HOW THE RAPID INDUSTRIAL GROWTH IN STALIN’S RUSSIA IS AFFECTING INDUSTRIAL WORKERS
Marc Ong 3I217
Stalin’s Five-Year Plans
Aimed to turn the USSR into a modern state
Greatly developed the USSR to compete with other countries, at the cost of worker welfare
Stalin’s “successes”
Rapid industrial growth of the USSR Massive improvements in infrastructure,
such as New cities Hydroelectricity Better transport
But in reality…
The Industrial Revolution neglected the welfare of the workers
The many advancements came at the cost of working conditions and general health
Use of Slave Labour
For big projects, slave labour was used for more efficient construction
Political workers and oppressed minorities were used as slaves
Many slaves died as a result
Poor Working Conditions
The emphasis on performance and results over welfare led to neglect of working conditions
Despite the USSR’s economic growth, wages dropped
Workers were overworked to reach high goals
Workers were exposed to much propaganda to prevent them from rebelling
Extremely Strict Rules
Workers who underperformed were fined, or even sent to labour camps
Workers who were late for work were sacked
THANK YOU
