editor’s note
H O U S T O N
Ever so often Mother Naturehas to show Houstonians justhow “semi” our semi-tropical
climate is. She put on quite a showduring The Deep Freeze thisJanuary. I have several black crispyshrubs to remove at home, and ouroffice garden took quite a hit.
We assigned stories for ourLandscape Planning Special Issuelong before The Deep Freeze, butnow they seem especially relevant aseveryone looks for replacementplants. I love Suzie Fischer and MikeGibson’s list of 29 plants that dowell in Houston gardens and willhave it in hand when I visit the gar-den centers this spring.
David Morello’s story and sketchon the importance of planning yourgarden before you plant is very help-ful, along with a host of other sto-ries full of tips and ideas. And nowsuddenly it feels like spring andplanting season.
With the change in the seasoncomes personal change for me. Thiswill be my last issue at the magazineas I am taking medical leave toaddress some health issues. I’ve beenprivileged to sit in the editor’s chairhere for almost eight years, andwhat a joy my work has been. Aspecial thanks to owners of the mag-
azine Mike Harrison and TimBeeson for this privilege. Mike notonly knows how to found and runthe business of the magazine, herecently won an international dancecompetition and is currently enjoy-ing rock star status. Tim knowshow to guide a magazine throughstormy waters while keeping thecoolest head imaginable. I admirehis nerves of steel.
Thanks to Associate PublisherSusie Reisenbigler for supportingmy editorial work and for alwayshaving a Golden Retriever on handhere at the office for instant affec-tion and stress relief. Thanks toShrek Beeson, the funniest Mini-Dachschund on the planet for allthe laughs. And thanks to all my co-workers for being terrific to workwith.
The immensely talented writerand editor Sandra Cook will servethe magazine as editor starting nextmonth. Sandra and I used to worktogether at the old Houston Life, andyou’ve read her house features forHouse & Home many times over thelast eight years.
Most of all, dear readers, thankyou for being there and picking upthe magazine. May your homesalways be filled with peace and love.

CLEARING THE CLUTTER, UPDATING WINDOW TREATMENTS ANDADDING NEW PAINT GREATLY IMPROVE A L IV ING ROOM
Mary and Tom called me because they wanted toupdate their formal living and dining rooms at minimalcost.
They liked the fact that I work with what clients have instead of startingover. Before we met, Mary had dutifully pulled photos from magazines ofrooms that she liked.
“I didn’t want to make costly mistakes and didn’t want to toss out every-thing that we had. We wanted a timeless, fresh look, with color and designchoices that would last and not look ‘trendy’,” Mary explained.
It had been a number of years since the couple had removed the wallbetween the dining and formal living rooms, and at that time, Mary hadtried different paint swatches on the wall. She chickened out, playing it safeby painting the walls off white. This is what a lot of my clients do—play itsafe with light beige walls, light carpet and the same window treatments theyhad before. Yawn.
“I knew the floral look was outdated and with the light walls and carpetthe room felt cold,” Mary said. She admits that having white carpet underthe dining table made her feel anxious when they entertained and she wasreally glad when I recommended putting one practical floor throughout theentry, dining, living room, den and kitchen. “I wanted warm, casual, com-fortable and timeless rooms, but didn’t know how or where to start,” Maryexplained.
tip>In a traditional formal room, it is even more important tocreate a casual, friendly seating arrangement that invites
guests to enter and to choose practical fab-rics that you can imagine children sittingon. Mary showed me one photo of a room thatshe loved, and was excited to learn that most ofher furnishings could be rearranged, reupholsteredand reused.
tip>In order to achieve a magazinelook, a lot of simplifying and de-
cluttering must take place before addingany new elements. She was delighted that her

• Think “green”—painting an existing mirror and reupholsteringseating instead of buying new repurposes them and saves money, too.
• Paint consistently gives the most “bang for your buck.”
• Think outside the box. A new Ballard Designs.com chain covercan transform an already-paid-for chandelier for pennies on the dol-lar.
• Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to buy more furni-ture and accessories for your home, but to first rethink the piecesthat are already paid for.

