THE TERM "JAZZ SINGER" CAN APPLYto myriad approaches to the voice as instru-
ment, as well as to a wide variety of styles. While the two vocalists whose albums make upthis month's Winning Spins may not seem tohave much in common, what they do share is adeep musicality and a concept of the singer as amember of a band - in short: a musician. WhileCassandra Wilson only plays a bit of synthe-sizer and bass drum (on one track each) on hernew album, she is a major shaper, as leader, ofthe music her band plays. Meanwhile,Champian Fulton leads a trio, from the piano,in a 13-track program that includes five non-vocal numbers.
Wilson's Silver Pony (Blue Note) finds hercombining music recorded on a tour of Europewith other tracks set down at a studio in NewOrleans, her present home town. Her workingband appears on ten tracks, with vocal duetpartner John Legend providing accompanimenton the eleventh. Her band is unique, a hybrid ofblues, folk, jazz and world music featuring theoften-electric (slide and whammy bar) guitar ofMarvin Sewell, bassist Reginald Veal, pianistJonathan Batiste, drummer Herlin Riley andAfrican percussionist Lekan Babalola. Thealbum is as much about the instrumental musicas it is about the vocals, which often rise up outof and recede into the music organically.
As has been her wont on albums for years,Wilson chooses an eclectic and unpredictablerange of compositions, from traditional bluesand jazz-pop songs to the Beatles and StevieWonder, adding one song, "Silver Moon," credit-ed to the band with her own lyric. That perform-ance, captured in the studio with a contributionfrom tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, is preced-ed by "A Night in Seville," an instrumental trackfrom a concert in Spain that served as inspira-tion for the song. A spare ensemble sound ani-mated by Riley's brushes shuffle percolatesswiftly behind Wilson's voice on "Lover ComeBack To Me" as she applies her deep velvet toneto the lyrics with an elastic sense of time thatplays tag with the swift tempo. A similar janglybeat powers "St. James Infirmary," Wilson'sinterpretation placing the song's narrator firmlyat the center as a proud woman.
There's a trance-like quality to the slowersongs, enhanced by Wilson's sensuously low,molasses-husky voice and incantatory timbre onWonder's "If It's Magic," the Beatles' "Blackbird"and the bossa "A Day in the Life of A Fool," withits atmospheric sighing guitars. Wilson and herband bring a fertile stateliness to the Deltablues on Charlie Patton's "Saddle Up My Pony"
and the Muddy Waters-associated "Forty Daysand Forty Nights." The duet on Legend's "Watchthe Sunrise" is a rough fit - like sandpaper andsuede - but delivered with enough passion tomesh and blend well.
On The Breeze and I (Gut String), ChampianFulton, the singer known previously for herrecorded work with the big band billed as DavidBerger and the Sultans of Swing, displays herpianistic as well as vocal talents, leading herworking trio with bassist Neal Minor and drum-mer Fukushi Tainaka. Just 25, Fulton has anenviable command of jazz piano, with a cleanprecision and bright attack reminiscent ofanother late great, pianist-singer, Nat "King"Cole, as well as a sparkling playfulness recallingErrol Garner. She swings convincingly oninstrumental versions of the title tune and"Easy to Love" and soulfully on Harold Land's"Land's End." The Garner influence can beheard in both her "Trolley Song"-feint opening to"My Heart Stood Still" and the chorded portionof her solo improvisation.
