Union Movement:• Union – spoke for all members of a trade

– Collective bargaining was used to negotiate as a group

– Strikes were used when demands were not met– Skilled trades first to form unions (benefited the

lower middle class more than the poorest workers)

– Work for women and children: shorter hours, restricted type of work and age of workers

Other Reforms:• Abolition of Slavery

– Britain abolished slavery in its empire in 1833

– Some were morally against slavery– Some saw an economic threat

• Role of Women – Paid far less than men in factories– Formed unions