window sheers could be recycled and that we would not only work with the bluearmchairs, but actually create an entire color scheme around them.
By the end of our first meeting, Mary was feeling very comfortable with what wehad decided upon. The sofa and wing chair would be recycled with new fabric, aMalika Pottery Barn wool area rug would be added on top of new Armstrong GrandIllusions Cherry Bronze flooring from Forsyth Floor Co. and the dining room furni-ture kept. A Ballard Designs.com cord cover would be added to the existing chande-lier and Tom would rub paint on the mirror with Modern Masters Metallic PaintCollection paint (“English Brown”) and hang the mirror vertically. Artwork, familypictures and lamps were moved to different rooms.
We also agreed to add solid curtain panels on each side of the existing sheers, newcurtain rods and set up another time to shop for fabric at Interior Fabrics. I suggestedthey buy a casual Square Head floor lamp from Target to place beside the formalsofa.
While Mary had paper and pen out to write notes, I assured her it was not neces-sary because I would write everything down and allow her to instead listen and askquestions. The notes, drawings and sources then allowed Mary not only to discussthe meeting details with her husband, but also to take them with her shopping.
BEFORE: Dated, swagged window treat-ments, too many dining chairs around thetable and a bare chandelier chain made theroom feel quite formal.

For the Love of ItTHE ROMANCE OF WRITING ON
ANTIQUE DESKS AND TABLES
From Carl Moore Antiques, a splendid Art Moderne writing table from France circa 1940 construct-ed of highly figured walnut. The cylindrical legs of this table create a powerful silhouette and placeit firmly in the pantheon of 20th century design. The writing surface features a series of bookmatched walnut panels placed to emphasize their graphic impact.
Do you have a heart full of emotion and wantto find the best way to express it? Why notwrite your love letter, poem or note on anantique desk or writing table? It may providejust the inspiration you’re looking for.
“When you sit down at an antique desk, you get a differentfeeling because so many hands, pens, pencils have been therebefore,” says Geoffrey Westergaard, president of Carl MooreAntiques. “You can see the places that were rubbed by a fore-arm draped in lace or wearing a tweed jacket, the ink stains, theink blots—all the indentations and marks that have accumulat-ed over time. What we respond to emotionally is the knowledgethat we’re not the first person to sit there. We sense that conti-nuity of emotion, especially when we’re writing letters full offeeling.”
Connie Blakeman, staff member at Antique Pavilion, calls it“the warmth of age.” She says, “You feel the history of anantique piece, even if you don’t know exactly what that historyis. It feels wonderful to me.”
Antique desks and writing tables can be found in a widerange of styles. Blakeman suggests a few—Federal, Regency,Victorian and Art Nouveau. She also points out that decorativemetalwork sometimes distinguishes a desk. “We currently havesigned Ormolu on desks in the Louis XVI style. Ormolu metalornamentation began in the 18th century and is often found inthe shape of scrolls, leaves and faces.”

When shopping for antique furniture, Westergaard points out that the nuances of terminology are important. A “period”piece is one that was actually made in the specified timeframe. For example, a Louis XV period table was made when LouisXV actually sat on the throne of France. A piece of furniture is called “in the style of” when it uses the same design andmaterials of a particular period, but was made after the era had expired. Further, it can be called an antique if it has the prop-er age. For example, a writing desk made of walnut with curved legs can be in the style of Louis XV and also an antique if itwas made, say, 50 years after Louis XV’s death. A third category is a “reproduction,” which is a piece of furniture that has thelines of a particular design era, but was made in a factory. Westergaard says, “These pieces are made very exactly. There is noevidence of hand quality.”
Education is your best friend when purchasing antiques. “It costs nothing to go into a store filled with really fine things.Talk to good dealers and people with good reputations. Your pleasure in your purchase will only increase with how much youknow about it and the time you took to learn more,” Westergaard encourages.
LEFT: At The Antique Pavilion,a parquetry and inlaid writingtable with a single drawer.Louis XVI style, France, circamid-19th century.
From the Front Lines:The handwrittenvs. digital warsStores and advertisements arefilled with the latest digital widget, but do not discount the impact ofa simple handwritten note or let-ter. In fact, some business coachesare saying that handwriting, evenon the envelope, is a good way toget noticed these days.
A handwritten letter has severaladvantages. It is tactile and perma-nent. It shows the writer caredenough to spend time and energycrafting something personal. Andyou know it’s personal since ahandwritten note cannot be mass-produced.
So, whether it is for business, loveor pleasure, consider handwritingan old-fashioned letter. Whoknows? You may be remembered(and chosen) because you cameup with something new.

