CAREER

What I Learned in My First Year at Booz AllenNew beginnings are both exhilarating and overwhelming—and your fi rst year at Booz Allen will be no exception. Check out these tips from senior consultant Elizabeth Kelly for getting the most out of your Year One experience.

The fi rst year in a new job is when the learning curve is steepest and new relationships are being formed. It’s crucial that you make the right fi rst impression from

the get-go.

1. LEARN TO LOVE CAFFEINE Those quick trips to Starbucks are when many an offi ce friendship is born. Not every work event or social gathering is going to be right up your alley, but sometimes stepping outside the offi ce building for a quick coff ee (or green tea!) can lead to relationships that extend beyond the workplace.

2. DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECK YOUR EMAILS BEFORE YOU HIT SENDWe all want to avoid that sinking feeling you get when you notice an error in an email you just sent. It’s important to recognize that your emails are a representation of you and your work, so always be sure to proofread before sending. Always double check emails; you might fi nd it helpful to read them out loud (quietly!) to check for mistakes. It never hurts to have an extra pair of eyes, so if you are sending to a large audience, consider asking a colleague to proof your message.

3. BOOZ ALLEN IS A SMALL WORLD At 23,000+ employees, I was daunted by the size of Booz Allen when I fi rst joined the fi rm. It seemed like it would be an easy place to get lost in the mix. Walking into the 901 offi ce for CCG Launch I found myself surrounded by strangers. A year later my experience is drastically diff erent; I can hardly walk through a Booz Allen offi ce without

seeing a member of my admin team or a friend from a planning committee I am on. I have found that at Booz Allen each connection leads to another and your network multiplies before you know it.

4. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE PERKSA little-known perk of working here is that Booz Allen employees can enter to win tickets to cool events around the DMV each month. EventTickets.bah.com is just one of the many awesome benefi ts available to Booz Allen employees (like free tickets to the Phillips Collection and discounts on Verizon phone plans). Explore Discounts.bah.com and make sure that you are taking advantage of all of the fun benefi ts that come with working at Booz Allen Hamilton.

5. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF FACE TIMEAnd no, I’m not talking about the app, I mean in-real-life interactions. Meeting colleagues face-to-face is critical to success in your fi rst year. Emails and conference calls with people you don’t know can feel very transactional and impersonal, so bringing your whole self to the table (literally) will help you stand out. Schedule in-person meetings or ask to grab coff ee, and try to attend as many networking events as possible.

Elizabeth Kelly is a Senior Consultant who joined Booz Allen in July 2016. She’s originally from St. Louis, MO and graduated from George Washington University in 2015 with a B.A. in Organizational Science. She currently supports the IT Modernization team at the Department of Labor.

A S K A N A D M I N C O N N E C T I N G W I T H S E N I O R L E A D E R SWe all know the importance of networking, but in your fi rst days at a new job, it may seem intimidating to ask a senior leader for her time. So what’s the best way to get in touch? We asked Frances Chandler, a seasoned Administrative Professional, to share some tips.

1. Email the right addressesFrances suggests emailing the senior leader and copying their administrative professional’s address, found in Outlook's Address Book. (For Partners, this email address ends in _admin; for Principals, it ends in _asst.)

Copying the admin on your request means they’ll know to put a meeting on the calendar once the senior leader responds. If you don’t hear back within a few days, feel free to follow up.

2. Craft a concise emailIntroduce yourself briefl y, include your Functional Service Off ering (FSO), and say why you’d like to meet. Most importantly, make your request convenient—for example, “I would like to meet for 15 minutes at a time and location that’s best for you.” Some leaders, like Vice President Marlene Aquino, organize regular networking circles to get to know talent in smaller groups and may invite you to attend one of these gatherings.

3. Keep an open mind Many senior leaders began their careers at Booz Allen and have unique insights on how to succeed at the entry level. Conversations with senior leaders can also give you a better perspective on the fi rm’s broad scope of work. “If you don’t know everything [the fi rm’s] working on, you can’t say, ‘Oh, that’s interesting to me,’” Frances says.