As a singer, Fulton seems more comfortableperforming with her nimble trio than with a bigband, incorporating aspects of cabaret parlandointo uptempo romps "Exactly Like You" and"Day In, Day Out," giving them a sassy edge. That edge, expressed with a roughened tone andsly insinuation on faster tempos, is sanded

BUCKY PIZZARELLI92ND STREET Y / JANUARY 8-10A master of the 7-string guitar who's played for a host of jazz and pop musicians in acareer that's spanned well over half a century, Pizzarelli will be saluted at a concertco-hosted by his son John and daughter-in-law Jessica Molaskey. Part of the Y's long-running "Lyrics and Lyricists" series, it's being billed as "Frank and Tony and Peggyand Me: Making Music with the Great Singers - Celebrating Bucky Pizzarelli's 85thBirthday." In addition to the co-hosts, vocal guests will be Darius de Haas and JudyKuhn. Although he's best known as a rhythm guitarist, the honoree is also an imagi-native soloist and lead player whose skills are amply demonstrated on his manyArbors Records CDs. In fact, some participants in those projects will be joining theonstage band. GK
ALVESTER GARNETTDIZZY'S / JANUARY 25-29Certain jazz drummers are accorded special praise for their deft, crisp brush work.Chico Hamilton, Ed Thigpen and Lewis Nash come to mind. Now add Garnett to thelist. His talents have kept him busy of late: touring with Regina Carter's ReverseThread Ensemble; gigging with Papo Vasquez, Cynthia Scott, Charnee Wade andBrad Leali; and jetting away for sideman work in St. Louis, Boston, Bern, Interlakenand Zurich. He'll have opportunities to shine closer to home as a leader this month. His Artworks Ensemble, a quartet which includes reedman Jed Levy, plays five LateNight sets at Dizzy's; his Folkworks Duo with Levy appears at Zinc Bar on Jan. 12;and he'll be part of Carter's band at Birdland on Jan. 9. PB
KURT ROSENWINKELVILLAGE VANGUARD / JANUARY 4-9Unlike some of his guitar-slinging contemporaries of the generation that's come to thefore in the new millennium, Kurt Rosenwinkel is less concerned with the electric thanthe musical aspects of the amplified guitar. His is an incredibly fertile imagination, capable of creating memorably melodic lines in solos full of unexpected, often intricateharmonic byways. Although known mostly for his singular original music,Rosenwinkel surprised the jazz listening community, and hit many critics' 2009 TopTen lists, with his Standards Trio CD, Reflections (Wommusic), an intimate recordingon which he revitalized familiar jazz tunes through his insightful interpretations. Forthis gig he'll be leading a quartet that also includes pianist Aaron Parks, bassist BenStreet and drummer Ted Poor. GK
KEVIN HAYS IRIDIUM / JANUARY 19We count a dozen CDs issued under pianist Hays' own name over the past fifteenyears, including three real corkers for the Blue Note label early on. In addition, he'sworked with Benny Golson, Bob Belden, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson, DonaldHarrison and Joshua Redman, all leaders who value outstanding keyboard support.Hays has also evinced a remarkable talent for rearranging classical pieces by the likesof Brahms, Schumman and Webern; hear the results on What Survives, releasedunder his own PinonDisc imprint. For this gig the same long-running trio (includingbassist Doug Weiss and drummer Bill Stewart) heard on his new Live At Smallsalbum will be augmented by special guest Chris Potter playing soprano and tenor. PB
JEFF “TAIN” WATTSJAZZ STANDARD / JANUARY 18-23An eruptive force capable of dominating bands with his polyrhythmic sturm unddrang drumming, Jeff "Tain" Watts celebrates his 50th birthday (1/20) in the middleof this double gig featuring a trio for two nights and then a quartet for four more.Watts first emerged as a member of Wynton Marsalis' early quintet and has morerecently been a mainstay of Branford Marsalis' Coltrane-inspired quartet. But he'salso a versatile, in-demand drummer who's played TV shows and behind a variety ofjazz and rock musicians. His trio will feature the influential saxophonist SteveColeman, along with long-time collaborator Robert Hurst on bass. His quartet willbring back Hurst, joined by the assertive pianist David Kikoski plus MarcusStrickland playing both tenor and soprano saxophones. GK

TED BROWNKITANO / JANUARY 12If tenor saxophonist Brown - who turned 84 last month - is on your horizon at all, youprobably have him filed under "cool-toned reedmen who studied and worked withLennie Tristano back in the mid-50s." (Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh are others you'dsimilarly categorize.) Brown's profile hasn't been high in recent decades. Apart fromtwo delightful Steeplechase CDs (Preservation and Shades Of Brown), there's been lit-tle of his recorded work issued in the past ten years. But to hear him breeze withLester-ish economy through "Cherokee" or "This Can't Be Love" is to experience the joyof understated swing that's suggestive in the very best sense. Backing him at Kitano:pianist Michael Kanan, bassist Murray Wall and drummer Taro Okamoto. PB
JAMES ZOLLARSMALLS / JANUARY 26For a trumpeter who is just a half-century old, James Zollar has experienced and playedin a myriad of musical styles and contexts. He's worked with blues legends Joe Turnerand Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, the trad-swing band of Jeannie and Jimmy Cheatham,Mercer Ellington's Duke Ellington Orchestra as well as such avant-garde and post-bopleaders as David Murray, Lester Bowie, Don Byron and Henry Threadgill. Zollar'ssound borrows from the rough-hewn growls of the blues and burly timbres of swing, with more than a hint of Clifford Brown's big galvanizing tone. His recent self-producedCD, Zollar System, is a keeper, but he's bringing a very different group to this gig, onefeaturing two more trumpeters and a rhythm trio. GK
BILL STEWART SMOKE / JANUARY 14 AND 15One of the most intriguing jazz albums of 2008 was drummer Bill Stewart'sIncandescence (Pirouet), notable not only for the leader's quirky takes on a variety ofgrooves in his originals, but for the instrumentation, a trio of Stewart's drum kit andtwo keyboardists: organist/accordionist Larry Goldings and pianist Kevin Hays. A mas-ter of dynamics with a precise touch and a sound more breeze and rain than storm andthunder, Stewart is one of his generation's (forty-somethings) most distinctive andmelodic drummers. The quartet he's leading at this gig is more conventional, with ChrisCheek, saxes, Hays on piano and bassist Matt Penman. But you can also hear him in atrio with organist Goldings and guitarist Peter Bernstein at Smalls, Jan. 6-8. GK
TYLER BLANTONCORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / JANUARY 16Botanic is an all-round delight, a rewarding new CD introducing a young Brooklyn-based vibraphonist who writes catchy tunes reflecting genuine harmonic intrigue, thenimprovises on them without trying to overwhelm listeners with flurries of notes. Hepossesses a decidedly lyrical touch as well. Maybe you've already caught Blanton at avenue near you: in recent weeks, he's played the Tea Lounge, Miles' Café, Bar Nextdoor, Café Steinhof and the Flute Bar. This Cornelia Street appearance in the compa-ny of saxophonist Joel Frahm, bassist Dan Loomis and drummer Jared Schonig, allpresent on the disc, is a launch party that'll hopefully draw a crowd. And get this: yourten-buck cover charge that night will also get you a copy of the album, which we justadded to our "Best-Recordings-of-2011" list. PB
POSITIVE CATASTROPHEJAZZ GALLERY / JANUARY 16"A confluence of Sun Ra and Eddie Palmieri," enthuses one writeup on this ten-mem-ber outfit's debut CD, Garabatos, Vol. 1 (Cuneiform). Much of that mad blending can betraced to the diverse backgrounds of co-leaders: cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and per-cussionist Abraham Gomez-Delgado. They wowed an appreciative crowd at Zebulon, where some of this disc was recorded, and will likely do the same here. Expect swingarrangements that suddenly dissolve into blurts, feints and jabs, strong solos from sax-ists Matt Bauder and Michael Attias, rock touches provided by guitarist PeteFitzpatrick and occasionally spacey vocals from Jen Shyu. It's all enriched by liberaldoses of sophisticated musical humor. Note that PC's 7:30 PM performance will be pre-ceded by a 3:30 PM workshop and a 5:00 PM open rehearsal. PB

DON BRADENSHANGHAI JAZZ / JANUARY 1While studying computers at Harvard University in the 1980's, saxophonistBraden, a well-known fixture in the Boston jazz scene, got serious about music.Conflicted, he decided to take a year off and moved to NYC. Within months, hefound himself touring and recording with a remarkable range of jazz greats, includ-ing Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard and Roy Haynes. A composerand arranger as well as leader, he spent four years working for the CBS sitcom"Cosby" and wrote a tune called "Little Bill." Along with performing and recording,Braden spends extensive time as an educator for Litchfield Performing Arts, theNew Jersey PAC, and the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen, Holland.Technically proficient, harmonically sophisticated and soulful, he's able to upliftaudiences while pushing the boundaries of hard bop.
RANDY SANDKEMAPLEWOOD WOMAN’S CLUB / JANUARY 2Though he's best known for playing classic jazz and swing, this trumpeter's musi-cal depth also extends, upon occasion, into more modern styles. While studying atIndiana University, he formed a band with Michael Brecker. At one period later on,Sandke actually put away his horn and focused instead on guitar. Happily, though,he eventually picked up the trumpet once again and joined Vince Giordano'sNighthawks, the first of many groups to which he's lent his brilliant brass voice. Hisown CDs on the Concord, Arbors Records, Evening Star and Nagel-Heyer labels areall worth hearing. And he's also a theorist and author, whose most recent book,"Where The Light And The Dark Folks Meet" (Scarecrow Press) was published inFebruary. His band will surely add excitement to this year's ChickenFat Ball.
DIANE MOSERTRUMPETS / JANUARY 26Originally a Midwesterner, the versatile Ms. Moser launched herself into profes-sional music at fifteen, gigging as a solo pianist and learning "on the bandstand." Alengthy stint in San Diego proved to be a turning point, in terms of professionalachievement, when she had chances to work with Charles McPherson and the pop-ular team of Jimmy and Jeanne Cheatham. During the mid-90s, after she'd relocat-ed to Montclair, and armed with considerable talents as pianist, composer andarranger, she began leading her Composers Big Band. She’s back from a one-yearhiatus - after a life-threatening illness - with a new vitality and a renewed sourceof energy. This fourteenth anniversary performance of her much-praised bandpromises to be quite a celebration, with special guests including baritone saxophon-ist and tuba player Howard Johnson plus vocalist Marcelino Feliciano among them.
