HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

BY CHARLIE WILLIAMS

My audience range is between 14 and 22 therefore I am targeting teenagers/young adults. Teenagers are commonlyRepresented as aggressive and using profanity which matches the grime music style stereotype. A massive perception Of teens this age is that they are in gangs or associated to them and grime music too is closely linked to gang culture.

My magazine partly backs this up with numerous references to violent “youths” for Example one of the artist on the main cover has an article about him saying thatHe was in prison and talks about his hard childhood (numerous references to councilEstates another thing which is heavily linked with grime music.

However I have challenged the stereotypes that grime music is just sung/rapped By men with an exclusive label associated with the magazine that is just for womenGrime artists

The common conception of grime music is explicit language/profanity. Also there is a View that grime music is usually involved or integrated with gangs. Drugs and crime are alsoHighly linked with grime music. My magazine does follow some of these views e.g. drugs andCrime however I wanted to challenge the view by not involving drugs into the magazine. The reason for this is that I wanted to represent the main artist as successful and a role model For people who have come from his position. Therefore I believed it would be a bad influenceFor the younger readers of the magazine. Furthermore slang is used in grime music. So I Decided to use words like “cool” “Down and dirty” and “buzz”

This is a typical grime music video

I used videos like this to plan my photos this image is very similar to my main imageUsed on the front cover however I decided to have the artist with their hood upAs well

The artist on the front page has his hood up and is staring directly at theCamera this is an attempt to create an intimidating figure(someone with power) Furthermore the hoody in general is used as many People associate it with youths. I used dark colours for my model to contrast The bright vibrant colours I used for my masthead this is to emphasise that They’ve been in the struggle but there is hope for them.

The stereotypical social group I have represented are teens who live in urban built up cities. However they may live in lower accommodations than would be associated say with the rockScene. I decided these people as they are the people who listen to grime music and may haveFurther interests in the genre. Despite their lack of disposable income I believe they are the onlyViable market for my product

As you can see from this image the dominant colours are green and goldThe reason for this is because that there is a view that people of this group Are motivated by money and success. The green and gold are links to money And this is another reason for me using these colours.