Frances Chandler has been with the fi rm for over a decade and has the prestigious rating of Certifi ed Administrative Professional, marking her as a proven leader in all aspects of her fi eld. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and regularly facilitates trainings to prepare other administrative professionals to receive certifi cation.

Assembling a diverse roster of advisors can help you navigate diff erent career situations and needs, like your own personal board of directors. Check out our tips for putting together the “mentoring board” of your dreams below.

Wellness 101: Three Ways to Feel Healthier Today“Wellness” has become a popular buzzword among millennials and marketers alike. From the hygge craze to green juices and meditation apps, there always seems to be a new product or process that promises to “restore wellness” once and for all. But what exactly is wellness, and how can you implement it in your everyday life?

In practice, wellness is the pursuit of a healthy, balanced lifestyle focused on both the mind and the body. It’s the idea that if you take care of your mental and

physical health today, you’ll be happier in the present and healthier in the future. Roughly 50 percent of all American adults have one or more chronic conditions (such as heart disease, stroke and obesity)—many of which are completely avoidable if you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Check out our three tips for leading a healthier life.

1. EAT RIGHTYou’ve probably heard a thousand diff erent variations on what it means to“eat right.” Ignore the pseudoscience and consider taking a page out of food journalist Michael Pollan’s book: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

“Eat food” means eating real food (i.e. vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fi sh, and meat) and avoiding what Pollan calls “edible foodlike substances“ (i.e. highly processed foods with tons of preservatives). “Mostly plants” means aiming for fi ve or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and “not too much” means exactly what it sounds like. Although, Pollan also notes the importance of “everything in moderation, including moderation”—so treat yourself to that hot fudge sundae every once in a while!

Additionally, be aware of your daily sodium, sugar, and saturated fat intake. You can try using spices, fresh herbs, and acidity (like lemon juice) to elevate your favorite dishes, rather than extra butter or fried toppings. If you want to decrease your daily sugar intake, try scrapping your afternoon soda and making homemade fl avored

water instead (fresh mint and cucumbers make great add-ins). For even more healthy recipe ideas, check out the Booz Allen Healthy Cookbook Group on Yammer.

2. STAY ACTIVE—IN A WAY THAT’S FUN FOR YOUNews fl ash: you’re more likely to stick with an exercise regimen you actually enjoy. If you struggle to muster even an ounce of enthusiasm for your workouts, ask yourself whether you’re really doing what’s right for you (not what’s right for your friend who lives for her crack-of-dawn Crossfi t classes). And don’t worry about how “intense” your activity is either—even just 10 minutes of exercise a day can make a huge diff erence. So try walking home from work, checking out a beginner dance class, going for a hike with friends, or anything else that appeals to you. And learn more about the Booz Allen PowerUp challenge, as well. Sometimes the best way to stay active is to stay accountable!

3. PRACTICE MENTAL SELF-CAREMental health is just as important as physical health. Whether that means a daily meditation practice or just turning off your devices for a “digital detox,” fi nd a mental health habit that makes you feel happier and calmer. Decreasing anxiety today is one of the best ways to prevent chronic conditions in the future, plus it makes your day-to-day life so much better. For more mental health tips, check out the fi rm’s Employee Assistance Program through Lifeworks (id: booz-allen; password: 2520), which off ers a plethora of resources—including counseling, life coaches, and educational content.

With trips between client site and Booz Allen offices, you may find yourself asking, “What should I bring to work?” Caroline Vetrano, an associate who works on client site full time, shared the contents of her bag with us. Her tips? Pack a lunch box to save money, wear comfortable shoes during your commute, and never forget your laptop charger on client site. She also recommends packing a gym bag, since exercising after work is “a good way to decompress and take your mind off the day, especially if it was a particularly stressful one.”

WATER BOTTLE A water bottle is always a great idea, but during DC summers it’s practically mandatory. Proper hydration also keeps you alert during the workday.

TOILETRIESCoffee stains can happen to anyone. Keep mishaps at bay by packing a toiletries kit complete with a spare toothbrush, mouthwash, floss, stain remover, deodorant, hand sanitizer, band-aids, ibuprofen, and whatever else you need.

COMFORTABLE SHOESPro tip: Leave your nice shoes under your desk and pack comfy shoes for the commute. Why walk a mile in uncomfortable shoes if you don’t have to?

COFFEE THERMOSA big thermos of coffee (or any other hot drink) can make your morning commute that much better. In the summer, fill it with homemade cold brew or an iced matcha latte.

BOOZ ALLEN IDKeep your ID near other daily essentials (like your wallet or house keys) to make sure you don’t forget it—and as an added precaution, try to keep it in your work bag at all times when you’re not in the office.

The Booz Allen Events App: Helping You Get ConnectedThe Booz Allen Events App is a new way to connect with the Accelerator in real time, helping you plug into projects, speak with senior leaders at the firm, and find new ways to develop and apply your skills. The Accelerator App—housed within the Booz Allen Events App—provides details about everything happening in the Accelerator Program, whether social events, volunteering, or training opportunities. Keep reading for more information on how to use this new tool.

H O M ETo download the Accelerator App, visit the Apple or Android app store and search for “Booz Allen Events.” Once you’ve downloaded the Booz Allen Events App, you’ll see the Accelerator homepage, which features real-time status updates from senior leaders and colleagues. Scroll through your feed to like, comment, and add your own updates. You can also choose to import your LinkedIn profile and connect to your social media channels. If you have trouble downloading the app or finding the homepage, contact the Accelerator team.

C H A N N E L SThe app features an array of channels for discussing specific topics. Whether you want to learn more about our firm’s offerings, check in with your Accelerator Group, or chat with your Chief Service Officer, there’s a channel that suits your needs. You can post photos from events you attend, ask senior leaders for advice, and have conversations with your colleagues in real time. These activities are gamified, so as you check into events and engage with the app, you’ll earn points and win prizes.

A G E N D AWhen you open the app, you’ll find a preset agenda that’s already populated with required activities, like FSO-specific trainings and critical conversations with your career manager. Think of these prepopulated activities as a road map for your first year, showing you what courses and trainings you need to take to be successful at Booz Allen. Some of these trainings are available on multiple dates and you may have the option to select one that suits your schedule. Once you’ve completed these activities, they’ll be removed from your agenda.

E V E N T D E TA I L SIn addition to required activities, you can bookmark optional events ranging from writing workshops to community service opportunities. To learn more about an activity, select the event title. There you’ll find the date and time along with a detailed description. To bookmark the event for later, select “Add To My Agenda.” (Note: Exporting an event from the app to your agenda does not register you for the event. To register, you must visit Events.bah.com.) You’re encouraged to register for whatever interests you.

On one of my fi rst days at Booz Allen, a high-performing coworker named Walter suggested I get coff ee with as many people as possible. I accepted the challenge

and began asking everyone I met to coff ee—more than 40 people in total. Each colleague asked me a variation on the same theme: “What’s your story?”

The fi rst time I was asked this question, I froze. I’d been drawn to Booz Allen because I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to the Federal Government while gaining experience in a corporate environment. Even with that knowledge, I wasn’t sure how to discuss my background, convey my individuality, or explain how I hoped to grow. In other words, I had no sense of my personal brand.

Building your brand is something that takes time—but it doesn’t need to be diffi cult. Here are some words of wisdom gathered from CCG talent who have successfully defi ned their personal brands.

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORKNo matter the job—whether a client deliverable, an internal project, or a proposal—it’s essential to put forth your best eff ort with a good attitude. “The best way to add value as a new hire is to be enthusiastic,” says Annabel Jouard, a senior consultant. “It makes such a diff erence when someone is excited about their work—and that doesn’t mean faking interest in some tasks you’ll be assigned. It’s about taking pride in your work, soliciting feedback on what you’ve done, and applying that to future tasks.”

BE FLEXIBLEIt’s essential to have a growth mindset and be willing to learn, regardless of the tasks that come your way. “Be open to your fi rst project opportunity, even if it is outside of your comfort

P I TC H P E R F E C TYour personal brand should be communicated when you talk about what you do for Booz Allen. See page 15 for more.

zone,” says Alex Sproveri, an associate. “Your brand can only be strengthened by learning a new skill set or applying your existing talents to a new environment. Managers will see you as versatile and you will grow in value.”

