How Avoid Killing Your Business
Scott Cathcart
Creating a company that will thriveon sustainability is a goal that everyentrepreneur should have. But, whileon the pursuit of sustainability many
entrepreneurs counteract theirgrowth with little unnoticeablethings that seem to add up andhinder necessary growth and
attainable success.
Although it can be argued that the littlethings don’t matter, they will add up andeventually have a large impact. It is up toyou to decide if it will be a good impact or
a harmful one. Here are 3 small butpowerful ways to avoid killing your
business.
Don’t Be aPerfectionist
Being a perfectionist can be a verysuccessful trait to have as an
entrepreneur, but it can also be a hugedeterrent as it makes decentralizingpower almost impossible. When an
entrepreneur is a perfectionist they oftentheir focus on the minuscule parts of theirbusiness, which eventually begins to take
away from the big picture– growth. It’sokay to be a perfectionist, but you must
know what is worth focusing on and whatcan be toned down in order to be most
effective.
Hire on Strengths
Everyone knows that human capital iskey, but not everyone knows how to shape
their workforce effectively, this meanslooking beyond resumes and experience.
When hiring people don’t focus entirely onthe person’s resume and what they havedone in the past. Focus on what they can
do in the future.
This means identifying the person’sstrengths, weaknesses and how they willtranslate into your business. For examplewhen hiring a sales manager, don’t look
for people with just managerialexperience, look for people some
experience and outstanding personalskills that is where the success lies.
Avoid KeepingInvestment Capital
When an entrepreneur starts to see theirbusiness become profitable they
immediately look for the first way thatthey can benefit personally. Avoiding this
urge to cut out a gain in a financialstandpoint is crucial because those funds
must be reinvested if you want thecompany to grow. This doesn’t mean you
have to entirely cut out your salary orpay, it just means that toning down theunnecessary costs to your business can
will promote growth and success.