The Value of LettersNo one will deny that letters have sentimental value—but sometimesthey have monetary value as well. In 1999, the 14 love letters that thereclusive author J.D. Salinger wrote to Joyce Maynard sold at aSotheby’s auction for $156,000.
In a less rarified vein, Crane & Co.—the fine stationery company that isowned by the seventh generation of the same family, making it a sort ofantique itself—recently ran a contest celebrating handwritten letters. Insharing their personal letters, participants made comments such as, “Ihave every single letter my husband has ever sent me since we begandating 25 years ago” and “After he died I slept with it [the letter] foldedunder my pillow for years. This is the only letter my father ever wrote tome and I have saved it lovingly for 17 years." You really can’t put a pricetag on something like that.

TRU BLUFor more than 35 years, Texas City resident Blu Shields has successfully owned andoperated Galveston Service Company, offering a wide variety of construction andremodeling services to many satisfied area homeowners. With a vision to changethe philosophy of custom homebuilding, his ultimate challenge is to unite allbuilders as one while bringing together all county and city emergency managementteams so that communities throughout the entire United States can be rebuilt.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, Blu formed Blu Shields Construction as a divi-sion of Galveston Service Company and Energy Solution Homes to specialize in thenew construction of raised-floor homes ideally suited to our coastal community. Weare the only builder in this part of the country building highly energy efficienthomes (without solar or wind generated power) that produce very low electric bills. In addition, our affordable, high quality homes are typically completed in 30 to 45days, are built below the average construction cost, and meet ADA (Americans withDisabilities Act) standards for accessible design. We offer a selection of 15 basicfloor plans, any of which can easily be customized as you wish. Blu himself is inti-mately involved in the construction of every home from start to finish and standstrue to his word, accompanied by a solid shake of your hand.
Drawing on our expertise as time and materials specialists, Blu ShieldsConstruction is able to complete a new home from ground-breaking to move-in insignificantly less time than other builders. We use our own crews exclusively, stackthe trades to enable functions that are typically done separately to instead be com-pleted concurrently, and have been building green long before the practice becamepopular.

Theme: What’s unique about the Marburger Farm Antique Show? Just abouteverything. First, the merchandise is cutting-edge, fusing quality with hip.Second, the show attracts an abundance of younger shoppers. For the upcom-ing spring show, we’ve noticed that the dealers at Marburger Farm are gettingyounger too.
At age 29, Dakota Pratt will come from Los Angeles for his fourth year at thetwice-yearly Marburger Farm Antique Show. Coming with him will be thefolk art and furniture that he creates from antique tractor springs, vintage bot-tle caps and other reclaimed industrial fragments.
Exhibitor Kim Hoegger of Kim Hoegger HOME in Dallas will bring gardenantiques, including architectural concrete planters and statues, as well as heryounger perspective on the appeal of antiques. “I don’t buy an antique becauseit’s 18th or 19th century,” she says. “I buy it because it appeals to me andbecause I love it and I know my customers are going to love it. I think thatyounger dealers focus on the look of something, not the history. If it is beauti-ful and useful and clients can appreciate it for being gorgeous—that’s enoughfor me.”
Dealer Brandon Nelson of Three Oaks, Michigan agrees. “I’m all over themap in terms of periods. I respond to things visually and viscerally. While I’llbring some fabulous production pieces, I’m especially drawn to one-of-a-kind,out-of-step pieces. For the spring show, Nelson will offer a primitive carvedmaple head, about 100 years old, with, he says, “a stunning presence.” Hisbooth will include industrial antiques, advertising signs, architectural salvageand Americana mixed with mid-century modern.

“I’d Turn Back If I Were You”, the sign warned as Dorothyand her crew approached the haunted forest and the witchescastle. And that's my advice to anyone who approaches a
garden project without a well thought out plan. It's not a hollowadmonition because a good garden without a good plan is impossible.

