The Carlton Riverina Football League will reach the half way point this weekend with the completion of games scheduled in the first round. •- By far the most impor

tant match is the Saturday game at Wagga's Robertson Oval between the home side and the Narrandera Imperials.

The Tigers will view the gm:ne as their turning point of the season, for, if they are defeated, their chances of forcing a place in the top four will be very difficult in the seco.nd round of home and away matches.

Both sides will be without key players, as will all clubs who have NSW representatives players committed this weekend with the state's sides final Fosters Shield match against A CT in Canberra on Sunday.

W agga will miss the class and combination of the Peiper brothers Gerald and Russell, while Narrandera will have out captain-coach Russell Durnan, and possibly talented backman, Peter Quirk.

The Tigers failed in their first real pressure game last Sunday against Coolamon, and although they were only narrowly beaten in a

truely magniftcient game, they must accept that pressure is what football is really all about.

Because of the top sides being without their leading players as mentioned, some surprises could be in store in Sunday's games, although in most cases sides up the ladder are clashing with those near the bottom.

The long standing and traditional rivalry that exists between the Turvey Park Bulldogs and Coolamon Grasshoppers might just be enough to lift the Bulldogs for a big performance against their more fancied country opponents.

Turvey's defeat at the hands of East WaggaKooringal last week must have the Bulldog supporters resigned to the fact that they are going to be "also rans" this season, but there is nothing they would like more than to cause an upset win over Coolamon.

In another vital game, the loser of the Griffith Swans verses Ardlethan Stars clash at Griffith will also be plainly aware that a finals berth will be out of the question if defeated this week.

East Wagga:-:Kooringal's captain-coach Andrew Vanderfeen, who is another player who may be required for state duty today, is likely to turn at the half way point of the season as the leading goalkicker, with Craig Patterson from Turvey Park and Steven Hall from the Stars not too far behind.

◄ COVER: Coolamon centre half forward Warren McLoughlin goes over the back and full forward Brett Allen has the front position but the ball tli~s fr7e wit~ Hopper ~ingman Steve Pat~ison (15) and Wagga 's Murray Denton and David Loutitt runnmg m dunng Sunday s RFL game at Kmdra Park, Coolamon.

Last week we defeated Griffith narrowly in a very sub-standard match. The match was an absolute 'shocker' from the spectators view point.

Our football fundamentals

BLUE. GOLD V

went missing and so nearly did the match, although we looked the better team after halftime.

Award winners were the young and old, Ian Bloomfield , Tony Ryan and Vic Hugo.

Our Reserves won narrowly with the only interest being the closeness of the scores. Award winners were Craig Royle, Graham Trainor and Greg Davis.

Our U19s were outpointed by a better drilled Griffith team . Award winners were Bill Bevan and Simon Craze .

Today we do battle with the Tigers. Our football fundamentals will have to return with a vengance if we are to trouble the impressive Tigers.

The Seconds are on line to do very well this year under coach Gary Mattingly, and can look for

ward to an exciting time as finals approach, but only if that same application shown on the weekend is continued by all!

Alan Bartholomew wins the Melbourne Tractor Spares award this week, while a fine game by Tony Owens saw him take out the ACI award with 9 votes, followed by Alan Bartholomew with 5, Deon Desially on 2, as well as Paul Kilfoyle on 2.

The Seniors let the game slip away in the last minutes after leading most of the day in a close match. We need to have a killer instinct and finish off our hard work getting the ball by playing direct, play-on football. Let's gear up this week for a big game against Coolamon.

The Miltons Gear voting was won by Geoff Harrison on 6, Danny McFadden and Greg Tooze on 3, Jock Carrol and Marty McFadden on 2. The Pewter donated by the Hill Family was won by Brian Hawke.

Ladies for Narrandera are Jenny Bernett, Liz Holden, Coralie Wakefield and Sandra Donohue. A big thankyou to all those ladies who help on Saturdays!

~,, ]i!!W~l What a game! It was a contest worth ~

crawling naked through the entire . sewer systems of New York, London and Book Book, over rusty razor blades and barbed wire with hands and feet manacled a.nd a cramp in one ear, to see. Both sides threw them-selves in with a fanatical desperation GREEN, WHITE v and the brilliant high markmg, fast · flow-on style and bone shaking clashes thrilled the crowd. The euphoria in the sheds afterwards was like a premiership as supporters and players hugged each other in jubilation.

Picking the award winners was as difficult as taking meat from a hungry hammerhead shark as there were so many tremendous performers. Nonetheless it was obvious that the man of the match was Brett Allen who, after an ordinary first half, sparkled like Las Vegas at midnight in the second, booting eight match winning goals. The dinner for two went to Garry Buchanan whose consistent standards of excellence must rank him, along with Neil and Chambo as the finest players Coolamon has produced over the past fifteen years. The last award went to. the man with the complexioq of an oxidized potato - Andrew Pattison, whose hearts so big an industrial crane couldn't lift it. Others to play dynamic games were Burger Pattison, Wow McLoughlin, Brian Buchanan and the electrifying Kevin Williams who's so slippery he makes a greasy eel look arthritic.

I must mention how dangerous it was sitting next to Brian Bradley who became so volatile in the last quarter it made Jacko's performance the previous day look as tranquil as a lake in heaven, by comparison.

In stark contrast to the main game the Seconds were comprehensively thrashed. The signs were fairly clear before hand and it should now be obvious that there is no substitute for a fair dinkum go on the training track. Shane Buchanan stood out like a Pierre Cardin shirt in a pile of jumble sale leftovers; Tony Dean jolted himself

A N T H O N Y DANIHER

The announcement on Monday night that Anthony Daniher had been selected in the Victorian squad for the inter-state series championships games against Western Australia in Perth on July 14, was great news for Australian football through

out the Riverina and Southern N.S.W . With traditional rivals Turvey Park and Coolamon holding the ~FL spotlight at Maher Oval, Wagga, on Sunday , it 1s worth recalling that it was in this game, at the same venue, not so many years ago, that South Melbourne coach and triple Brownlow Medallist Ian Stewart made up his mind that the then 16 year old Daniher was a VFL player of the future . Anthony now has excellent prospects of playing alongside eldest brother Terry, who will captain Victoria, and likely to be named at centre half forward. The small town of Ungarie has every reason to feel proud that the three Daniher brothers - Terry, Neale and Anthony - have been honoured with the famous big white 'V', while their father Mr. Jim Daniher was awarded the VCFL Long Service Medallion last year .

COOLAMON NOTES (Continued from P. '9) into alertness with a strong authoritative display in the ruck and Mark Buchanan contested with his customary desperation.

The Thirds likewise were fairly well beaten, but again they fought the game out bravely. Cranky Frankie Pattison paved the way for his big brothers later on with an eye catching display of awesome devastation while Squeaker McKelvie who must lay claim to being one of the most consistently outstanding players in the club was his usual brilliant self.

-VFL MEDIA LIAISON OFFICER PAULA HEMPTON -

VCFL SQUAD NAMED Victorian Country Football League selectors have

announced a strong squad for the representative match against the Victorian Amateur Football Association to be held in Mildura on Sunday, July 14.

The 43-man squad will train at Punt Road on July 7 after which the 21-man team for Mildura will be named . The Ballarat, Goulburn Valley and Ovens & Murray leagues are heavily represented with nine , seven and six players repectively.

Unfortunately no Riverina players were chosen although a couple were close to being selected .

Although the V:CFL defeated an All-Australian Amateur team in 1983, jt is keen to avenge for last year's defeat by the Victorian Amateurs in Bendigo .

VCFL coach Roland Crosby attended a match be-. tween the Victorian Amateurs and the Victorian Football Association and , although defeated by 10 points, the Amateurs looked most impressive.

