How successful was Nazi propaganda?

• Why might this be a tricky question to answer?

• Herzstein – important role in strengthening popular support for the regime.

• Mason – more sceptical especially in relation to the working class.

• Welch – argues that you need to separate different strands of propaganda – successful in overall support for Hitler – varied success in relation to other policies. Also adds that it was successful in reinforcing existing attitudes rather than countering views.

• Geary – successful when it played on traditional prejudices and values.

paragraphs• Introduction – How important propaganda was to the Nazis

e.g. MoP set up (Goebbels) and what they were trying to achieve, types of propaganda, different degrees of success, views of historians not always in agreement

• Paragraph 1 ‘for’ – some propaganda was ‘counter-productive’ – e.g. newspapers leads to 10% drop in circulation, where they tried to challenge established beliefs e.g. Church

• Paragraph 2 ‘for’ – arguably the apparatus of the police state is what ensures people adhere to Nazi views rather than effective propaganda/Nazi views not accepted by all – especially the working classes who don’t buy into idea of a Volksgemeinschaft

• Paragraph 3 ‘against’ – Hitler Myth was effective, and support does increase/played on traditional German values

• Paragraph 4 ‘against’ – particularly successful with the youth who did not have entrenched views – Hitler Youth

• Conclusion – acknowledge the difficulty of measuring success, which argument is most important Make sure you answer the question – use examples from the presentations about the different

forms of propaganda and the impact they did/didn’t have. Figures and facts

Success criteria• Introduction•  Does it set up the debate and demonstrate knowledge of what the

question is asking?

• Conclusion •  Does it lift the answer by summarising the arguments but then

adding something more? Does it come to a judgement?• Does it incorporate understanding of historical interpretations and

debate?

• Paragraphs for and against•  Does the paragraph use the PEE structure?• Does the paragraph answer the question clearly in its ‘explanation’? • Does it use solid evidence to support its point e.g. statistics and

examples? The mark scheme says ‘a range of appropriately selected evidence’ (look at your presentation handouts and the textbook – give examples)
