In popular culture, the word ‘heaven’ is general-ly used to mean a place of never-ending happi-ness where good people go when they die. Jesus often spoke about ‘the kingdom of heaven’, but what exactly did he mean by that? Despite his use of the word ‘kingdom’ here (which in Eng-lish usually refers to a place), the kingdom of heaven is not a physical place but a state of be-ing – of being in the loving presence of God. It is also a state of being that is both present and future. If we can know the loving presence of God now in our lives, we have grounds for hop-ing that this loving presence will continue be-yond death. In Christian teaching, Jesus’ own living, dying and rising for us assures us that is so. Four facts are clear from God’s word about Heaven. There is a future life; there is no inter-mediate place, no purgatory, no soul sleep, the eternal destiny of the soul is determined by this side of the Grave, there is no second chance after death, the only source of information we have about Heaven is the Bible. What does the Bible have to say about Heaven? Heaven Is A Place, John 14:1-6- Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Fa-ther’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Heaven is a real place, a location. Where is Heaven? Heaven is up – which place is up? Psalm 48:1-3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of

his holiness. [2] Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. [3] God is known in her palaces for a refuge. Isaiah 14:13-14- For thou hast said in thine heart, I will as-cend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: [14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Heaven Is a Prepared Place; No one will be in Heaven by surprise. Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a re-warder of them that diligently seek him. John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Heav-en Is a Place of Holiness; it is holy because of what is barred from it. No sin – no sickness – no sorrow – no pain – no death – no darkness – no wickedness – no person who has rejected Christ as Saviour. Nothing that defiles is there; no fu-neral homes, no cemeteries, no hospitals, no or-phanages, no prisons or police, Heaven Is a Place of Rest, the burdens of life are lifted, earthly cares are left behind. Heaven is at the End of the Christian Life; Place of Reward, a reward for those who say “Yes” to Jesus. Be-loved, Heaven is a wonderful place to be, let nothing on earth stop you from getting there. Shalom!
