Kia ora koutou Our students are engaging positively in their learning and have quickly settled into their classroom routines. I am also impressed with the general wearing of our college uniform and the positive feel around our college.

I want to make special mention of our House Day on February 19. It was awesome to see our students and staff on both campuses dressed up and positively supporting each other. The atmosphere and the variety of events on offer meant there was something for everyone to take part in. It was disappointing on the senior campus the number of students who opted out but more so, parents who covered for them.

The first term in any secondary school is always a busy one as we try to make

Tena KoutouJHC has signed a supply contract with sports apparel company Kooga which will have many positive benefits for our college. We are adding a soft shell jacket as an optional uniform item. Samples will be on both campuses within the next fortnight and details around online ordering will be communicated through all our usual channels.

Our Strategic Plan including 2021 Annual Priorities and 2020 Analysis of Variance will be finalised at our next board meeting. Many of our ‘vital statistics’ and national measures are looking very positive again. These documents

the most of the more settled weather. Our Year 7 and 8 EOTC camps are in full swing, as are many class trips and summer sports. There are a vast array of opportunities for our students to sign up for and our daily notices is the place where they are advertised. Students and parents can access the daily notices through the Kamar Portal and College Website but the easiest place to access everything is our James Hargest App.

PTA Report

Monique ShirleyChairperson

Hello to all By now, I’m sure we have all settled back into the school routines, and I hope you are enjoying the great weather. The school sports day sounded like a new highlight of the new school year, and the new format went down a treat with the students. As always, it’s a busy time with sports days, scheduling sports teams and the list goes on, I’m sure, for you all. That said, if you can spare a few hours over the year for the PTA, we extend a warm welcome to you all to join us at the PTA meetings this year. We will set the dates for the year at the upcoming AGM on March 16th. After this we will publish all meeting dates in the newsletter. We always enjoy meeting new parents/caregivers – so please take the time to pop along to the meetings and get an

insight/update directly from the teachers representing both campuses, you may be surprised/amazed at what information the kids didn’t pass on to you!!

The next meeting will be the AGM on 16th March 2021 at 7.30pm, which will be held in the Brig (above the front office) at the Senior Campus.

Kind regards Monique Shirley PTA Chairperson

The next PTA meeting will be held in Brigadier’s Room at the Senior Campus, scheduled to start at 7.30pm.Tuesday 16 March 2021 (AGM)

Whanau Report

Kia ora koutou katoa. Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere. Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōna te ao The bird who partakes of the miro berry owns the forest. The bird who partakes of education owns the world.

Education is about allowing students to be the best that they can be, and I am really enjoying seeing the diverse cultural gifts coming through my classroom as I get to know my students better. I look forward to meeting my Year Nine parents shortly, and I am grateful for the contact I have had with those parents who have indicated areas where their tamariki need encouragement to step forward and develop their unique gifts. Our kapa haka group is one area where

we can encourage our students to grow their cultural connections, and the group is off to a good start this year with a lovely performance for their greater whānau at the recent barbeque. They have a number of local performances coming up, so please show your support if you see them performing while you are out and about. Their first fund-raising hangi is probably being enjoyed as you read this, so if you missed out, make sure you book meals for the next one.

My email is: [email protected] Please feel free to make contact.

Staff Farewell

Jackie McCullumWe are very sad to say haere ra to Jackie McCullum. Jackie has worked in Student Administration and supporting sports at JHC. Her smiley face and positive attitude will be sorely missed by students and staff. Nothing was ever a problem for Jackie, she was resourceful and thorough in all areas of her work. We wish her all the best at her new endeavour.

Nano means one billionth so nano-camp is focused on the study of tiny particles. NanoCamp in Christchurch was an experience like no other. We were able to understand university life and discover scientific fields offered at the University of Canterbury; we also had hands-on experience through a range of experiments. The highlights of these experiences included making nano-gold particles, solar cells as well as re-cycling bio-plastic. We spent time in a chemical lab making nano-gold particles within a solvent. As a result, the solution was not gold coloured as expected but ranged from dark purple to light pink.

For the solar cell experiment we made voltage using blueberries. With a titanium oxide and blueberry dye on one conductor and carbon on the other, we created a current when we exposed this experiment to sunlight. This was mind-boggling as I had no idea

that you could use a berry or fruit like blueberries to make an electric current. In the chemical engineering lab where we re-purposed bioplastics, we recycled the cutlery that we had used from lunch prior. From there we cut the forks into small pieces then melted them down into a plastic disk. After this, using carbon dioxide, we created plastic foam. This opportunity was not just educational but social as well. Learning to surf, doing an escape room and bowling are some of the activities we did after a full day of learning. This allowed us to form stronger bonds with our fellow nano-campers.

On this camp I made strong friendships. For six days, we spent every minute of our time with people that at the start of the camp were strangers but grew to be a family. NanoCamp not only opened a whole

new world of science but allowed an opportunity for a diverse group of like-minded individuals to come together to form friendships with people, we may not have otherwise known. The Sonoda was a fantastic accommodation that had a games room where the 11 of us could enjoy our free time together either before or after the craziness of the day. NanoCamp was like nothing I had ever experienced before.

Senior students are all encouraged to log into NZQA regularly to track their progress towards their certificate. They should know how many credits they have earned, how many they still have available and be proactive about following up any issues.

NCEA levels and certificates There are three levels of NCEA certificate, depending on the difficulty of the standards achieved. At each level, students must achieve a certain number of credits to gain an NCEA certificate. Credits can be gained over more than one year.

NCEA Requirements Level 1 80 credits are required at any level (level 1, 2 or 3) including literacy and numeracy. Schools can explain the literacy and numeracy standard pathways they are using.

Level 2 60 credits at level 2 or above + 20 credits from any level

The Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must also be met.

Level 3 60 credits at level 3 or above + 20 credits from level 2 or above From 2014 the Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must also be met.

Credits gained at one level can be used for (or count towards) more than one certificate. They may also be used towards other qualifications. For example, unit standards in the domain ‘generic computing’ might be used towards a Level 2 NCEA certificate, as well as towards a National Certificate in Computing (Level 2); or 20 credits gained at Level 1 can also count towards a Level 2 NCEA certificate.

University Entrance University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to go t a New Zealand university. To be awarded UE you will need:

• NCEA Level 3

• Three subjects - at Level 3, made up of:

• 14 credits in each of three approved subjects

• Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: • 5 credits in reading • 5 credits in writing

NCEA Changes Being Planned

Pastoral Support with Year 7 & Year 8 Deans Junior Campus

Introduced this year are the added pastoral support positions of a Year 7 and Year 8 Dean. Chloe Madden is our Year 7 Dean, working alongside current leaders (Amy Coward and Rosie Shanks) and the homeroom teachers. This is another person able to give pastoral support for students in Year 7. Chloe can be contacted via email: [email protected]

In Year 8 we have Mandy Saunders supporting our leaders; Stuart Brown and Charlotte Payne. She continues working with the cohort of students from Year 7 in 2020, when Mandy was in the Year 7 leadership team. If needing to make contact, please email her at [email protected] Stuart Brown

• Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:

• achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or • unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required).

Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance, it will appear on your Record of Achievement.

NCEA Change Package – from 2023The NCEA changes will make our senior secondary qualification more robust, consistent, inclusive and accessible for students of all abilities and backgrounds. This provides an overview of the NCEA changes, and what they mean:Make NCEA more accessible Zero fees, fewer barriers for all learners, including those with disabilities and learning support needs by minimising the need for Special Assessment Conditions.

Mana ōrite mo te mātauranga Māori Equal status for mātauranga Māori in NCEA. Develop new ways to recognise mātauranga Māori, build teacher capability, and improve resourcing and support for Māori learners and te ao Māori pathways.

Strengthen literacy and numeracy requirements Ensure students with an NCEA have functional literacy and numeracy skills to ensure they are well-prepared to transition into further education or the workplace.

Have fewer, larger standards New achievement standards and resources will be developed to replace existing standards and ensure the qualification credentials the most significant learning in a learning area or subject.

Simplify NCEA’s structure Credits can no longer be carried over to the next level and resubmissions will only be allowed where they take students from a Not Achieved grade to an Achieved grade. Sixty credits are required to pass each NCEA level.

Show clearer pathways to further education and employment Develop a Vocational Entrance Award to clearly signal when a student is ready to transition into higher level vocational education and strengthen vocational pathways through NCEA.

Powering Potential

In December 2020, Finn Cruickshank was selected as part of a group of 40 students from around the country to attend the Royal Society’s Powering Potential programme in Wellington. The three day event saw them working in groups to research a question posed by their tutor and eventually presenting their findings to their peers. Finn’s group worked with Associate Professor Logan Walker to research genetic data and its use in preventative treatment of diseases.

Our inaugural House Day took place on Friday 19 February 2021, kicking off house spirit, participation, competitive banter, and fun for the year. It was fabulous to see students and staff arriving for the day decked out in their house colours with many costumes reflecting a great deal of time, effort and creativity. The first competitive moment of the day was the House Chant. Our Year 13 leaders and their Year 13 peers began the process of developing these at their Orientation Day. Each house was in strong voice, none as strong as Thomson who took out the win on this occasion. Watson came in 2nd, Menzies 3rd.

There were a huge number of both scheduled and ‘drop in’ events for students to participate in to earn points for their house. Scheduled events included 100m, 200m, Long Jump, Tug of War and the Obstacle Course. The obstacle course involved a tyre run, hurdle over a vault, crawl under cargo net, balance along a bench, before ‘splatting’ on the pad at the end. A significant number of shoes were lost as competitors made their way through the cargo net portion of the race.

‘Drop in’ events were those which students could engage in at any time of the day, as many times as they liked. There was great variety from the much loved ‘gumboot throw’ and ‘vortex throw’ to the ‘tennis ball roulette’ where you took your gamble in taking a shot … not hitting your mark signed the points over to another house! The ‘fitness challenge’ proved very popular with some impressive results: Eamonn Thwaites took out the rowing, Spencer Cunliffe was the chin up champion, Tequin Lake longest male wall sit, Ella Wylie excelled at the female prone hold and Ella Dougherty, female press ups to name just a few of these results. Staff outcomes in this challenge were pretty outstanding too. It was fantastic to see so many having a go at boccia (a seated lawn bowls game) which continued right throughout the lunch break due to student demand.

The day culminated in the 100m finals, House relay and staff relay. Hearing

House Day 2021

the students cheering on their house members in each race was phenomenal to hear and we don’t believe the volume could have been any louder than for the very competitive ending of the staff relay, requiring a photo finish.

The overall champions on the day were Hamilton - well done Hamilton. You’ll have a target on your back now as all the other houses seek to overtake your lead in upcoming events. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for what comes next.

In an earlier event held recently, Year 9 Benchball, 9GOR (Watson House) took out the top spot. Well done to all Year 9 classes for a very healthy interclass competition and a huge thank you to Mrs Scobie, Mr McNaught and Year 13 Peer Support for making this happen.

Assessment Procedures

Look out for this at home and discuss it with your child!

The age of e-mail contact has had the effect of making teacher/parent and teacher/student communication much easier, and, as a result, much more frequent! Generally this has been very positive for all of us.Whilst staff accessibility is encouraged, we have recognised the need for some guidelines in order to allow staff to “switch off” after normal work hours. (Part of being a “Good Employer”).

Guidelines/Expectations• We recognise that parents

often send e-mails in evenings or weekends. (When they have time to attend to parenting issues!) However, staff are not expected to read or reply to e-mails after hours (ie during evenings, weekends or holidays).

• Staff response time will be variable according to their workload and teaching pressures. They are expected to acknowledge your email the next working day, and, where required, follow up with a more detailed response as soon as practicable (generally within two more days).

• Online accessibility of teachers by students follows the same guidelines, ie:• queries and questions may

not be read or answered “after hours”

• response times will vary• responses will be made as

soon as practicable

Omaui Camp

Our Year 7 students have started the year with much excitement; some risk taking, challenges and team building activities. Our camps to Omaui began early, with our first class going in the second week of the term. It has been fantastic watching our new students rise to the challenges and give their best, participating with enthusiasm during a variety of activities. From tramping, abseiling and adventure based learning to contributing during team duties, our students are quickly

showing that they have picked up the culture of ‘The Hargest Way’. Our camps will continue through to week eight of this term. It is a valuable experience and positive way of establishing a team culture within each class. We appreciate the support of many parents and whanau members. Your contribution has added to the smooth running of our camping experience.