STEVE TURREBETHANY BAPTIST CHURCH / JANUARY 1For the past four decades, Turre has been a leading figure in bebop and Latin cir-cles as both leader and sideman. Born to Mexican-American parents and raised inthe San Francisco Bay area, he early on absorbed the spirit of mariachi, blues andjazz. Although his principal instrument has always been the trombone, he's alsomade his mark by incorporating seashells into his music. He says that RahsaanRoland Kirk, at one time his employer, introduced him to the shells, which Turrelater discovered had been played by his ancestors. His skill with them is readilyapparent on a terrific new CD Delicious and Delightful (HighNote). The cohesivechemistry of his working band, which also includes saxophonist Billy Harper, is ajoy to hear. Steve's daughter Andromeda will also be featured during this concert.

GEORGE CABLES HAS WORN QUITE Avariety of hats since discovering jazz in high
school. The 66-year-old native New Yorker hasgained recognition as a solo pianist, composer, bandleader, collaborator and sideman to legendslike Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, WoodyShaw, Art Blakey and Art Pepper. He's evenbeen a musical muse to mystery writer MichaelConnelly, who has mentioned Cables in hisbooks and invited him to take part in a booktour. Cables played solo piano while the authorread aloud from a novel featuring DetectiveHarry Bosch.
Later this month, you can find Cables in side-man mode at Birdland, playing material writtenby Freddie Hubbard, whom he regards as anunderrated composer. The pianist gigged occa-sionally with Hubbard for several years beforejoining his band in 1971 for what turned out tobe a five-year stint. He looked up to the trum-peter, recalling him as a relaxed and supportivebandleader who was willing to play Cables' com-positions, appear on his first major recordingand recommend him to other bandleaders, including Sonny Rollins. "I was honored to playwith Freddie," notes Cables. "Music was themost important thing to him. Every night, hewas taking no prisoners; every night he wantedto play his best. He was such a virtuoso that, ifit came to his mind, it came out his horn. He washelpful to me and an inspiration to my writing."
When composing "Ebony Moonbeams" forFreddie, Cables visualized taking a south-boundcruise, and imagined how music would sounddrifting over the water from the shores of PuertoRico and South America. "I wanted to write myimpressions of that," he says. "When I approachwriting, I don't think 'that fits my fingers.' Iwrite something, then I have to learn to play it."
Cables employs nautical imagery once againwhen describing the difference between being asideman and a leader. In his example, "JoeHenderson might be the captain, but it's allhands on deck. The music is something everyonecontributes to: improvisation, solos, whateversomeone plays, how they play, how they feel - allthat effects how everyone else plays. It's alwaysa bit different."
On solo gigs or when he's the leader, "I'm thecaptain of that ship. I'm not playing to shape themusic for someone else. I'm shaping it from theget-go."
Currently, Cables is anticipating a seachange in his work.
We've all heard that when one door closes, another one opens. These days, Cables is stand-ing fast in a metaphorical hallway betweenthose two doors. He feels that he's on the cusp ofa change, but he's not sure how it will manifest

itself. "I'm going into a different phase of my life,it's pretty interesting," Cables says. "I'm chang-ing personally - and that means musically."
The change has been brought about by theloss of his partner of 28 years, Helen Wray, whodied in November after a year-long bout withpancreatic cancer. Wray continues to be aninspiration for Cables. In fact, he credits herwith providing the tools for the evolution hesenses on the horizon.
Thinking about "the experience of being withHelen, our experience together" during close tothree decades, Cables says, "When you make amove for whatever reason, when that experienceis over, it leaves you with something you'vegained." These days, the pianist is ponderinghow he's "going to use that experience to dealwith the next part of this adventure on Earth."
The difference might be in his writing, or indeciding to play more with his trio, or in how heteaches his students at the New School. "Somethings are going to change for me, though I don'tknow how." One thing is for certain, whateverdirection he goes, no matter how long he's in thehallway waiting for a new door to swing wide,he's not going to be alone. Helen Wray will bethere is spirit.
George Cables, trumpeter NicholasPayton, saxophonist Donald Harrison, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummerLenny White present "Hub Art: The Musicof Freddie Hubbard" at Birdland onJanuary 25-29.

