Example: Build on a spontaneous learning

experience about what the body needs for effective functioning e.g. fruit, vegetables and water. This could be followed by programming an excursion to a local green grocer or community garden.

How does Munch & Move relate to the National Quality Standards?

Quality Area 1: Educational Program and Practice

Munch & Move provides the foundation for an educational program and practice enhancing children’s learning and development opportunities.

Quality Area 2: Children’s Health and Safety

The Munch & Move program focuses on promoting children’s health and safety in line with Australian Government guidelines such as Get Up and Grow and the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Example: Run a Fundamental Movement

Skills (FMS) session. Consider incorporating traditional Indigenous games e.g. Kolap (throwing game), Tarnambai (running game) and Kangaroo (jumping game).

Quality Area 3: Physical Environment

A safe and suitable environment provides the opportunity for children to explore and contribute to Munch & Move learning experiences.

Example: Creating and caring for a

sustainable fruit and vegetable garden, designed to allow children flexible use, interaction and access will provide ongoing learning opportunities.

Quality Area 4: Staffing Arrangements

Utilising educators’ knowledge and skills gained through Munch & Move training to work collaboratively on related learning experiences. This creates opportunities for the development of respectful relationships and active engagement of children in the program.

Example: The Munch & Move staff development kit can be used to up-skill staff in effectively implementing the key messages. Munch & Move provides the opportunity for educators to plan healthy eating and FMS sessions, while also ensuring they role model healthy behaviours.

Quality Area 5: Relationships with Children

The Munch & Move program assists in fostering relationships with children, being responsive and respectful and ensuring that all children feel a sense of security and belonging.

Example: Group learning experiences based

around foods children eat at home, leading to a discussion about the variety of foods consumed by different cultures. Provide a cooking experience where children can taste the various foods or an excursion to a local restaurant.

Quality Area 6: Collaborative Partnerships with

Families and Communities

The Munch & Move program provides opportunities for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with families and communities in order to achieve quality health outcomes for children.

Example: Children bring in a healthy family

recipe that can be cooked and tasted. A discussion could take place around the health benefits of the food and where the produce is usually purchased.

Quality Area 7: Leadership and Service Management

Effective leadership and management of a service is enhanced by the Munch & Move program which contributes to an appropriate environment for children’s learning and development.

Example: Munch & Move is included in a

service's nutrition, physical activity and small screen policies. The service can also provide information to support families in these areas.

The Northern Sydney Health Promotion Service (Northern Sydney Local Health District) supports Preschool, Long Day Care and Family Day Care services during Munch & Move training and implementation. For more information:
