The month of July is blessed with so

The event was conducted with the help of 44 CYBER-

GEN committees. Two modules, namely Microsoft

Office PowerPoint and Photoscape were introduced to

the participants. The students were taught ways to

“If at first you fail, you allow it to be but

you rise up and work hard again to make

things happen.”

Nabila Lau

Nabila Lau, a simple yet unique UTP student currently

in her final year final semester ICT. Nabila, an ICT stu-

dent was the president of English Language Club (ELC)

and one of the founding advisors of HOT. Nabila is one

of the very few students who managed to do their in-

ternship in Schlumberger. Let’s listen to Nabila for

what she has to say.

Can you tell us about some of the hardships that you

face in establishing HOT and as the president of ELC

and how you managed to overcome them?

It is without doubt that in most of the things we do in

life there will definitely be challenges. And those chal-

lenges are especially greater when one holds a posi-

tion of respect where people look up to you for ulti-

mate decision, unending guidance and support. Two

terms of service in the English Language Club of UTP

were indeed memorable to me. It was the time when

the club itself was growing rapidly in the campus. Be-

cause of its growth, it had faced a few challenges in

terms of its continual funding, gathering a pool of

committed members, holding worthy events and ac-

tivities, and working hard alongside the dedicated

management of the club. One of the toughest choicesI had to make was when I revamped the management

team by changing the divisions as well as the job

scopes of the departmental heads. It was not easy to

change the club but it was the best move in order to

get the management team running and things done

rightfully just to cater the growth of the club.

Many new UTP students might think that joining co-

curricular activity can be a waste of time and prefer

to give their time to only study. What do you think of

this approach?

I must say this is a fallacy. I believe in moderation.

Studies are equally as important as co-curricular activi-

ties. While by studying we are learning important

knowledge, I think by joining co-curricular activities we

are also learning- especially on matters that cannot betaught at all by books. For example, through my par-

ticipation as a facilitator for a day event with school

children, I learnt how to be confident and disciplined

in order to ensure orderliness among the young chil-

dren. Also, by joining co-curricular activities, one could

see that life is not only about achieving high marks on

exam papers but also unleashing one’s potential in

soft skills which are vital for future employment in

companies. You will see yourself better with your con-

stant involvement in activities or events in the cam-

pus.

Do you find that the co-curricular activities and

events in UTP are on a satisfying level in such a way

that they can really develop students and help create

well-rounded graduates?

Right now we must not blame solely on the co-

curricular activities and events for being not being sat-

isfying. In fact, I would chirp in that students them-

selves should make initiatives if they want to fulfill the

university’s vision in creating well-rounded graduates.

It may be tough for a start especially in deciding the

right club or event to join, but then again tough people

really do last. Hence, to create that impression of be-

ing a good student, students themselves must change

their mindsets about only joining huge events or clubs

which promise fun and the allegedly ‘more beneficial’

in terms of beautifying their resumes or having greater

opportunity to climb the club ladder for much coveted

positions. To be honest, good events or clubs are not

about the size or popularity, rather it’s the amount of

experience gained through your participation. There’s

no limit at all in the possibility of making even activi-

ties in a new club or small event truly enjoyable and

rewarding. At the end of the day, you just want to see

how far you have gone and tell yourself that, yes, Imade it and successfully too! That’s accomplishment

at its best. For this I can happily say that I had been

there, done that.

What’s the secret recipe to achieve something great?

The secret recipe is FAITH+HARDWORK+ COMMIT-

MENT+ DARE TO FAIL attitude. If at first you fail, you

allow it to be but you rise up and work hard again to

make things happen. You may fail but you don’t give

up. Instead, steadily work zealously until you reach

your goal. Be committed in your assigned responsibili-

ties and the people around you. Remember that com-

mitment is infectious. If you are committed in your

work, I believe the outcome will be good. And most

importantly, have faith in yourself.

How were you able to get an internship in Schlumber-

ger?

I had my internship in the Recruiting department in

Schlumberger for 8 months. I was selected after three

stages of the interviewing process and until today, I

feel very lucky for this rare opportunity. It was indeed

a rewarding experience being in the company.

Can you share some of the things that you learned

 from your internship with us?

From my internship, I think soft skills are evidently im-

portant in the working environment. As much as

grades are important, being able to communicate and

write well in English (even more so for those mastering

a handful of languages) is really essential. Not only

other people could understand you better, it also pro-

vides an emotional boost if you are able to communi-

cate well. A good communicator is usually a confident

person. Hence, I would really urge UTP students to

take this seriously and learn English or other popular

languages (French, Mandarin, Arabic, and Japanese) to

stand a better chance of employment in your desired

companies.

Lastly, what do you hope to achieve in your life?

I am a person with many dreams. I have always loved

education and hence my long term goal would be join-

ing the academic world in the future. Another dream

of mine is to become a part-time cartoonist. I believe

one should never restrict oneself to only one path in

life because we should live our life with the sky as the

limit. Nothing is impossible as long as you really, really

go for it!
