Perhaps no other place on earth captures the drama of nature quite like Yellowstone National Park. Over two million acres of steaming geysers, shimmering thermal pools, bubbling mudpots, towering lodgepole pines and roaming wildlife leave millions of visitors mesmerized every year. Its unique features and extraordinary beauty led America to designate Yellowstone as its first national park in 1872. Today, roads have replaced stagecoach routes, newer lodges have joined historic hotels and visitor activities are nearly as plentiful as geysers. Xanterra is proud to be one of the primary stewards of this extraordinary American experience. We are committed to helping you find your ultimate Yellowstone experience while working to protect and preserve the world’s first national park for generations to come.

President Grant ordered the Hayden Party to explore the upper reaches of the Yellowstone when he heard rumors about the park’s many wonders. In 1870, explorers confirmed that the claims about the park were largely true. Shortly after that trip, permanent lodging establishments began to spring forth in some of the park’s most majestic places. The Old Faithful Inn was one of the first to welcome guests in 1904 and has thrived more than 100 years. Recognized for its importance in the nation’s history of tourism and national influence on architecture and construction in the national parks, the Inn stands as one of Yellowstone’s National Historic Landmarks. This lodge along with the other lodging operations in Yellowstone serve as ideal base camps for exploring some of the world’s most fascinating rivers, lakes, valleys, wildlife and geothermal features.

A T T R A C T I O N S & R E T A I LYellowstone National Park is home to countless activities aimed at entertaining and educating our visitors. Guests can step back into the Wild West on one of our guided horseback rides or spend a day on Yellowstone Lake with a guided fishing expedition or Scenicruise. Visitors also have the opportunity to explore Yellowstone’s wildlife and natural resources as they were decades ago — aboard one of nine “Historic Yellow Buses” — each a restored replica of the tour buses used from the 1930s to the 1950s. For guests’ enjoyment during off-peak seasons, Xanterra and the Yellowstone Association have designed a number of multi-day “Lodging and Learning” packages. These interpretive programs feature wolf watching, nature viewing and photography.

Guests can also explore the range of unique gifts and apparel in our shops and general stores in their search for the perfect memento of their Yellowstone adventure. Or, the hardiest adventurers can take on the vast backcountry of the park to experience some of the most remote wilderness areas in the Lower 48.

First protected as a national monument in 1908 by President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, the Grand Canyon was later designated as a national park in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson. President Roosevelt did more to grow the national park system than any other person and his determination to protect the Canyon is legendary. The Grand Canyon beckons millions of visitors every year. Some visitors come to marvel at the colors, enjoy the serenity or simply take in the immensity of the Canyon. Others venture deep into its cliffs, bluffs and buttes potentially crossing and re-crossing the Canyon to get the full experience. Year-round, the South Rim offers something for everyone. The lush forests of pinyon and ponderosa pine interspersed with shrubby cliffrose and blackbrush provide the botanical backdrop for squirrels, mule deer, attractive silver-gray coyotes and other creatures adapting to the Canyon’s harsh environment.

El Tovar was opened by the Fred Harvey Company in 1905. Arguably the first proponent of environmentally friendly tourism, restaurateur Fred Harvey emphasized preservation of the park’s natural resources and ensured the building’s architecture complemented its beauty. Constructed of native stone and Oregon pine, this historic hotel provides an air of venerable dignity. The hotel has hosted such luminaries as Theodore Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Western author Zane Grey, and many others.

El Tovar offers its guests concierge and room service and is a Registered National Historic Landmark. It also features the Canyon’s premier dining facility, El Tovar Dining Room, which seats 211, and El Tovar Bar, seating 60. Guests who stay in El Tovar enjoy magnificent views of the canyon like no other.

Winter at the Grand Canyon provides a fairy-tale setting for the holidays. Spring comes late to the Canyon, but there is no mistaking its arrival. Almost overnight, a rainbow of wildflowers appears to greet the season. Summer is the most popular time to visit the Canyon with mule rides and motorcoach tours offered every day. Fall brings cooler temperatures and changing colors.

We encourage guests to take advantage of the Xanterra/Grand Canyon Institute Lodging and Learning programs offered during the lower-demand periods of November and January through early May. Guests can learn about the 1.8 billion-year-old rock at the bottom of the Canyon, hike the Bright Angel Trail, climb aboard a motorcoach or schedule an interpretive tour of the Canyon with a Xanterra guide. Visitors are drawn to some of the most interesting gift shops in the national park system, featuring historic Colter-designed Registered National Historic Landmarks such as the Hopi House, Hermit’s Rest, Lookout Studio and the Watchtower, where they will find Native American artistry, pottery and a variety of unique souvenirs. The Watchtower has recently undergone an extensive, exhaustive redesign to help restore and preserve the stone, cylindrical architecture of the structure.

Long before there were Grand Canyon helicopters, white water rafting companies or even Grand Canyon mule tours, there was the Grand Canyon Railway. Before paved roads, hotels and restaurants, and even before the Grand Canyon was made a national park or Arizona became a state, the Grand Canyon Railway brought interested travelers from all over the world to stand on the rim, gaze in awe upon the Canyon and ponder the feeling that touches all of humanity in a similar manner. Launching from the historic Williams Depot in Arizona, the Grand Canyon Railway carries tens of thousands of passengers into Grand Canyon National Park on its beautifully restored railway cars.