IT'S NOT OFTEN YOU GET TO HEAR Asaxophonist/composer whose experience
embodies nearly the entire range of Americanjazz and blues idioms of the 20th century. NewYorkers will have that opportunity when iconicreedman Charles Lloyd brings his New Quartetinto Rose Theater this month as part of a multi-city tour heralding the release of his new ECMCD, Mirror.
There are several fundamental pillars toLloyd's musical identity. While firmly groundedin gospel and blues, he has consistently soughtto grow the music through his personal journey, both spiritual and musical. And as is true of allgreat explorations, the journey is itself the goal,as much or more than the destination. Mirror ishis most current signpost of that journey. TheCD uses the same ensemble (Jason Moran onpiano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harlandon drums) heard on his critically acclaimed Rabode Nube, recorded live in 2008.
Continuing his tradition of interacting withmusicians just reaching the top of their games,Charles believes that his New Quartet comparesquite favorably with the great ensembles of hispast: "I feel this is my best group," he says. "Ithas been an organic development. It's about sur-

render and service. There is great trust amongus. We all love elevation and soaring."
The music chosen for Mirror reflects Lloyd'sdepth of interest and spirit and his search forgrace and truth. The CD features originals, tra-ditional hymns and jazz standards. A pair ofMonk ballads, "Ruby, My Dear" and "Monk'sMood," are startlingly beautiful, as is the stan-dard "I Fall In Love Too Easily". His traditionalroots are represented by three hymns: "Go DownMoses," "Lift Every Voice And Sing" and "TheWater Is Wide." Originals include "DesolationSound," "Mirror," "Tagi" (which incorporates aBhagavad Gita-inspired spoken meditation byLloyd) and "Being and Becoming."
"We recorded Mirror in a single day," notesthe saxophonist. "For us, it wasn't all that dif-ferent from a concert, except it was muchmore relaxed. I think most tracks requiredjust one take."
Born in Memphis in 1938, Charles Lloydworked locally with a diversity of artists, rangingfrom bluesmen B.B. King and Howlin' Wolfthrough pianist Phineas Newborn, who servedas an inspirational father figure to many youngplayers on the Memphis jazz scene. Lloyd earneda graduate degree at the University of SouthernCalifornia, with an emphasis on classical music, then joined Chico Hamilton's popular quintet asa replacement for Eric Dolphy. By 1964, he waspart of Cannonball Adderley's band, as well as arecording star in his own right, given the popu-larity of best-selling performances like "ForestFlower."
Soon, he was being accorded top billing atrock venues like San Francisco's FillmoreAuditorium. Downbeat honored him as "JazzArtist of the Year" in 1967. Since then, he'sestablished musically rewarding partnershipswith Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter,Tony Williams, Michel Petrucciani, JohnAbercrombie and Geri Allen, among others. Hislengthy discography reflects the history of jazz, significant trends of modern music and his ownunique personal touch.
Lloyd's been a witness to - and participant in- a significant evolution in jazz over severaldecades, particularly during the stylisticupheavals of the 60s and 70s. "When you lovemusic you love a lot of it," he says. "But jazz isAmerica's indigenous art form and it's beenadopted by many different cultures. As theworld has become much smaller, music fromAfrica or India or Japan can reach our ears in ananosecond. I travel a lot and I hear beautiful, creative things coming not only from theseshores, but from places like Cape Town orMelbourne, or along the Ganges inDakshineswar." Lloyd says he feels that audi-ences he encounters at his concerts are moreaware and more open to innovation than everbefore. "I'm usually amazed at their knowledgeand thirst for direct experience."
In a way, we're all invited passengers onCharles Lloyd's journey, one of musical discov-ery and self-discovery. His own musical journeyhas led him through a remarkably deeplabyrinth of styles and idioms. We're all the rich-er for it.
Charles Lloyd and his New Quartet per-form at Jazz at Lincoln Center's RoseTheater on January 29.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be
found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.
Kenny Berger told me that a fellow arranger once asked Manny Albam howmuch Woody Herman paid for a chart. Manny replied, "Usually around three bills. Two tensand a five."
When Arturo Toscanini was the conductor of the NBC Symphony, he often spenttime at the Waldorf bar, sipping champagne. When the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra was atthe Waldorf, the famous trombonist was introduced to Maestro Toscanini, who told him,"You've got a wonderful orchestra. But you're a little sharp."
Carl Reiner was telling of a writer's meeting for the old Sid Caesar show. Reinerarrived late because of a doctor's appointment. He told the group, "I've got arrhythmia." MelBrooks immediately said, "Who could ask for anything more?"