Canoe Polo Along with 90 future “star” players Lena Huia took part in the NZCPA (New Zealand Canoe Polo Association) Development Camp in December and made it into the 11 player strong U21 female development squad.

These players were selected as the best male or female players who will potentially represent NZ at future Oceania Games

Waitangi weekend was an opportunity to see the two teams chosen (male & female) from the 2020 NZCPA Development Camp play at the Atahua Champs in Palmerston North.

Both teams were placed in highly competitive grades to challenge them and give them opportunity to play good solid polo with strong opposition.

(December 2021 in NZ) and World Championships (2022 in St. Omer/France).

The NZCPA Development Camp seeks to gather the best up and coming young players and through quality coaching, skill development (mental and physical) within a supportive high performance culture, show the pathway to future NZ representation.

2021 Rookies Cup Cormac Buchanan is the first New Zealand rider ever selected for the prestigious Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Now in it’s 15th season, former Rookies Cup riders have gone on to win 7 World Championships and over 100 MotoGP races. The programme is highly regarded as a vital stepping stone into the sport’s elite ranks.

Cormac will join 25 riders from 16 different countries for the 2021 Rookies Cup, racing in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria. Germany and Finland on the custom-built KTM RC250R Moto3 machines. The season runs from April to September.

Stepping up to Moto3 race bikes and riding on iconic circuits will be a massive development for Cormac but he’s excited for the challenges ahead with the aim of progressing throughout the season and ultimately securing a place in the 2022 Rookies Cup.

He leaves at the end of the month for testing at the Portimao circuit in Portugal, followed by the first two races there. The Rookies Cup competes as part of the MotoGP so he will be sharing the paddock with legends the

calibre of Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. During his time overseas, Cormac will also ride in the British Talent Cup in the UK (from May to October) which will mean a lot of time travelling between the UK and Europe for various race weekends. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore different countries and cultures (and hopefully the Spanish he’s been learning at James Hargest will come in handy!).

Painting by Claudia Young-Blomfield, commissioned by JHC Visual Art Department. She joins an elite group of Artists whose work is displayed in the reception area of the school

Cormac will return home in October to prepare for the 2021 NZSBK Championship with the Yamaha New Zealand Racing Team which he has been a member of for the past two seasons. He is currently leading both the SuperSport 300 and SuperSport 150 classes in the national championships.

You can follow his journey on Facebook and Instagram through @cormacracing.

Phone calls/Messages for Students

The office is getting a large number of phone calls from parents asking for messages to be relayed to their child. Please make after school arrangements and reminders prior to the school day, as we cannot guarantee getting any last minute messages to your child. This is especially difficult on a Friday afternoon when the students are out at Sport.

Year 7 Vision Testing

Absences/ Late to School/Signing in or Out

Health Nurse

The Vision Technicians visit the Junior Campus to undertake vision screening for all Year 7 students and colour vision screening for Year 7 male students. Your child will not be screened if they are under the care of a Specialist and/or Optometrist. Parents/caregivers will be notified if further assessment is required by an Optometrist. If you do NOT wish your child to be screened, please notify the school. Some Year 8 students who were absent in Year 7, or who require retesting, may also be seen by the Vision Technicians.

When you phone in an absence, please give the reason so it can be recorded with the correct coding in the attendance system. A medical certificate is requested at 3 days. Please note that classes start at 8.50am and students are to be in class by that time. If students come in late, they are to go to the office before going to class to sign in and have their names deleted from the absence list. When collecting your child for an appointment please report to the office to collect them, not the classroom. Any visitors/parents coming to the school need to come via the office. If collecting a child we will phone for them to come to the office if necessary. They will need to sign out at the office and back in again when they return. Please advise your child’s teacher via email, a message in their diary or a note.

Sun SafetyStudents may wear plain white caps or hats when outside during summer. They are not to be worn in class and must have the name written on the inside. We encourage students to bring their own sunscreen but do have it available on the counter at the school office.

Morning NoticesEach morning classes have the day’s notices read out to them. Notices include information on academic, sports and cultural activities available to students. These notices are available on the James Hargest website after 11am.

The Health Nurse is available at the Junior Campus. If you have any concerns please phone the school office and we will arrange for Miss Peterson to contact you. If students wish to see the Health Nurse they are able to make an appointment by placing a request in the red post box in the office foyer.
