How Technology Advances Affect Our Society

It is a well-established fact that we live in a digital age where technology plays a crucial role in our lives. It has permeated every single poor of our society, and its fibers go deep, both figuratively and literally. 

Movies and science fiction have often portrayed our present day as a world where flying cars, humanoid robots and teleportation are an everyday occurrence, and while we don’t have those (yet), the effects of modern technology and its innovations are arguably more profound, even if they are less spectacular in a visual sense.

One aspect of society which has experienced the deepest changes is human interaction. Just five or six years ago, nobody could have guessed how much of a role smartphones, for instance, would play in our lives. 10 or 15 years ago, nobody would have predicted the importance of social networks. Communication with other people, no matter where they are in the world, from just about anywhere at any time, is something that is considered normal today.

Who would have thought that we would be able to do our shopping or watch movies from our home with just a click of a button? Yet here we are, and while there is no arguing that all this gadgetry has made our lives more pleasant, and provided us with advancements in the fields of industry, medicine, science, technology, and even agriculture, there is still very little talk about the downsides of all this technology.

As far as human interaction goes, not only does it happen online for most of the time, but even as people sit down together to have coffee, you will still catch them typing away at their phones, tables, or laptops. Everybody is obsessed with technology, and manufacturers are more than happy to oblige, cranking out a new model every 12 months, or even sooner. This creates the need for more resources and activities, such as mining for elements used to produce batteries, and more fossil fuels being burned to keep all those devices running.

Meanwhile, the average lifespan is longer than ever, and with over seven billion people on the planet, this creates an additional pressure on its resources. It seems as if all those clichés about things that we own end up owning us are starting to become a reality. 

With all this information available at our fingertips, we need to do more to educate ourselves and make the world around us a better place. Modern technology is supposed to be a tool that will help us achieve this, not just something that will keep us entertained and glued or brainwashed to our screens.

It’s pretty much impossible to know where all of this will go, and while we are still far away from an apocalyptic scenario seen in movies like The Terminator, we should pay more attention to our humanity. It is that very characteristic that will keep all of these fancy toys as means of making our lives better, instead of destroying them.