Former VFL players included in the VCFL squad include Leigh Murnane (Fitzroy, Ballarat), Ray Bryne (Collingwood & Geelong, Bellarine) and Peter Tossol (Melbourne , Ovens & Murray).

The full squad is as follows : Goulburn Valley Footbal League: Chris Smith, Tony Jones, Richard Warbarton, John Jones, Jeff Berry, David Code, Daryl Reid. sion One is now at the halfway mark and if results continue in the vein of indifference exhibited in the first two weekends of the second round as compared to the first two

matches of the season, predictions will be made with uncertainty.

Only Collingullie-Ashmont, Barellan United and South Wagga-Tolland have been consistent with their 'return' matches in the second round of games. That is, the Demons have produced wins again over South Wagga-Tolland and North Wagga, as they did at the start of the season; Bare/Ian have lost to M. C. U. and beaten South Wagga-Tolland as they did first time, and the bottom placed Dons, have again lost both games .

T.R. Y. C. almost true to the inconsistent tag they're dubiously earned in previous seasons

hav~ had a complete reversal of results of their opening two matches. Temora and North Wagga have each improved by a win, whilst M. C. U. and Marrar have both gone down a win compared to their first two games.

Whilst all this may seem to be trivial statistics, the fact is results are sure to continue to be uncertain, which will maintain interest in the · competition throughout.

Temora's mammoth win over M. C. U. last week has taken them to the top of the ladder for the first time this season and must lift their chances of a long-awaited premiership.

At the other end of the ladder, Marrar's second consecutive defeat, coupled with the loss of their coach, Tony Turner, must put in jeopardy their chances of playing in the finals series.

Today's round of matches could well pro- , duce three reverse results of first. meetings to further substantiate the previously mentioned inconsistencies. Time will tell.

BLUE & GOLD BANDS

Congratulations Temora on your very convincing win last Saturday. No excuses from this end, we were comprehensively outplayed in every aspect of the game in one of the best displays we've encounted for some time. '

In a side which had few winners Mick McRae just pipped Gordon Wooden for the Mangoplah Hotel award with 'Desperate Dan' Galvin not far behind.

The other two games failed to reach any great heights but we were happy to come home with the points. In the Reserves Andrew Hunter won the Tolland Hotel Towel from Byron Cole and Brian McRae, whilst the Peter Matthews Towel in the U19s went to Owen Ross with Stewart Davis, Phil McDevitt and Bernard McRae lending valuable assistance.

A big thankyou to Maree and Kevin McRae for their efficient and successful organisation of the recent 300 Club. Don't know what we'd do without you (Maree that is!).

This week Trivia Quiz question is: How big was the dog which recently savaged a well-known Farrer League coach?.Send your entry together with a $100 note (no cheques thanks) to Sec. MCU Football Club. Winner notified by first available carrier pigeon!

A vital match today and after last week's drubbing we need to find extra reserves of endeavour and application if we're not to slip further down the ladder.

After next week's game at Marrar , EastlakesMCU are holding a 'Joke Night' at the Thomas Blarney . $10 will get you fed and entertained , contact Col Roberson or Keith Mauel for table book-ings.

~·@M!!MIMtM,i •I•l ►◄ E# ■ ■. Well, we made the trip to Barellan,

.. . · ;~ F!~iE ;~¥1~:r'lf ~; · R·ED, BLACK v more closely kmt side in the change

rooms as compared to previous weeks. It would be a fair statement to say that there were more elbows, eye

gouges and body contact in the change rooms than out on the field.

Our forward line now has a much better understanding of the rural economy surrounding Barellan, with such current topics as the effects of the Government's cutback of the 18% Investment Allowance; the recent introduction of increased fuel taxes and the burden it will place on an already severely depleted rural socioeconomic system; and the predicted 1985 wheat harvest, all coming up in casual conversation. Although interrupted at least nine times (we kicked 4.5) by our backline, we are much better blokes after hearing what the Barellan backline had to say.

