At the 2014 Kaltura Connect conference in June, CJ Johnson, co-founder and VP of Product at 3Play Media, presented with Matt Bochniak, Multimedia Supervisor at Johns Hopkins University, about leveraging closed captions and transcripts in higher education. Johns Hopkins University uses 3Play Media as their captioning and transcription provider.

Current Closed-Captioning

• 3PlayMedia does all of EP’s captioning• EP closed captions all videos in an online

course when a student enrolled in that course makes a formal request for accommodations or by faculty request.

Challenges

• In the future, all schools may be required to add captions to all online video content

• Estimated cost for EP to complete this in FY 15 is approximately $325,000

Strategy

• Captioning responsibilities delegated across instructional technology staff– Multimedia staff support instructional designers,

who then assist faculty with captioning– All new online courses, as well as online courses

going through redesign should be captioned
