HOW HAS GROWING INTEREST IN SPORT AFFECTED MELBOURNE?

The growing interest in sport has allowed Melbourne to hold the Olympics in 1956. If Melbourne wasn’t finished in preparations to hold the Olympics, Rome was going to instead because they were ready for the 1960 Olympics. The Olympic stand was demolished at the MCG in 2004. The former Olympic Pool remains at the Westpac Centre as a part of the Olympic Park Complex. The former athletes village remains in Heidelberg West, Victoria, as public housing. St. Kilda Hall, where the fencing events were held, still remain. 67 nations competed in the 1956 Olympics. All Olympic events were held in Melbourne with the exception of Equestrian events because of Quarantine. These were held in Sweden, 5 months before. These have had an impact because Melbourne was chosen in 1949 to host the 1956 Olympic Games. The tourism would have been enormous Some of the events that are held in Melbourne are AFL games, Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup Carnival, Spring Racing Carnival, Australian Open, V8 Supercars, Cricket, Audi Victoria Week (Yachts), Rip Curl Pro (Surfing), Australian Post Stawell Gift (Running), Warrnambool Race Day Carnival, JBWere Masters (Golf), EQUITANA Melbourne (Equestrian) and more.

The Commonwealth Games have also had an effect on Melbourne by attracting many people and possibly the same outcome of the Olympic Games. It would’ve attracted tourists, money and lots and lots of sales! It was the largest sporting event to be held in Melbourne and it eclipsed the Summer Olympics in 1956 by the number of countries, athletes competing and events being held. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies were both held at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). There were 13 venues that were used for the Games in Melbourne and 6 venues were Regional and Suburban venues. The cost for hosting the games was 1.144 billion dollars.
