Message From Our CEO

I would like to thank everyone at Catskill Regional Medical Center for the warm welcome. In the short time that I have been here, I’ve met many wonderful and passionate staff members who are dedicated to CRMC’s mission of improving the health of our community by providing exceptional patient care. This is an exciting time for CRMC, as our ED construction project is progressing and several other large-scale projects/initiatives are in the works. As a team and as a family, our No. 1 priority is to provide positive patient experiences through quality health care and top-notch customer service. Our AIDET Initiative is extremely important, and will strengthen our customer service skills so that we may provide excellent service to our patients. Another focus area for this year is teamwork and team building. The stronger the CRMC staff becomes as a team, the stronger our positive patient outcomes will be. Rosemary Frado,Interim CEO

Catskill Regional Medical Center’s (CRMC) Laboratory was recently named Medical Laboratory Observer magazine’s Lab of the Year. This national recognition is a great honor for our Lab and for CRMC. Our Lab prides itself on offering quality services, and is dedicated to achieving excellence and promoting education.

The CRMC Lab is fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), The Joint Commission, and is licensed by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). The Lab has received a variety of national awards from Medical Laboratory Observer magazine and the American Red Cross for outstanding performance in laboratory medicine. Our Lab pathologists are Board-certified in both clinical and anatomic pathology.

Dr. Joseph Napolitano (Dr. Nap), Medical Director of the Lab, and Mona Makofsky, Lab Administrative Director, have been with the Lab for 23 years and 35 years, respectively. Both Dr. Nap and Mona encourage education and lead by example. They train medical lab technicians and phlebotomy students at Orange County Community College (OCCC). Dr. Nap is the Medical Director for the education program and Mona is a member of the Board of Directors. Additionally, Dr. Nap is

the current Division Commissioner for the Western New York State division of CAP, and the CRMC Lab provides a certified CAP inspection team that has performed site surveys in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Education is the cornerstone of CRMC’s Lab. Most of the close-knit staff members have at least 20 years of experience, and have advanced their careers through education. When a staff member expresses

the desire to continue education and advance his or her career, the Lab management team is very accommodating.

The CRMC Lab also actively participates in hospital and

vendor education initiatives. Currently, the Lab is leading the hospital-wide Patient Identification Initiative and is working closely with the Emergency Department to improve specimen acceptability. Rosemary Steuber, the Blood Bank Supervisor, often works hand-in-hand with the American Red Cross education initiatives, and most recently Barbara Huber, Hematology Supervisor, conducted a mini-Hematology Fair so that staffers could see the latest automation.

Technology is an important component of education, and the Lab is always looking to stay current or ahead of the technology curve. This tenet began in the 1990s when

CRMC’s Lab has been named 2011 Lab of the Year by Medical Laboratory Observer (MLO) magazine. MLO is a national publication with more than 48,000 subscribers. Each year, MLO sponsors the Lab of the Year competition, which is open to all medical Labs across the United States. The criteria for the award is based on customer service, contributions to patient care, teamwork, productivity, efficiency, quality control, innovation and creativity.

The Lab was honored for their accomplishment at the Sullivan County Government Center on April 21, and CRMC held a congratulatory reception for the Lab staff on April 27 in the ASB Boardrooms. Geri Orr, AVP of Professional Services, Dr. Joseph Napolitano, Medical Director of the Lab, and Rosemary Steuber, Blood Bank Supervisor, each spoke at the event and all Lab staff members received a gift. Gerald Skoda, Board of Directors President, and Joan Farrow, Board of Directors member and CRMC Foundation President, attended the event.

A “Meet and Greet” reception was held for new Interim CEO Rosemary Frado on May 5 in the 2nd floor ASB Boardrooms. More than 200 staff members attended, and it provided an excellent opportunity for staff members to meet Rosemary and for her to learn more about our CRMC family.

the Lab increased services and invested in technology while other Labs were either shrinking or shutting down. This strategy has proven successful and since then, the Lab is always aware of the latest advancements. Most recently, the Callicoon Lab purchased a new chemistry analyzer and began a Coumadin Clinic with new technology. The Blood Bank will soon be introducing automation to enhance the workflow on evening/night shifts and to make antibody identification more efficient.

With a culture centered on excellence and education, it is no surprise that CRMC has been named Lab of the Year.

For more information on our Lab services, please contact ext. 2198.

What was your first job out of school?I worked as a bank teller during summers and vacations in high school and college. How did you start your career in health care? As an intern in the Denver General Hospital Emergency Room. Why did you choose to work in the health care industry?I wanted to be a psychiatrist since age 15 after reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, “Tender is the Night.” Why did you join Catskill Regional Medical Center? To live in a beautiful, peaceful environment to raise our twins. They were one when we came here and just celebrated their 10th birthdays. What is the most unusual assignment you have taken on?The job I’m in now. It is rare that a psychiatrist becomes the Chief Medical Officer in a General Hospital. What are your interests outside of work?Skeet and sport clay shooting, visiting my grandkids, playing basketball, skiing and swimming with my kids.

What are you currently reading?“Lives Like Loaded Guns,” a book about Emily Dickinson. What type of music do you listen to?Opera, oldies and occasionally jazz. What is your favorite sport to be a spectator at and why?Rugby, because you are right next to the action and the after parties are terrific. If you could have dinner with any famous person in history (alive or deceased), who would it be and why?Winston Churchill. From the Boer War, World Wars I and II, the Great Depression, the freeing of the English colonies to the Iron Curtain, he was involved in the great events of the late 19th and middle 20th centuries. He was also a great conversationalist, in spite of struggling with a speech impediment his entire life.

2011 CRMC Golf Tournament The 33rd Annual Catskill Regional Medical Center Golf Classic will be held at Tennanah Lake Golf & Country Club in Roscoe, N.Y., on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Last year’s golf outing was a huge success, and it could not have been done without the assistance of our great CRMC staff. We will once again have our gift basket contest, where departments can create a gift basket to be donated as a raffle prize at the golf outing. Last year, the staff gift baskets were one of the highlights of the tournament and were very impressive. Details for this year’s gift basket contest will be coming soon! We are seeking sponsors and players, so please make sure your vendors are aware of the tournament and the opportunities available to support CRMC. This is the primary hospital-wide fundraiser that we put on each year. The funds raised from this year’s event will be used to purchase a computerized tomographic angiography (CTA) software package for CRMC’s 64-slice CT scanner, which can non-invasively evaluate the arteries and veins in most parts of the body, including the heart, and produce images of each section in 20 seconds or less. If you are interested in volunteering at the event, or would like more information, contact J.P. McGuirk at ext. 2070 or email [email protected]