FIND A ROLE MODELRemember—you don’t need to go it alone. Identify colleagues you admire and ask them for guidance. “You need to fi nd a person who is willing to answer all of your questions—someone who you want to emulate and whom you’re not afraid to approach,” says Emily Heller, a senior consultant. Attend Foundational Skills courses “Networking 101” or “Opportunities 101” (see pages 8 & 9) to learn how to make the most of your connections.

BE YOURSELFAt Booz Allen, we bring our whole selves to work, and an essential part your personal brand is sharing who you are. “It’s easy for Booz Allen networking to gravitate towards capabilities and markets,” says Juan Acosta, a consultant. But it’s equally important to discuss our lives outside of work. Be prepared to communicate well—no matter the subject or medium—by attending the Power Consulting Skills: Communications Methods course (see page 9).

Georgia Cavanaugh has been with the fi rm for over two years. She’s a passionate copyeditor, avid rock climber, and former English teacher whose motto is “say yes to everything.”

Building Your Personal BrandWhat’s your story? Your greatest ambition? What sets you apart? These seemingly simple questions can be hard to answer—but they don't have to be. Senior Consultant Georgia Cavanaugh shares ways to better defi ne your “personal brand.”

OFFICE DAY: JUST YOUR TEAMIf you know you’re only interacting with your team members that day, feel free to treat it like a “Casual Friday”—jeans, sandals, sundresses, and short sleeves are all fi ne, as long as they’re clean and presentable looking.

OFFICE DAY: MEETING WITH OTHER TEAMS OR LEADERSHIPIf you’re meeting with other teams and/or leaders, err on the side of “nicer business casual”—a sundress and sweater, khakis/dark wash jeans and a button down, or a silk top and pencil skirt are all reliable standbys.

OFFICE DAY: MEETING WITH CLIENTSThis one’s tricky—we recommend business attire to be on the safe side, and then you can adjust depending on the type of client environment you work in (for example, if their dress code is formal, do the same).

“Dress for your day” could mean anything from sweatpants to formal business attire. Avoid confusion (and sartorial faux pas) by checking out these foolproof guidelines below.

OFFSITE DAY: MEETUP WITH COWORKERSIf you’re meeting up in a coff ee shop or other off site location, we recommend “nicer casual”—i.e. jeans and a clean shirt are fi ne, but maybe leave the workout clothes at home.

OFFSITE DAY: WORK FROM HOME Working from home? Keep it as casual as you want! Unless you’re Skyping into a conference call, there’s no need to get fancy.

GROWTH

Accelerator Goes FirmwideIf you haven’t heard about the Accelerator yet—you will. Originally a CCG initiative, the program is now going fi rmwide, as we invest in our evolving Talent Marketplace.

The Accelerator aims to disrupt the current talent experience by giving you—our talent—the chance to rapidly grow your skills. This experience is meant to

help you better understand the fi rm’s functional service off erings, all while you’re meaningfully contributing to our business.

The Accelerator is diff erent things to diff erent people. First and foremost, if you have 50 percent or more available time, this is where you will thrive. The Accelerator gives you access to skill-building opportunities, connecting and networking events, leadership interaction, and a chance to explore projects beyond your functional skill areas. All the Accelerator asks for in return is your active engagement.

Specifi cally, the skill-building activities take place in the Accelerator Groups. There are currently four—Research & Analysis, Editorial, Proposal Engine, and Creative. Each of the Groups has a curriculum of training materials and assignments that you will need to complete. For example, in the Editorial Group, you will be asked to review the fi rm’s Brand Book and to write a thought piece as one of your assignments.

You could also be asked to complete business-sponsored tasks that are fi ltered to the appropriate Group. For instance, if a principal needs research performed on a specifi c topic, that task would be given to a team in the Research & Analysis Group. If a senior associate needs

help completing a proposal, then her task would be routed to the Proposal Engine Group and assigned to someone within that Group.

But this multi-faceted approach helps more than just available talent. It also supports those who manage talent and those who staff talent, so our whole fi rm functions more eff ectively.

In the case of career managers, the Accelerator engages direct reports while they are available so that managers can focus on fi nding talent for their next great project. It also helps to broaden talents’ networks, which can also aid them in fi nding their next role.

For resource managers, the Accelerator is an incredible source of available talent ripe for project placement, as they are actively advancing their skills and broadening their networks.

And perhaps most importantly, leaders in the fi rm can tap the Accelerator to support business needs. The available talent in the Accelerator can be leveraged for everything from data analysis and sharable thought pieces to proposal support.

If you fi nd yourself in the Accelerator, count yourself lucky! You have an exciting opportunity to interact with colleagues and leaders, and build your personal brand as a skilled professional.

BUDGETING 101Congratulations! You’ve earned your first paycheck from Booz Allen. What do you do now? Go shopping? Store it in your savings? Add it all to your retirement fund? If you create a good budget, you can do all of that and more. A budget you can stick to (and readjust as your financial picture changes) will help you develop smart spending habits that pay off in the long run.

M E E T YO U R S Q U A DAt Booz Allen, you have a whole team of people to support you on your career path. Each of these individuals is a resource and serves a specific purpose. Let’s review a few key players.

U N D E R STA N D I N G A H E A LT H S AV I N G S A C C O U N T

C A R E E R M A N A G E RThink of your career manager as your coach. He or she will provide advice as you begin searching for a long-term role and connect you with individuals across the firm. Meet regularly with your career manager to provide updates on your development. And be sure to share your goals with them so they can best support you.

P R O J E C T M A N A G E RAs the individual whom you will work most closely with on a day-to-day basis, your project manager can help you develop specific capabilities. Make sure to regularly ask for feedback and discuss areas for improvement with your project manager; they will also evaluate your performance during the review process.

R E S O U R C E M A N A G E RResource managers oversee available talent and assist in getting them staffed on projects. They are a wealth of information when it comes to job searching; you can further utilize their services by attending a resume or networking workshop. When looking for a project, be sure to send an up-to-date resume so that they can feature you in a Talent Spotlight.

P L A N F O R E M E R G E N C I E SIt’s also important to set aside a “rainy day” fund for any unexpected costs. Financial experts generally advise you to save about three to six months of net pay to help cover rent and other expenses in case you lose your job, undergo a health crisis, or have to financially support a family member. To avoid the temptation of spending rather than saving, consider automatically sending a percentage of your income directly to your savings account. Go to the Booz Allen Payroll Center to set up automatic transfers.

B U D G E T B E T T E R

Start by figuring out your monthly net pay. Then determine your fixed monthly bills (rent, student loans, etc.) and your variable monthly expenses (groceries, entertainment, etc.). After deducting those monthly expenses, determine how much of the remainder you want to save each month. When planning your budget, resources like the budgeting apps allow you to sync your financial accounts and manage your spending. You can allocate spending based on categories, set savings goals, and receive reminders when bill payments are due.

L I M I T YO U R D E B TWhile using a credit card can help you build credit, it’s important to avoid making purchases you can’t immediately pay off. If you already have high-interest credit card debt, put some of your savings towards your outstanding balances—paying off that debt should be one of your first financial priorities. If applicable, use the grace period before you’re required to start paying back student loans as a time to pay off any credit card debt, or to save as much as you can. If you budget your money carefully, you won’t feel a major drain on your paycheck when you start paying off your loans.

S AV E F O R R E T I R E M E N T

Retirement might feel like light years away right now, but the earlier you start saving for it, the more time your money has to grow. Booz Allen offers a 401(k) plan that allows you to automatically contribute a percentage of your income pre-tax—so you don’t have to pay taxes on the money until you withdraw it. Or you can set up Roth 401(k) after-tax contributions and pay taxes on the money now. You will need to decide which option is best for you and your retirement goals.

Additionally, the firm matches up to six percent of your 401-(k) contributions dollar for dollar. As a new hire, if you do not enroll in the 401(k) plan within 60 days of your hire date, you will be automatically enrolled in the 401(k) at a pre-tax contribution rate of six percent. You can learn more about the firm’s 401(k) plans from the 2017 Staff Benefit Guide.