Mark Twain said, “The secret of getting ahead isgetting started. The secret of getting started isbreaking your complex overwhelming tasks into
small manageable ones, then starting on the first one.”
Your first task after you have found the perfect gardendesigner is the design phase. It's your blueprint for gettingstarted with your project and culminates with the plandrawing.
Le Corbusier, the famous architect and designer whodedicated himself to providing better living conditions forpeople said "Space, light and order - those are the thingsthat men need just as much as they need bread or a place tosleep." The design phase is all about order and space plan-ning and is vital to getting a project off to the right startand keeping it on track. When done properly, it saves every-one time, money and frustration and provides moreoptions. For instance if you want to install in phases thenit's absolutely necessary.
Producing a great garden plan requires much thoughtand planning and all the thinking takes place during thedesign phase. A good garden designer won't let you rushthrough it. Because there are many more aspects to gardendesign than most people realize, the possibilities are endless.Arbors, gazebos, pergolas, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, landscape lighting, retaining walls, pools, spas, pathways, putting greens, fire features, irrigation and drainage, trellis-es, awnings, and fencing, are just the beginning of youroptions when it comes to an outdoor garden room.
The garden plan is the place to record and organize allof your thoughts wishes and dreams. The garden designeruses the plan to easily convey his ideas to the client as wellas to predict the project cost. That's the all important pur-pose of the plan drawing. But it's only the tip of the ice-berg. Always drawn to scale, the plan drawing illustratesthe finished product complete with architecture, hardscap-ing, flora and fauna. In the hands of a capable artist, therendered plan is, in and of itself, a work of art.
Most people realize that your garden is an extension ofyour home and it reflects your personality. But what theydon't realize is that when it's done properly, with the helpof a seasoned professional to guide you and make certain allaspects of the plan are thought through then executed cor-rectly, your garden or garden room will appeal to anyoneincluding the next owner - regardless of the style. That notonly makes your new garden room a tangible investment -according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, the proper landscaping can add 20 percent or more to ahome's resale value - but a place where you'll want to spend
as much, or more time, than your indoors. If your goal is abeautiful garden room, then solid garden plans, and theservices of a talented garden designer, are definitely worththe investment and time they require.
A garden designer is someone who enjoys and under-stands the merging of art and science into a display of beau-ty that relates to the buildings, with nature and that func-tions as intended. Form always follows function and thedesigner uses his creativity to develop a harmonious and aes-thetically peaceful area. In other words, a living breathingfunctioning work of art that not only provides joy but alsocontributes to our blue planet by helping to clean the air webreathe among other benefits. Find one who is comfortableworking with every different style imaginable.
Hiring a garden designer who is also a garden contrac-tor as well as a care provider is a smart consideration. Usingone professional team for your project from start to finishhas advantages. Design professionals experienced in con-struction and garden care develop designs that are practical.Contractors who are sensitive to design are better builders. And consider this: Once your project is complete who bet-ter to care for your garden then they who designed, builtand know it best?
Take all the time you need to seek out the very bestdesign professionals and contractors and experiment withseveral layouts or schematics until you find the one that isjust right for you. Ask to look at your designers body ofwork usually in the form of photographs. Past, current andfuture projects can be examined. Gardeners love to sharetheir fruits of their labor with others and the more of theirwork that you see the better the decisions you will make.Unearth the exact materials you want and don't over lookthe tiniest of details as they will bring you the most pleasureand joy, long after your garden is finished.
Dorothy found her way to Oz because she had a goodplan - follow the yellow brick road. Did she encounter pit-falls along the way? Plenty. Did she overcome them? Yes andyou will too with an experienced professional as navigatorand a garden plan as roadmap. Trust the judgment of thedesigner that you carefully chose and lastly, don't forget tohave fun along the way. Producing then executing the gar-den plan should not wreak emotional havoc. Be certain torelax along the way and enjoy every last minute. It's themost important part. It's the most important part.

Your landscape should complement the style of your home. Forexample, a stately stone home with Palladian arches cries out fora formal garden with closely clipped shrubs, trimmed trees and
well-tended lawns. A low-slung mid-century ranchhouse looks swell withexotic grasses as accents or perhaps a Japanese Zen garden for ambience.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or redoing a landscape, consider hiring a professional designer for the master plan.Google “landscape designers + Houston” or check the YellowPages for landscape designers and look for members who usethe initials “ASLA” behind their names, which means they aremembers of and meet the professional standards of theAmerican Society of Landscape Designers. Also, many nurseriesand plant retailers employ designers who can design and imple-ment an overall scheme for you. Ask to see designers’ portfolios
and/or Web sites to see if their work is a fit for what you want.Choose a style that’s sustainable for the way you and your
family live. If you want a manicured formal garden but aren’twilling to hire professional landscape help and can’t do it your-self, you won’t be able to achieve the look you want.
But when your landscape and house do blend in harmony— and you can’t imagine one without the other — you haveadded enormous value to your home and pleasure to your soul. Here are some types of landscapes to consider.

