How Startup High injects Wagner’s 7 Survival Skills

#1 – Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Startup High Activity:At the beginning of the week each student chooses a problem such as distracted driving, teen bullying, etc. If they already have an idea for a venture, they can also work on their small business. As they meet with entrepreneurs they can ask questions about how to go about Solving their problem.

#2 – Collaboration Across Networks
Startup High Activity:All students join LinkedIn during the week and we use it to connect with each other plus research & connect with entrepreneurs as we meet them.
Startup High Activity:Multiple times during the week, students engage in “rejection therapy.” This gives them the opportunity to pitch ideas to strangers and possibly be rejected. For example, this picture is the result of a student randomly asking a local news station for a tour when we walked by their office.

#4 – Initiative & Entrepreneurship
Startup High Activity:Students are setup with a technology platform that enables them to go through a process to work at home on their venture. We know education is about lighting fires (vs. filling buckets) and we love it when students start to work on their ideas at night and after the program.
#5 – Effective Oral & Written communication
Startup High Activity:At the end of the week during Graduation, each student stands and delivers their pitch that includes the problem and solution they are tackling.
#6 - Assessing & Analyzing Information
Startup High Activity:We are all “In” on teaching students to code. Our vision is to introduce students to the concepts and encourage them to go learn more on their own.
#7 – Curiosity & Imagination
Startup High Activity:During the week students visit 8 different companies and engage their founders/leaders. Instead of simply listening to the stories of the leaders, student prepare questions by researching the company and the LinkedIn profiles of the leaders.
