in preparation for herRose Hall gig. After not performing forthree months, Akiyoshi noticed she gotshort of breath on stage. "I practice athome every day, but it's different in frontof an audience. I felt like I was using up allof my oxygen," she says. "People think it'sjust woodwind players, but a pianist has tobreathe right, too. There is always some-thing new to discover, and now I have toexercise my breathing."

The Toshiko Akiyoshi JazzOrchestra will perform at Jazz atLincoln Center on April 13 and 14 on adouble bill with Vince Giordano'sNighthawks.

31Fortune photo by Vincent Isola

PROUDLY FOLLOWING IN THE giant footsteps of his peers and idols,

Sonny Fortune continues to be a force inthe world of modern and progressive main-stream jazz. He remains one of the mainmen in the Philadelphia to New York Cityconnection that shaped music from the1960s onward.

Born in Philadelphia in the spring of1939, Fortunes' first love was jazz. "At thattime, there were so many jazz musicians indifferent sections in town," he recalls."There was North Philly, where I wasraised, the West Philly crowd with BobbyTimmons and McCoy Tyner, the SouthPhilly crowd with the Heath brothers andMickey Roker. There were cats all over thetown, and John Coltrane in North Philly. And these guys were in direct contact withthe cats in New York."

Fortune moved to NYC in 1967, and hewas soon featured prominently with ElvinJones' band upon recommendation andurging by a man nicknamed 'Trane. Thespirit and specter of Coltrane hold specialsignificance for Fortune. "For me, personal-ly, he goes beyond music. I used to see himalmost every time he came to Philadelphia.I spoke to him a number of times; onlyplayed with him once," Fortune says. "Hegave me my send-off to New York. Hewished me well and thought I would dofine, and said if I ever got the opportunityto play with Elvin, take it. I was workingwith Elvin the night Coltrane died.

"Musically, he gave me a direction fromthe standpoint of not necessarily emulatinghim as much as trying to find yourself. Thething that really fascinated me about thisguy was that he just seemed to havealways felt the need to go forward, strivingto transform himself," Fortune explains."He's one of the few musicians you can lis-ten to and hear a different guy over theyears. He transcended himself more thanany person I know of playing this music, ora whole lot of other things, for that matter. What hit me the hardest was his pursuit;that is how I see myself, I'm definitely inpursuit of music."

Stints in the late 1960s with MongoSantamaria and with his fellowPhiladelphian McCoy Tyner during theearly seventies honed his voice on the sax-ophones. Fortune then recorded and touredwith Buddy Rich, documented on a fewalbums for the Groove Merchant label.

Fortune was in a powerhouse version ofthe post-Bitches Brew Miles Davis ensem-ble from 1974 to 1975 and was givenacclaim for his wailing style with Miles."To work with Miles was a dream cometrue, and it wasn't difficult," he says. "Iplayed alto, soprano and flute. I didn't playone sax more than the other, though Ialways favored my alto."

After his time with Miles, Fortuneemerged as a leader, recording his debut,Long Before Our Mothers Cried (StrataEast), followed by the seminal fusion ses-sions Awakening and Waves of Dreams(A&M Horizon) as well as the still power-ful and pivotal Serengeti Minstrel(Atlantic Records). Fortune is sensitiveabout the critique given these more com-mercial albums but, over time, when youlisten again, they are valid extensions fromhis experience with Davis.

A paucity of recent recordings mightlead people to think that Fortune has beenless active; but this is far from the truth. He is preparing to continue his pursuit tomake his presence better known, with eastcoast dates featuring longtime colleagues. His regular group is with drummer SteveJohns and pianist Michael Cochran but theall-star band he'll front in TriBeCa consistsof drummer Billy Hart, trumpeter LouSoloff, trombonist Robin Eubanks, bassistBuster Williams and pianist GeorgeCables.

"They're all friends of mine. We'verecorded in the past, and I feel good thatwe are coming together, playing composi-tions of mine that I haven't performed inyears," the saxophonist says.

Fortune sees his adopted hometown asthe best place for a musician to be. "In mytravels, there's more going on here thananywhere else. It certainly has changedfrom when I first arrived, but it's still theplace where there are a lot of musiciansusing thought in the pursuit of music."

The Sonny Fortune Quintet playsJack Kleinsinger's Highlights In Jazzseries on April 12 at the TriBeCaPerforming Art Center.

A hop, skip, and a plane ridePianist Myra Melford and bassist MarkDresser played together only occasionallywhen they just had to cross Prospect Parkto meet. "But now that we live 500 milesapart in California, we play together moreoften than we ever did as neighbors,"Melford says. The former Brooklyn-ites aretwo-thirds of Trio M (New York-baseddrummer Matt Wilson is the third "M" inthe leaderless cooperative). Not knowingmany musicians when they moved toCalifornia was an early motivator for theirpartnership. But the main appeal, Melfordsays, "is we're both experimental but loveto groove." Their first outing in 2006 wentso well that the three decided to get seri-ous. And they have. They recently releaseda second recording, The Guest House(Enja). Besides Trio M, Melford makes fre-quent appearances as a leader, sidewomanor collaborator with musicians such asJenny Scheinman, Allison Miller, HenryThreadgill and Marty Ehrlich. Each rolecalls for distinct approaches to the music."They all show different aspects of myvocabulary as a pianist, from lovinggrooves, to playing the changes andstraight-ahead tunes, to a very abstractand improvisational approach." Melfordgrew up in a house designed by FrankLloyd Wright, which she feels has inspiredher creativity, especially in her work withdancers or more unusual suspects, such asan architect or a chef. "That's always achallenge: how do I translate? How do Icreate a metaphor for a work of art inanother medium?" Catch Trio M at Kitanoon April 7.