Never ask gardeners to list their favorite plants unless you’reloaded with NoDoz or have a strong cup of Joe within reach. After all, we’re gardeners, we like plants, not just a few — lots of
them. And, we tend to treat them like children, highlighting their attrib-utes while downplaying their shortcomings.
Terrific Plants forHouston Landscapes2299
After coming out of one of the worst winters in recentmemory, one in which we experienced a number of hard freezesand a dusting of snow, it may, however, be an appropriate timeto share a few outstanding performers for Houston area gar-dens, in case you need to make some spring replacements.
TREESLACEBARK ELM
Ulmas parvifoliaLacebark Elm is a deciduousshade tree with a rounded crownthat grows 40 to 50 feet high. Itis relatively fast growing, but isstill a strong tree, unlike Ashesand Tallows. Its fine foliage provides a filtered shade allowingfor good growing conditions beneath it, unlike many Oaks andMagnolias. The bark peels in large flakes in a mosaic pattern, exposing a cinnamon-coloredunderbark.
ALMOND VERBENA
Aloysia virgataAlmond Verbena is a semi-ever-green tree with an uprightgrowth habit to 15 feet. It pro-
duces highly fragrant, delicate flowers from spring through fall, and even into winter if temperatures are mild. In addition tofilling the garden with their heavenly scent, the white flowerspikes attract butterflies. Its gray-green foliage has a fine textureand the tree thrives in full sun but can adapt to partial shade.
KUMQUAT
Fortunella spp.We haven’t found a citrus we don’tlike, because there is nothing aboutthem not to like. Citrus are smallevergreen trees, usually 15 to 20feet tall, perfectly suited as screenor shade trees in the urban garden.Intensely fragrant flowers appear inspring and early summer and sporadically throughout the year. They attract the Giant Swallowtail butterfly, provide an excel-lent habitat for songbirds, and produce an abundance ofmouth-watering fruit loaded with vitamins and antioxidants.Unlike other fruit trees, citrus do not require a full day of sun.Kumquats are particularly well suited for lazy gardeners as theyare the hardiest of the citrus, surviving temperatures in theteens. They are also smaller than most citrus so are easily grownin containers. The fruit of kumquats are small and prolific, which makes the tree highly ornamental as it remains on thetree months after ripening.

PINEAPPLE GUAVA
Feijoa sellowianaPineapple Guava is an evergreenshrub that I prefer to use as asmall, usually to 15 feet, multi-trunked or single trunk tree. It hasbeautiful blue-green foliage that issilvery underneath. Appearing inlate spring, the flowers are quiteexotic with fleshy white petals that are edible and prominentfuchsia stamens. The edible fruit is egg-shaped with waxy gray-green skin, a juicy greenish-white pulp and a tropical taste.
VITEX
Vitex agnes-castusVitex, like Crape Myrtle, is a largeshrub, 15 to 20 feet tall, that isusually grown as a multi-trunkedtree. Its aromatic foliage is grey-green with a lighter underside andresembles that of a Marijuanaplant. Thankfully, law enforcementagencies can tell the difference. The violet to dark purple, fra-grant flowers appear in cycles of striking displays from latespring to fall.
SHRUBSPRIDE OF BARBADOS
Caesalpinia pulcherimaPride of Barbados is a root hardy, subtropical, multi-stemmedshrub that grows 4 to 6 feet. During hot summer months it istopped with large panicles of bright orange and yellow that are8 to 10 inches tall and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. This Texas SuperStar shrub needs good drainage and full sun.
DWARF BOTTLEBRUSH
Callistemon citrinus 'Little John'This dense, mounding evergreenshrub has aromatic foliage thatprovides a unique blue-green colorto the garden. From summer tofall, tips of the stiff branches arecovered with flower terminals thathave long crimson colored stamensgiving them that "bottlebrush" look. It grows to a height of 3feet, which makes it ideal for the urban garden. It performs bestin full sun.
BUTTERFLY BUSH
Buddleia davidii Butterfly Bush not only attractsbutterflies and hummingbirds, butalso fills the garden with a cleanfresh scent. It is a large shrub that
grows 4 to 6 feet tall with gray-green foliage. There are manycultivars that provide a myriad of bloom colors throughout thesummer, from white to purple, pink, blues and red. My favoriteis Lochinch which is lavender blue with an orange center.Butterfly bush likes full sun and a well-drained soil and is rela-tively drought-tolerant.
PROSTRATE PLUM YEW
Cephalotaxus harringtonia'Prostrata'Prostrate Plum Yew is an evergreenshrub that grows 3 feet tall with a5 foot spread and forms a lowmound of gracefully archingbranches. It’s a slow grower thatrequires little if any pruning, mak-ing it ideal for the small garden. The needle-like, dark greenfoliage prefers light to moderate shade and gives it a woodsyfern-like texture.
ROSESPERLE D’OR
Rosa sp. ‘Perle d’OrPerle d’Or is a peach colored Polyantha rose that grows 3 to 4feet. This repeat bloomer has a double flower that is highly fra-grant. In 2007 it was named “EarthKind Rose of the Year.”EarthKind Roses are put through rigorous testing before beingdeemed environmentally responsible plants for the use in Texaslandscapes.
BELINDA’S DREAM
Rosa x ‘Belinda’s DreamBelinda’s Dream, the first rose tobe become a Texas SuperStar, isalso designated as an EarthKindrose. Its fragrant double pinkflower has the classic Hybrid Teaform but the shrub displays thecharacteristics of an antique rose— tough, hardy, pest and disease free. It grows 4 to 5 feet talland it is flush with flowers from spring through fall.
BUFF BEAUTY
Rosa sp. ‘Buff Beauty’Buff Beauty is a Hybrid Musk that grows 6 to 8 feet or taller iftrained as a climber. The fragrant flowers are double, apricotcolored and large —3 to 4 inchesacross. It blooms spring throughfall.
JEANNE D’ARC
Rosa sp. ‘Jeanne d’Arc’Jeanne d’Arc is a Noisette rose thatgrows 6 to 8 feet and is easily

