Engineering for Professionals
JHU-Engineering for Professionals (EP)
• Part-Time graduate engineering program• Eleven fully online Master’s degrees• Worldwide program• 1,965 students enrolled in online courses last year
EP’s Kaltura
• Over 5,600 videos currently in our catalog• Average run time for each video is 15 minutes• Most videos are audio-over-narrated presentation• Example video
Current Closed-Captioning
• 3PlayMedia does all of EP’s captioning• EP closed captions all videos in an online
course when a student enrolled in that course makes a formal request for accommodations or by faculty request.
Challenges
• In the future, all schools may be required to add captions to all online video content
• Estimated cost for EP to complete this in FY 15 is approximately $325,000
Strategy
• Captioning responsibilities delegated across instructional technology staff– Multimedia staff support instructional designers,
who then assist faculty with captioning– All new online courses, as well as online courses
going through redesign should be captioned