No more bluesSinger Carol Fredette enjoys all kinds oftunes, but expect her to stick with theupbeat ones for her birthday gig atBirdland. "I'm not going to want to sing sadsongs on my birthday," she says. "What agreat way to mark the day, having fun withuplifting, positive material. There's noth-ing I love to do more. When I'm into the

music and lyrics, I'm living it. There isnothing else." Teaching is a close second onFredette's list of passions. "Passing onwhat I know is like passing on part ofmyself," she says. "I did some singing atthe tail end of the big band era, and oppor-tunities like that don't exist anymore. What I learned from singing with thosebands makes up so much of the swing feel-ing. I believe really good singers are goodactors. I have a lot to say from my own life."However, she tells her students they haveto know themselves. "You can't sing some-one else's truth." Help Fredette blow outher birthday candles at Birdland on April15, and keep an ear out for a new recordingfrom her later this year.

Learn, lady, learnPatricia Adams started singing at openmikes 20 years ago, with the goal of becom-ing the best singer in the room. She noticedthat some of the regulars sounded very pol-ished. "And then there was the rest of us,"she recalls. "Music education was the bigdifferentiator. I realized I had to go back toschool to achieve my singing goals." Adamsenrolled at New England Conservatory tostudy harmony, theory and more. She'sbeen out of the ivory tower for a while now,and has left the open mikes behind; butshe's still learning. "Ten years ago, I wasjust trying to get the sound out right. NowI'm thinking of how I can change a phrase, editing my ideas. I'm very much involvedin the moment. It's great working withsomeone like pianist Ray Santisi. He's beenteaching me without me even realizing I'mbeing taught." Adams sings at Heritage

The Insanity HoaxPsychologist, musician and jazz critic Dr.Judith Schlesinger has contributed to pub-lications ranging from the Baltimore Sun toAllAboutJazz.com on topics including musi-cal analysis, psychology and education. Aprobing intellectual, and engrossingauthor, Schlesinger displays her talents in her recently released book: TheInsanity Hoax: Exposing the Myth of theMad Genius. "The 'mad genius' nonsensehad been bugging me since I first noticedthose stories," notes Schlesinger. "It always seemed unrealistic and unfair toexpect that everybody with great talent isrequired to suffer for it. When I became apsychologist and realized how sloppy andunchallenged the research was, I decided to blow the whistle." Indeed, her pioneer-ring efforts launch direct attacks on ourentrenched tendencies to link creativegenius with psychological disorders. In 2010, alto saxophonist Brian Girley, having just completed his masters atUniversity of North Texas in Denton, tooka decidedly courageous next step in his lifeand career: one-way ticket in hand, he setout to make New York City his new home.

On April 19, Girley will make his debutas a leader at The Jazz Gallery. On hand forthe evening will be his quintet, which fea-tures Gilad Hekselman, Julian Shore, LindaOh and Ross Pedersen. Having recorded hisfirst CD under his name, Faith, in 2011 withthe same personnel, the majority of thetunes will be original works from the album.Girley's compositional style takes from theuplifting characteristics of church music, but it's decidedly modern. Intricate, yetsingable melodies are often found pairedbetween saxophone and guitar, supportedby myriad contrasting grooves from therhythm section, ranging from hip-hop toburning up-tempo swing. The band alsomight play a few new compositions showcas-ing Girley's abilities on flute.

The predominant theme of Faith is that

it takes faith to be an artist and to pursuedoing what you love despite the obstaclesthat inevitably arise. "It is your responsi-bility to share your voice," Girley says. "Itisn't your responsibility to share someoneelse's voice, but to be grateful for the onethat you were given." From playing in achurch in Morningside Heights, to perform-ing in clubs in the city with his impressivequintet, Girley cer-tainly is holdinghimself responsiblefor sharing hisunique voice.

After his debutat The Jazz Galley,Girley will tourwith his quintet inthe coming yearand plans to recordhis second album.Show your faith inGirley, and get outto the Jazz Gallerythis month.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

In the early 1950s, when Jimmy Wizner was the pianist with Charlie Ventura's band play-ing a jazz club in Toronto, a couple at a table invited him and drummer Chick Keeney to theirtable during a break. They sat down, and the man said, "That was great! What would youlike to drink?" Since neither of them drank, Jimmy ordered a ginger ale and Chick asked fora coke. Then the man took out a pack of cigarettes and offered them to the musicians. Butneither of them smoked, so they said, "No, thanks." The guy grew angry, and said, "On sec-ond thought, I don't think I want you guys at my table!" Jimmy and Chick quickly got up andleft, sorry to have disillusioned the man about jazz musicians.

Jamey Abersold gets orders for all sorts of musical publications and supplies, but he wasa little taken aback by a phone call he got from someone who wanted a metronome thatwould click on only two and four.