trained as a pillar or climbing rose. The small white doubleflower is highly fragrant and appears prolifically spring throughfall and also creates a delightful display of fruit, called hips.Jeanne d’Arc tolerates a little more shade than most roses.
GRASSESRUBY GRASS
Melinus nerviglumisRuby Grass is a low growing, 18to 24 inches, which makes itperfectly sized for the small gar-den. It has fine textured blue-green foliage and pink flowersthat create fluffy, 8 to 12 inchplumes throughout the summer. It demands good drainage tothrive in our humid summer climates.
CASSIAN FOUNTAIN GRASS
Pennisetum alopecuriodes ‘Cassian’A fine fit for the urban garden at12 to 18 inches high, CassianFountain Grass has fine texturedfoliage. Its compact silver-tanfoxtail flowers mature to creamytan. They stand 6 to 12 inchesabove the foliage and appearthroughout the summer. Like most grasses, it requires gooddrainage.
GULF COAST MUHLY
Muhlenbergia capillarisThis is a native grass that is 24to 36 inches tall and can be seengrowing in fields not far fromtown. When driving countryroads in late summer, the fieldsare evident by the purple cloudsthat appear to float above them.It is a very fine textured grass with bluish-green foliage andfeathery pink flower panicles that stand 12 inches above foliage.
MISCANTHUS MORNING LIGHT
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’This ornamental grass stands 3 to 4 feet tall with upright arch-ing foliage. The margins of the fine textured leaf are clear whitegiving it an all day appearance of shimmering morning light. Itsreddish bronze flowers, standing1 to 2 feet above the foliage anddry to a fluffy cream color.
GROUNDCOVERSPINK BUTTONS
Polygonum ‘Pink Buttons’This perennial groundcover
never gets more than 2 or 3 inches tall. Pink Buttons forms amat of small rounded green-burgundy foliage and its pink but-ton flowers appear continuously from spring to fall. It toleratesfiltered shade through full sun. If winters are mild it remainsevergreen with its burgundy color intensifying.
CATLIN’S GIANT AJUGA
Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant'This hardy groundcover grows toabout 12 inches and quicklyspreads to create a mat of greenleaves with purple and bronzehighlights. Purple flower spikes riseabove the foliage in May. Its broadleaves provide a course texture in contrast to most fine-texturedgroundcovers. It prefers partial shade, but will tolerate somesun.
GREEN ICE ROSE
Rosa sp. ‘Green Ice’Green Ice is a miniature rose grow-ing 12 to 18 inches. Its tight pinkbuds open a pale pink to whiteand then take on a cast of green. The double white flowers are light-ly fragrant and appear springthrough fall. Its petite, dark green leaves give it a fine texture.
BLUE PRINCESS VERBENA
Verbena sp. ‘Blue Princess’This Verbena has been named aTexas Superstar. It is a hardyperennial groundcover growing to12 inches. Lavender blue flat clus-ters, 2 to 3 inches across, appearspring to fall. Blue Princess prefersfull sun, but will tolerate someshade. It tends to be a butterfly magnet.
VINESPASSION VINE
Passiflora x IncenseThis vine is a must have for but-terfly lovers. It is a major hostplant for the Gulf Fritillary butter-fly. Its exotic blooms are deep pur-ple and appear spring through fall,There are passion vine varieties whose flowers are red, white andlavender, but my favorite is the dark purple for the intense fra-grance not found in other varieties.
BLEEDING HEART VINE

