How are migraines different than headaches?Headaches vary quite a bit in severity, duration, and pain level. A hangover headache, for example typically lasts a few hours, whereas the length of headaches that are a part of an illness might be dependent on how long that illness has stuck around.

It is really important to identify the type of headache you have so you can get the right sort of treatment and advice. A headache can be the result of a whole variety of factors such as head injuries, lack of sleep, withdrawal from drugs (like caffeine!) even poor posture!

Migraines Explained

Page 4: How are migraines different than headaches?

| 4

Migraines are an entirely different beastA migraine can cause intense pain (often pulsating / throbbing), usually on just one side of the head. It’s often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, extreme fatigue, or sensitivity to light and sound.

Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days (!) and can be so severe that the pain is disabling to the point of being bedridden.

Symptoms known as “aura” sometimes occur with the headache. These can include flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling on one side of the face or in your arm or leg. Sometimes aura occurs as a warning sign before the migraine really hits you. Migraines usually worsen with physical activity.

Those who are predisposed to migraines often get them as a result of exposure to certain “triggers”. These triggers vary from person to person, but common ones include:

• Fluorescent lights• Hormonal Changes• Atmospheric Pressure Changes• Processed Foods• Lack of Sleep• Smoke

Which begs the question: What causes migraines?

What Causes Migraines? In truth, we don’t really know for sure, but it’s a problem millions of us deal with. More than 4

million adults experience chronic daily migraines – with at least 15 migraine days per month.[2]

Many people that will answer this question by referring to the old vasodilation theory (widening of blood cells in the brain) as the cause for most migraines.

Oxford University clearly disproved this.[1]

Migraines are still very perplexing to researchers. We do know some things that cause them, but are still unsure why these things cause migraines.

For example: We know that weather changes can cause migraines.

Barometric pressure is the method scientists use to measure the atmospheric pressure or weight of the air. A barometer is used to identify the pressure, and the barometric reading is helpful in forecasting incoming weather changes. When barometers change quickly, migraines often follow. But why? We only have theories and no definitive answer.

This is a common theme among the causes of migraines. We know they are triggers - but can’t say why.

Page 5: How are migraines different than headaches?

But not ALL hope is lost. We have a few general guidelines and theories that you can use as base knowledge in your fight against migraines, however:

• Migraines are a familial, neurologic issue and your genetics will largely determine if you get them or not. A child who has one parent with migraines has a 50% chance of inheriting it, and if both parents have migraine, the chances rise to 75%.[2]

• Hormonal changes contribute to migraines. More severe and more frequent attacks often result from fluctuations in estrogen levels.[2]

• Stress contributes to migraines (this can be lack of sleep, anxiety, inflammation, alcohol consumption, dehydration, etc).

• There is no “cure”, but like other diseases there are preventative medicines and lifestyle changes that can have great results.

In short:

Things that hurt the body (ANY stress), lead to migraines. If you are genetically predisposed to migraines then, seek medicine and make lifestyle changes. These lifestyle changes can be made with the help of our “Migraine Trigger Tracker”.

Tracking your Triggers:We will get to the optimal diets and supplements to reduce migraines - but first, triggers!

Triggers are what lead to your migraines and there are common ones, but they can drastically vary from person to person.

For example - Fasting or skipping a meal, might give me a crazy migraine (it does!), but it might just give you a rumbling stomach.

This is where the importance of tracking your triggers cannot be understated. How can you know that aged cheese has a 60% chance of giving you a migraine? Especially because that cheese probably went along with wine, and maybe you stayed up a bit late too. How can you tell which 3 of those variables contributed the most (or least) to your migraine?

You can’t!

That’s why you have GOT to track these things! You could eliminate your migraines altogether if you find out what is directly causing them. I know it sounds like a pain, but we created a resource that will make it a breeze!

Like the great business mind Peter Drucker once said, “What gets measured, get managed”.

This is how we have to treat migraines. Once we start inputting our “random” data into the Migraine Trigger Tracker - we will start to get a clear picture as to what specific thing cause is causing our migraines.

Seriously, click here to read the instructions and learn how it will spit out actionable data for you to try in real life. You will then be able to see how these lifestyle changes affect your migraines.

Magnesium’s Role in Fighting Migraines:Significant research has shown that people with migraines often have lower levels of magnesium

than those without them. One study[3] actually found that regular intake of magnesium reduced the frequency of migraine attacks by 41.6 percent! Other research[4] has

shown that taking daily magnesium supplements can be effective at preventing menstrual-related migraines.

Because magnesium is a natural element and is necessary for our health, it may be a safe migraine treatment for you. This is

especially true when compared to migraine medications, which can come with severe side effects. There is no 100% proven and 100% side-effect-free solution to

migraines, but magnesium is the closest solution on both of these fronts that we have today.

Fighting Against Migraines

Diet for MigrainesThese are the general foods, drinks, and eating habits that you want to avoid while optimizing your diet for the elimination of migraines. Again, these are just common triggers, they might not get a reaction out of you specifically. So please - Use the Trigger Tracker to find out!

Cheese: Protein rich foods like cheese often contain large doses of tyramine as they age. This natural compound is a common trigger for migraines. Certain cheeses are terrible offenders - stay away from these:

• Brie• Blue Cheese• Feta• Mozzarella (dang!)• Muenster• Parmesan• Swiss

Additives:

MSG • Watch out for this one, it is infamous for sparking migraines. Not only that, but it can also be hard to detect. Big food companies know that consumers shun MSG so they try to hide it. Look out for “all natural preservatives” and “hydrolyzed protein”. Sneaky!

Nitrites and Nitrates • These chemicals are found in processed meats like hot dogs, bacon, lunch meats, etc.

Aspartame • We aren’t sure why this causes headaches (again!), but it certainly does. I think it has something to do with the fact that it is 150x sweeter than sugar. It is best to avoid this if you can. Chewing gum and diet soda are the common offenders, but also be wary of any “sugar free” food that is also sweet. Chances are they are replacing sugar with

Aspartame.

Alcohol • Of course we all know that alcohol can lead to some brutal headaches. Often accompanied by the “brown bottle flu”. These go way beyond your normal hangovers.

Depending on your sensitivity, just 1 drink can be enough to trigger your migraine the next day.

I had to implement this very sad rule recently:

“No Red Wine”

Skipping Meals • As a good rule of thumb you want to keep your blood sugar levels even. No big spikes, no big drops.

Skipping meals is obviously not conducive to this. It helps to carry emergency snacks with you. Something portable and nutritious, like nuts or fruit.

Dehydration • This is another big one. Monitor your urine color and if it ever gets too yellow - make it a point to force yourself to drink some water.

Page 8: How are migraines different than headaches?

| 8

Processed Foods • These are so difficult to avoid, but oh so important to cut out. It’s not like you have to drop them 100% out of your diet, but be very aware that every time you consume processed foods that your migraine threshold is in jeopardy.

These are great guidelines to follow, but you may experience varied results. So you will have to experiment for yourself, but they are also rooted in science so tread lightly.

Sure, you may get away with having a diet soda every now and then without a migraine, but add too many triggers together all at once and you are putting yourself in a bad spot.

Pizza is a good example of a migraine combo overload!• Processed meats• Additives galore• Aged cheese• Sugary tomato paste

Supplements for MigrainesLavender • There is a small but significant study[5] that shows promise for lavender. The study compared a lavender group to a placebo group. The two groups recorded their symptoms over 2 hours from the point that their migraine attack started.

• Lavender Group: 71% of the participants found that thier symptoms were resolved or partially resolved.

• Placebo Group: 47% of the participants reported some improvement.

Sweet Marjoram • This essential oil is known to dilate capillaries which allows blood to flow freely, which can be a big relief when you have a pounding headache.

Peppermint • Further investigation shows the possibility of peppermint oil as a headache and migraine aid for decades. A 2015 study[6] of essential oils and aromatherapy showed that peppermint oil may work well for headaches. This, along with a study from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health[7], suggests that peppermint oil works for tension headaches and other headaches.

Rosemary and Basal • These two essential oils attack root causes of many migraines - stress and muscle tension/joint pain[8].

It also can also be a general pain reliever which can be oh so helpful when a nasty migraine hits.