Award winners included: Skeeter Crawford lsts and Ezza 2nds.

Our bad run of luck continued in the Under 19s game on Sunday against RAAF with our boys suffering their third loss in four games - can Currie stem the tide? Let's start today! Sonny Nguyen was voted our best with Mark Richards, Craig Hall and John Carey all playing well.

Every player has three tasks today. 1: Pay your $2 insurance, 2: Let Pauly Allen know that you are going/ not going to next Saturday's smorgasbord/video disco, and 3: Get a kick of the football.

Today we see if Temora's 90-point victory over Mangoplah last week was not just a typographical error in the Wagga Daily Advertiser, when they pit their best against our best in a game, which given good weather, should see a lot of goals kicked. Then join us for a beer if you're up to it!

WIN A SLOPPY JOE Entry Form Page 24

One of the best all-round efforts Temora has put in for the last few seasons saw them victors over the highly fancied front-runners 'Mango'. Coach Phil Reid has certainly got the boys firing well, .and the BLUs~~~~ITE only thing that has worried him, is for them to concentrate for the full four quarters. Well, they certainly did put in a 100% effort and the rewards were very sweet indeed. The 'born again footballer' Jap Bent won the mug with a strong display at centre-half-forw_ard, with Ray 'Dago' Block and Trev 'Coogee Bear' Reid sharing the other two awards.

The Reserves only went down by a couple of goals, a big improvement on last round's 200 point drubbing. Jamie 'Cagney' Durham returned to form to win the mu$, with Johnny 'McReedy' McRae played above himself to claim the socks.

The U19s also improved on last round's effort but were still unable to account for a determined Mango. The boys are doing quite well considering that they are flat out for numbers each week. Players like James Corbett, Shane Johnson, Phil Gerhard and many others show great potential for future years in football.

Tonight is the 'Sportsmans Night' at the RSL Club and I'm sure everyone is in for a good rage. If the talented speakers don't have you intrigued and laughing by the end of the night, I'm positive 'Mossey' or 'Doogs' should be able to remedy that.

This week we find ourselves against South Wagga, so let's play football for four quarters and achieve the best possible results.

~ Congratulations North Wagga

(mostly the Firsts) on last weeks effort. Most supporters on both sides felt the scoreboard not a true indication of the game.

. The afternoons better perfor-RED. WHITE v mers were rewarded as follows -

lsts: Meyers Mug to 'Gill' (what more can we say); Nardies to Terry; Crossroads Plonk to Narna Price and 'G.J.' the Roxanne Treatment (you don't need the haircut, so what about removing some of those 'beauty spots'?).

2nds: Lewington 'Lubricator' to 'Tubby'; Nardies to Wock Price ( was in running for mark of the day but has 'precious' little left on top, and doesn't need the haircut); Rob Whyman won the Crossroads Award and our flying backman Col Jacob the Roxanne Treatment.

U19s: The Wagga Picture Frames mug to Shaun Tipping; Crossroads Award to 'Smithy' and the Club Award to Michael Cooke.

An apology, "The Gunn" is spelt with one 'n' (The Gun). More trivia: Who was the backman at the game last with the charming escort??? And speaking of trivia, thanks for the great night put on by the Social Club last week after the game.

We thank Royan's for the new time-keepers/ scoring box - looks terrific (but the blokes in it want carpet, chairs, heater esky, pie warmer and the whole bit - they've got 'buckleys').

This week another set of clean heels. Remember last time.

Two wins on Saturday by big margins, but surprisingly in. both games spectators witnessed many fine passages of footy.

The maJor award in Firsts was taken out by that cheeky backman Kelly Tubb who turned the Dons attack around time and

BLUE & WHITE STRIPES

time again, and the Roo Towel winner Mick Conlan demonstrated his versatility by leading the charge at both ends of the ground. Good players

· were not hard to find but David Irvin, Ian Lucas, Peter Cox, Peter Clark and Ian Male preformed well in a good team effort.

Our 2nd XVIII won well and were best served by Greg Trembath (Roo Towel winner) who consistantly won the 'hard' ball and led by example all day, Geoff Male who marked with great confidence, a very busy John Cullinane, skillful Rowan Gladman and coach Paul. .

Goal umpiring must be hard on the nerves, noticed our 2nd XVIII regular call it quits at ¾ time on Saturday, didn't find out the problem but was told it could have been frustration, starvation or dehydration.

Mark and David tell me the Footy Club are holding a Trivia Night at the WM Club on Saturday, June 29, so let's make it a bright night, see David or Mark for bookings.

Today we visit the Demons and the importance of this game must be termed as vital, so we cannot afford to lose.

' - NORTH WAGGA SAINTS Last Saturday, against the Gullie,

was by far the best game the seniors have played all year. They gave everything they had, and although we won in most positions, we didn't win on the scoreboard. It was also pleasing to hear the club song after the game, it also threw confusion in to the Gullie

The Lobstering Trip held on Sunday proved to be a success, although not many lobsters were caught. G. Slater pulled up the biggest catch of the day but unfortunately it wasn't a lobster. Thanks to Hoffa for organising a good day out and he assures me there will be another one in July.

Last week saw us go down to top side The Rock in all three grades. Our most successful competitors in the Firsts were Anthony Baker, Danny Malone, John McCormack and Chris Coate. I sometimes think it is a good thing 'Bakes' surname does not

BLACK, RED SASH

portray his occupation as I feel quite sure the bread he made would even be too tough to eat.

The loss of Tony Turner with a broken jaw was certainly the saddest thing since Molly Jones passed award in a Country Practice. It now seems time that the team can show their respect for such a great character and football master by knuckling down and winning our way back into the final four.

Bad luck also to veteran second grader Garry Shea who is recovering from a broken arm after last weeks torrid match. There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that he was trying to imitate the toughness of Mark Jackson.

A recent footbi3.ll profile I was compiling on popular recruit Lindsay Geppert came to an abrupt end recently when the answer to the question "Who would you like to be marooned on desert island with", was, a man in a boat. Sorry Mrs. Gepp.

This week it's North Wagga who cannot be taken lightly.

m What a game.the 2nd XVIII played. They won in every quarter, unfortunately injuries to Dave (broken nose) Hocking and Peter (kick in the teeth) Cull, plus minor

~injuries to numerous players marBLA~~Rf P~HITE red the game. Coach 'H' Argus

again dominated at fullforward with five big ones. A big thank you must go to Barry Flack and Charlie Crane for filling positions in the 2nds. An excellent way to win considering the curcumstances. A top team effort. Boree Creek Cafe awards went to Shane McCartney $10 with John Bamblett and Stewart Watters receiving $5 each.

The 1st XVIII was a completely different matter. From the first bounce RAAF were in control with five of our players having to double up - it left the selectors with a big headache. On the subject of selectors, there are only three (3) in the club, those being Col Ingram, Harry Argus and Mick Hopwood. Please let them make the decisions! Awards in the lsts were: Jack Lang $40 with a welcome return to form; with Mick (Big Bird) Hopwood $30, and $20 goin$ to Terry (Truck) Hannon. Also to central umpue, Ivan Carroll, thanks for a very good job.

Coach Col, as with Charlie Corbett last year, has found that we take the game too lightly, and don't listen. So how about we get our minds on the job!

just to get our priorities sorted out (just joking). A word of appreciation to the players who filled in

for Magic Johnson & Co., Tony Koch, Bob Cowie, Bruce Mango, Col Passfield, etc., all surprised our hierachy with splendid performances.

Another to make his debut in fine style was Ronald, alias Rat, alias Raymond, alias Ken who has more lines than Lou Richards and makes less sense then a drunk Dangles (just joking again) but plays a gutsy type of football which should be an asset in the future.