crimson flowers emerge from purewhite, bell-shaped calyces fromspring to fall. As the flowers fadethe calyces turn from pure whiteto lavender, adding anotherdimension to the bloom. Thedeep emerald green foliage is 3 to4 inches long. The vine toleratesfull sun to a surprising amount ofshade and attracts butterflies.
POTATO VINE
Solanum seaforthianum (Blue Potato Vine)Solanum jasminoides ‘Album’ (White Potato Vine)These semi-evergreen vines have 1 inch showy clusters of blueor white flowers that appear spring through fall. The blue flow-ers produce a red berry and the white flowers produce a yellowberry. The 2 inch lance-shaped leaves are a glossy dark green. The vine tolerates full sun and a fair amount of shade.
RANGOON CREEPER
Quisqualis indicaThis lush fast growing vine is evergreen in mild winters, butwill drop foliage when temperatures reach 32°. Foliage is 4 to 5inches long and bright green in color. It produces very fragranttubular flower clusters late spring through fall. The flowersemerge white, and then turn pink and ultimately red. RangoonCreeper is a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies.
PERENNIALSPURPLE CONEFLOWER
Echinacea pallidaThis tough and handsome nativeis a vigorous perennial, 2 to 3 feettall, with deep green foliage.Purple daisy-like flowers with aniridescent red-orange, coned cen-ter appear late spring through fall.It is an excellent cut flower with prickly seed heads that addinterest to dried arrangements. Edible flower petals can addvisual appeal to salads or garnishes and the plant is popularlybelieved to stimulate the immune system.
RUDBECKIA GOLDSTURM
Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’Another tough, traffic-stoppingperennial, Rudbeckia Goldsturmgrows 18 to 24 inches tall and iscommonly called Black-eyedSusan. Most Rudbeckia species, many of which are also calledBlack-eyed Susan, are biennial, but Goldsturm is a true perennial variety, getting better everyyear. The flowers are 3 inch, golden-yellow black-eyed daisies
that appear summer through fall, although mine blooms best inthe dead of winter when it receives better sun. If yours bloombest in the warm season, do not deadhead the flowers late in theseason as the persistent center cones add winter interest and theseeds provide a source of food for small birds. This perennialalso attracts butterflies.
PLUMBAGO
Plumbago auriculataThis Texas SuperStar perennial grows 3 to 4 feet, but will climbseveral feet higher given support. It loves our hot humid sum-mers and is relatively drought tolerant. The fine textured foliageis bright green and forms a dense clump. The 2 inch flowerclusters appear continuously spring through frost, and depend-ing on variety, are shades of sky blue or white. Although itblooms best in full sun, Plumbago can take considerable shadeand bloom heavily with a better foliage color. Butterflies lovePlumbago and its dense growth habit gives cover to many birdspecies.
BLACK AND BLUE SALVIA
Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue’Another perennial sure to attractbutterflies and hummingbirds,Black and Blue Salvia is a coursetextured plant growing 3 to 4 feet.Large, 6 to 8 inch panicles of elec-tric blue flowers and black sepalsappear on black stems from springthrough fall. The large leaves are bright green and emit a lightanise scent when brushed, making it often referred to as AniseSalvia.