About half of peppermint is menthol. One study[9] found that a topical gel with 6 percent menthol

decreased pain intensity over a 2 hour hour period after the migraine hit a participant.

Magnesium • A study published in the journal Cephalalgia tested the amount of migraine attacks that occured over a

period of 12 weeks. It found a reduction of migraine attacks of 41.6% for magnesium takers, and a reduction of 15.8% for the placebo group.

That is a really hefty difference!

This is why we created our Seven Minerals Migraine and Headache Spray

Environment for MigrainesAs touched on earlier in our weather example - migraines can be triggered by your environment, so it is really important you manage it properly.

But it’s not just weather changes - it is everything!

This means…

• Odors: Perfume is a big one! Harsh chemicals can also trigger your migraines.• Pollution: Smog and cigarette smoke really get me!• Lights: Fluorescents and computer screens are the main perpetrators• High Altitude: Hiking, or anything else where you ascend/ descend altitude quickly.• Travel: Jet lag, and the stresses of travel in general give people a lot of trouble.• Even patterns like harsh zig zags or stripes (think optical illusion books).

It can be a lot to keep track of. That is why we created the Migraine Trigger Tracker to help you keep track of everything. It is a lifesaver for those who are serious about getting rid of their migraines and headaches!

Page 10: How are migraines different than headaches?

| 10

Tracking your triggers is the best way to take control in the fight against migraines. Here is a quick rundown of how it works:

1. Record your triggers daily in a diary or calendar (We suggest using the Seven Minerals Migraine Trigger Tracker!)

2. Each month look back on your records to make observations and hypothesize about what your triggers actually are. Which ones are the worst offenders? Which days do you most often get migraines?

3. Make the change that the data is screaming at you to make! This is the hard part, but if you stick to it - your migraines will decrease in frequency and intensity.

4. Stay consistent. Make sure you keep recording your triggers daily.5. Enjoy the benefits that come naturally as you gain an ever increasing awareness of your

triggers.

This all sounds fine and dandy, but here is the biggest problem with trigger tracking... It’s HARD!

Making any new habit is very difficult. Consistently doing anything is hard. Putting in the effort to remember what triggers you were exposed that day is hard! This is not the easy way to deal with migraines, but it is an actual solution. With enough diligence people have gone as far as erasing migraines from their lives by doing this.

Since it is so difficult we decided to create our own proprietary Migraine Trigger Tracker! It is in an easy to use Excel file, that can be edited quickly each day because we include all sorts of time saving features like a list of the most popular migraine triggers that you can choose from! This makes remembering which triggers you tripped much easier! You can also add your own triggers as well if you choose.

This is as easy as trigger tracking gets!

As you can see, your body and magnesium have a powerful relationship. With powerful results sometimes comes powerful reactions. Here’s the most common side effects of magnesium, why they happen, and how you can avoid them.

Stomach and Digestional Pain:

When taken orally, magnesium can wreak havoc on your digestive system.

Severe diarrhea, abdominal cramping and nausea can result from magnesium producing osmotic activity in your intestines and colon. Usually this happens when you take a high dose of magnesium, and often it is as a result of oral supplementation.

Taking a topical magnesium supplement, like Seven Minerals Migraine Relief Spray can be an effective method to supplement magnesium and avoid gastrointestinal discomfort, as they contain a concentrated amount of magnesium and are not processed by the stomach or intestines.

Stinging:

There is a very close relationship between low levels of magnesium in the body and the sting caused by magnesium oil.

Usually, people who experience a burning sensation during or after applying magnesium spray usually think that their body is sensitive to magnesium oil. However, it may be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Magnesium oil acts as the vasodilator that relaxes muscle cells and increases blood flow in capillaries, which can cause a stinging sensation. Usually, we find that the greater the deficiency is, the more severe the sensation.

The discomfort will slowly fade after a week or two of regular application.

If you experience stinging, here are some ways to decrease it.

People suffering from kidney failure or other kidney disorders should not take magnesium supplements.

People suffering from heart issues must consult their doctor before using any magnesium products.

People who have excessively sensitive skin should not use magnesium supplements.

Magnesium Common Side Effects:

People Who Should Not Take Magnesium:
