October Issue of Heart of Tronoh (HOT) Official Campus Bulletin of Universiti Teknologi Petronas, UTP.TRANSCRIPT
Editor’s Foreword
When asked of his aspirations towards the future of the
university during Q&A session, he humorously
commented that he wishes to see more blondes than black
haired people here in UTP.
He went on to clarify that what he meant was that he
hopes the university will one day begin to attract students
from developed and Western countries. Some senior
students also took the opportunity to express their
longstanding admiration for Datuk Zainal and their regret
at his retirement.
The event drew to a close
with a short video montage
prepared by Rakan Masjid,
preceded by a gift-giving
ceremony in which various
organisations and clubs

appreciation to Datuk Zainal.
Tronoh, 29th October –
After seven and a half years of being at the helm of the
university’s administration, it was time for our beloved Vice
Chancellor Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim to make his last
live address to students of UTP.
He to share his experiences at an open event titled “The Leadership
Journey – My Experience” held at the Undercroft recently.
The casually dressed VC began
his speech by reminiscing on his education and his career at
PETRONAS in which he has been attached to for 36 years. The
audience who comprised of students from various faculties
and academic years were left laughing in stitches as they were
entertained by VC’s amusing anecdotes. As S.Kesavarthiny
(PE, 1st Sem) puts it, “I’ve always thought of him as a
serious and quiet man. He’s actually a really funny guy! He
gives very practical advice too!”
The experience has altered her view of the VC entirely.
As he went along, Datuk DR
Zainal shared details of his personal life and even showcased
photographs of his childhood and
schooling years at Malay College Kuala Kangsar. At this point he
expressed his disappointment at the severe lack of racial
integration observed on campus, a problem that never existed
during his schooling days. The VC also spoke of the sacrifices he
made to arrive where he is today, one of them was to be separated
from his wife soon after marriage for a year in order to complete his
Masters degree. Other topics touched on by the VC were on
how to deal with failure and how to be a good leader. According to
Datuk Dr Zainal, “The essence of good leadership is one’s charac-
ter” and “It is not what you say, but what people hear that mat-
ters”.

Signing ceremony between Institute of Technology PETRONAS
(ITPSB) and PV hi Tech.
UTP students bid their last farewell.
UTP students rushing for an autograph from the Vice Chancellor A Farewell Ceremony was organised for our beloved Vice
Chancellor Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim
Here’s a short paragraph on the Vice Chancellor’s view on
the most important ethics that a leader or an individual
should have. Source retrieved from The Inspirer.
Integrity is the most important of all. Integrity means we
are responsible for our words and action. If a leader is
known to have the highest integrity, the whole organization
can be successfully driven since there is openness and trust
with everyone. Professionalism is important, we should
not let emotions interfere with our performance. There are 3
senses that we must follow and that includes purpose,
urgency and common sense. We must prioritize our
purpose and goals, so that we can finish them in time. That
brings us to urgency, we must respect time, punctuality is
by far the most neglected value in our society and we must
not waste our valuable time. Lastly, common sense,
everyone has them but very few put it in good use because
they neglect the importance of righteousness.