Wayne DeBritt proved to the selectors his worth as a goal sneak (a la Diacos) to slam through six classy goals and take out the mug.

Chook Henley and Rod Knagge dominated in a forward line that looked as crowded as a fat persons convention in Googs bedroom.

Monday's Advertiser brought tears of nostalgia with best players like Ron (I'm a legend) Milthorpe and Greg (my knees a legend) Egan to the fore. For the second week in a row we also see the mysterious R. Jones, who if he maintains present form may just edge out Jamie Thompson for recruit of the year.

Today a tough one against the Boree Boys which we can't afford to drop, so let's give it 100%.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The day of deliverance is at hand. Last week we witnessed a minor miracle when the Firsts played close to their full potential, all at the same place and at the

BLUE & WHITE same time. What a delight it was for BANDS the long suffering supporters to

watch. A tight backline, free running forwards, with every

one chasing and backing up made the opposition look decidedly second rate. Or, as one member of our cheer squad so eloquently put "Boree who?"

'Superpuss' Lambie got more kicks than a pyromaniac at a bon-fire, and converted eleven of those to goals. 'Steve' McQueen stole a few hearts (including Nobby's) as he battled hard all day. Gary Ewart got more touches than a buxon blonde at a bucks party. Steve Ward is getting so good at sheperding that he is thinking of re-mustering to Messiah. Enough, I could name the whole side, well done fellas. Let's hope it's not a flash in the pan (and I don't mean gold pan). ·

The Seconds can't be far away from a win, as they seem to be improving each week. They just have to learn to play four quarters instead of 2 or 3. Paul Warner won a trip to the Allonville with his best on ground performance. Hoo Ray Kirkpatrick had a million possessions and 'Weetie' Wheatley must have had his before he came to the ground, as he didn't stop running all day.

I'm getting to the stage of running out of superlatives for the U19s, as they go from strength to strength. Last Saturday they played the best game I have seen from them, as they completely demoralized South WaggaTolland. They are a fine side and will definitely give the premiership a big shake this year. Like the Firsts, all the U19s deserve a mi;ntion, however, A. Young, M. Coe and T. Middleton got the nod, as the three best for the day.

The halfway mark of the season saw the Bulldogs register two good wins and as a result of this both sides retain top

The Reserves recorded a good win over some spirited opposition from a gallant Bushpig team. However in the end the Bulldogs proved too determined and classy. It was a team effort by the players all day, with many worthy of receiving the three awards given out at the end of the match. Naming best players was not an easy job, with so many contributors, but a few who do deserve special mention are Sharpy, Danny, Garry, Graeme on the back line while Trevor, Tony, Batesy, Moo and Ray had a field day up forward. I would like to thank Ricky also, well done from all the boys.

Winning is the name of the game and the lsts certainly achieved that result in the good 50 minutes of football played. The other 50 minutes looked like it was used up by the players to get a sun tan, as from a spectators point of view th.:it is what it must have seemed.

Reflecting on the game you could say we only played as well as we had to. To the Bushpigs credit they kept at us all day but to our credit there was always something in reserve to ensure victory.

Winners on the day were (the school teachers pet) Alan Lang at FB, Reedy when moved to CHB, Deno was never beaten in the BP, up forward Steve (Superboot) May, Mark Spencer, Kev McAlister and Phil Sheen had the opposition guessing all day. Special mention must go to Jacko's mate Langy, and the scintillating Chris Selby ruck roving, ably supported by devastating destroyer Dono who picked up kicks at will around the ground.

Award winners - lsts: C. Selby 20, M. Spencer 17, G. Lang 17, M. Donaldson 14, D. Morriss 3, G. Wastell 3, R. Reed 1. 2nds: Jumper, R. Keast; T-Shirt, T. Donoghue; Socks, T. Cooper. Esso Award, R. Reed.