Water is essential for life. We thirst. We sweat. And the cycle repeats.
Our bodies are comprised of approximately 70 percent water– the same percentage of water that covers the earth’s surface.Inherently we know that water is a source of life and renewal;we are drawn to it.
Adding a fountain to your landscape brings both new vitalityand soothing comfort. Landscape Architect Mark McKinnonstrives to create residential gardens that are healing gardens.“Using all the elements of nature grounds us and restores us andhelps us cope with daily stresses,” says McKinnon. “We aredelighted by the sight of water – it encourages us to take a fewquiet moments.”
STYLE DECISIONS
A minimalist urn set atop a bed of rocks – known as a disap-pearing fountain – may work well with a modern townhome. The upright lines and small footprint mimic the style of thehome and won’t hog a courtyard or petite green space. Largeryards are great candidates for fountains that cover more ground.
“As a landscape architect, I tend to make the fountainrelate to the architecture of the house or the client’s inte-rior style, referring to specific formal or informal elements

on the site,” says McKinnon. “I also consider the axialrelationship to the house, the style of the garden andhouse.”
Look at photos of famous fountain to help deter-mine your fountain’s style. Tim Turner of WindsweptLandscape Studios draws inspiration from iconicEuropean fountains surrounding such grand places asVersailles and Villa D’ Este. “It’s like studying balletbefore you can perform contemporary dance,” saysTurner. “You have to study the classics to be able to cre-ate something modern.”
McKinnon strives to connect the fountain with itssurroundings by utilizing materials, such as brick andstone, that are the same or similar to the site and thencomplementing them with interesting shapes and tex-tures. Architectural design options include a stone wallwith a subtle spout of water falling into a square pool, apillar that overflows into a round pool, a series ofspouts along a low wall with a semicircular collectionbasin.

a dramatic style statement. Choose a Greek or Italianfigure for a traditional and formal look, or opt forsomething more casual and whimsical. “Think outsidethe box and have fun with the design,” says Welch. “Youcan use a washtub and a watering can, or even go toTractor Supply or any feed store for container ideas!”
THINGS TO CONSIDER
“We create what is appropriate on a residential scale, guiding clients towards sustainable, easily maintainedfountains,” says McKinnon. “You don’t want it tobecome abandoned or forgotten because of issues likewater clarity, leaf debris or mosquitoes.”
Beverly Welch of The Arbor Gate advises homeown-ers to think carefully about location. “You don’t neces-sarily want to put it out front,” she says. “Place it whereyou will spend plenty of time and get the maximumenjoyment out of it.”
Choose a size that is in proportion to your landscapearea – it’s not a good idea to place a huge three-tieredItalian fountain in a tiny courtyard. Welch also says it’swise to account for wind, especially when a fountain

will have a significant amount of drop (vertical fallof water), since you don’t want to lose too muchwater.
“It’s important to think about the volume ofwater needed to produce the desired sound,” saysTurner. “This will dictate the scale and dimen-sions. Also think about minimizing evaporationand/or water waste (splash over).”
“Think about how much maintenance and timethe fountain will require and make it practical foryour lifestyle and schedule,” says Welch. “It’skinda like getting a puppy.”
NATURAL ELEMENTS
Place plants around your fountain that are appro-priate for the soil conditions and sun exposure.“Be sure the plants you place near you fountainlike to have their feet wet – they should love mois-ture,” says Turner.

Welch recommends plants that naturally grow nearwater, such as Canna lilies, reeds, rushes, cattails, horse-tails and native pitcher plants. She also suggests alocasia(elephant ears) for a tropical touch and bamboo forJapanese look.
In addition to introducing the soothing sight andsound of moving water, installing a fountain drawswildlife, such as birds and butterflies and dragonflies toyour landscape. Friends and neighbors may complimentyou on your finished fountain, but nature’s visitors willbecome ardent admirers of your water feature, as well.

Hi. My name is Ke Ke,and I’ve been living at the Houston
SPCA since September. I’m a female
Labrador and Chinese Shar-Pei mix
who’s full of energy and willing to
learn and please my humans. My previous owners brought me
to the shelter because they thought I was too big. The nerve!
Just look at my sleek body and you can see I’m the normal
size for my breed(s). I weigh exactly 31 pounds and the folks
at the shelter say I’m the sweetest, kindest dog around. I’m 4
years old, love kids and cats, but turns out cats just don't
reciprocate my affection. I’d do best in a home without cats
and a with a family who will spend time showing me lots of
love and attention. I am housetrained, respond when called
and understand "sit" and "stay." I’m ready to go home today,
so come visit me and ask for my ID# A07622033 at