Zion National Park is “Yosemite with Color,” as Stephen T. Mather so eloquently stated when he served as the first director of the National Park Service. The initial geologic forces that began shaping the park occurred over two hundred million years ago during the Jurassic Period. The uplift of the Colorado Plateau is considered the first of many events that shaped this amazing national park. With over 146,000 acres of cliffs, canyons, diverse plant and animal life, Zion is a natural sanctuary of awe-inspiring beauty. Its massive sandstone walls, some towering as high as 3,800 feet above the valley floor, offer an opportunity for adventure, serenity and reflection for all who visit.

Zion Lodge was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood in the 1920s and was destroyed by fire in 1966. That same year, the lodge was rebuilt in just 100 days allowing guests to return to Zion, but sacrificing the hotel’s rustic design. The exterior was restored to its classic appearance in 1990. The lodge is situated in a grassy area of cottonwood trees and set against the massive, vertical canyon walls of beautiful red sandstone that make this park so spectacular. The facility features cabins with sustainable furnishings and amenities, including FSC-certified wood, LED lighting, in-room recycling and low-flow shower heads to name a few. The lodge offers dining at Red Rock Grill, a full-service restaurant seating 155, a seasonal open-air terrace seating 50 and the Castle Dome Café, a grab-and-go facility. When the seasonal NPS shuttle is in operation, the only vehicles allowed to drive to Zion Lodge are those driven by overnight lodge visitors and lunch or dinner tour buses. Visitors who plan to come into the park for the day must use complimentary shuttle transportation from the gateway community of Springdale.

Formed after the collapse of an ancient volcano, Crater Lake is the deepest (1,949 feet) and bluest lake in the United States. A national park since 1902, Crater Lake welcomes visitors to explore its lush forests, volcanic peaks and miles of hiking and biking trails. Summer months are the ideal time to experience the peaceful elegance of Crater Lake. Visitors can cruise the lake on daily Volcano Boat Cruises, travel around Rim Drive by car or bike and gaze out from more than 20 scenic overlooks. When Crater Lake was first discovered, people were amazed by its rich blue color and the beauty of the surrounding land. Visitors still experience that same awe today. Located on the south rim of the crater, Crater Lake Lodge is one of the greatest icons of the National Park Service.

The 60-foot-high faces of four American Presidents — Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln — are testaments and eternal reminders to the world of the birth, growth, preservation and struggles of a nation dedicated to democracy and the pursuit of liberty. When sculptor Gutzon Borglum came across Pahá Sápa, the Lakota name for the Black Hills of South Dakota, he proclaimed, “Here is the place! American history shall march along that skyline.” And so it does. Mount Rushmore’s gift shop offers one of the finest places to find a unique collection of gifts and souvenirs. Specialty items include handmade Native American arts and crafts as well as books about Native American history and the story of Mount Rushmore. Carvers Café, a food-court-style café that seats 300, offers visitors multiple food stations with exhibition kitchens that feature menus designed to satisfy every guest.

Evidence of dinosaurs, prehistoric peoples and ancient forests can be found in this pristine location deep in the Arizona desert. Petrified Forest National Park contains fossils of tall trees, strange ferns, large reptiles, small sharks and early dinosaurs dating back 225 million years. Native American ancestors used petrified wood for trading 6,000 years ago when it was still abundant. Today, the forest is a high desert with low-growing plants, small animals and soaring birds. The park has almost 94,000 acres, of which 50,000 are designated as wilderness. The Rainbow Forest Museum and Gift Shop are open year-round at the south entrance to the park. A snack bar is also available and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Harvey’s Diner, which seats 102, is at the north end of the park and is open for breakfast and lunch year-round.

There was a time in the heyday of U.S. passenger rail travel when the truly privileged class cruised the railways in style, traveling in their own private railcars, each car artfully outfitted to suit the owner’s unique needs and tastes, each traveler pampered by attentive staff. More than just transportation, the journey was an exquisite destination unto itself. Today you, too, can treat yourself to that same kind of unrivaled travel experience aboard one or more of three of America’s finest private passenger railcars.

Three Private Railcars

Three railcars compose the American Railway Explorer collection: The Utah parlor café-lounge car, The California dome/sleeper car and The Kansas platform car. Private railcar aficionados have long known of these luxurious railcars that for years traveled between Denver and Winter Park Resort as part of the famous Ski Train. All three of these magnificent railcars have been renovated and designed in the fashion of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express by no less than that fabled train’s architect, James Park. They are distinguished by their unsurpassed comfort and attention to detail such as walls adorned with delicate bird’s-eye marquetry, custom-made burnished brass lamps and rosette ceiling sconces from England and specially crafted European upholstery.

Whether for business or pleasure, chartering a private railcar is an imaginative alternative to ordinary event venues. For businesses and other organizations, private railcars deliver a perfect and portable setting for customer appreciation events, corporate functions, team-building, media events, sports events, festivals, alumni group outings or sales incentive trips. For entertaining family and friends, a private railcar charter is a perfect way to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries or family reunions.