A D M I N T E A M L E A DYour admin team lead is the senior leader for both you and your career manager. Your admin team lead will stay consistent as you move from project to project, and can connect you to great people across the firm.

A HSA will help you pay for—and save for—current and future medical expenses. A HSA is appealing because contributions are tax deductible and it comes with a triple tax perk—money deposited is tax free, earns interest tax free, and money withdrawn is tax free. You can contribute up to $3,400 for single coverage and $6,750 for family coverage annually, and your unused funds rollover each year. If you leave the firm or change healthcare plans, your account will move with you.

To be eligible for a HSA, you must have a Platinum, Gold, or Bronze healthcare plan through Aetna or Innovation Health with Booz Allen. You can elect a HSA

in Workday and choose your yearly contribution amount. You can change your HSA election amounts at anytime based on your healthcare needs.

If your needs change, or you decide you want a different health insurance plan, don't worry—open enrollment happens every fall. During open enrollment, you'll have the option to change your benefit elections. Keep an eye out for emails regarding open enrollment later this year.

For more information on HSAs, visit Totalrewards.bah.com.

TA L E N T P R O P E L L E RYour Talent Propeller will help you explore what Booz Allen has to offer and support you in expanding your network and building a unique career experience. They can help you with creating your functional network, charting the course to your next opportunity, or just learning about how to get around the firm. Let’s Build Your Big IdeaFor more than 100 years, Booz Allen’s best and brightest have dreamed up innovative solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Now you can contribute yours through a new, streamlined process for bringing our talents’ best ideas to life: the Incubator.

Consulting may not seem like a groundbreaking concept in 2017, but in 1914 it was downright revolutionary. Armed with the belief that an objective viewpoint was instrumental to conceiving great ideas, Edwin Booz designed a new type of company that allowed innovative thinkers (“consultants”) to apply their outsider’s perspective to other companies’ toughest problems. Fast-forward 103 years, and that tenet is just as important today—as a new hire, you bring an invaluable set of fresh eyes to the fi rm. But because you are new, you also might not know whom to turn to when you suddenly dream up a brilliant new strategy or solution.

That’s where the Booz Allen Incubator comes in. The Incubator is a new platform that allows anyone at the fi rm to submit their ideas for the Next Big Thing. Think of the Incubator as an ongoing startup competition (similar to TechCrunch Disrupt). The best ideas in the Incubator receive funding and are launched to market—just like a promising startup pitch in Silicon Valley.

Interested in submitting your bold ideas? To start, go to Incubator.bah.com and click on “submit an idea.” Proposals for scalable products, services, or market solutions (that align with Booz Allen’s strategic goals) will move into the three review stages of the Incubator. If

your concept gets the go-ahead after rigorous stakeholder review, it then moves into the fourth and fi nal stage of the Incubator. In just 12 weeks, your idea could go from a scribbled observation on a napkin to a fully viable business in the CCG portfolio.

Even if your submission doesn’t make it all the way to the fi nal stage, it could still come to life in other ways. It might be deployed to a single market, routed to another innovation channel (like Solutions Studio), or re-assessed once any oversights or tech challenges have been addressed.

Booz Allen’s leaders know how intimidating it can be to pitch a new concept or idea—especially if you’re brand new to the fi rm. The Incubator

removes that barrier by providing an equal-opportunity launch pad for submitting ideas to leadership. In addition to collecting ideas through the Incubator website, proposals are also sourced from the fi rm’s more established innovation hubs, including Garage challenges, iLabs, and hackathons.

Ready to become the next Mark Zuckerberg or Marissa Mayer? Submit your leading-edge ideas to the Incubator—or contact the Incubator team to fi nd out how you can get involved by emailing [email protected].

The Incubator makes it easy to submit your ideas. Once you've fi lled out the challenge form, you'll receive updates regarding your idea's status via email.

Have questions? Check out the process and learn more details about the Incubator by visiting the FAQ page. For additional information, email [email protected].

All the forms and resources you'll need for the Incubator process can be found online at Incubator.bah.com.

An elevator pitch is a 30-to-60-second spiel that spotlights your goals and skills. There are many opinions on what makes a great elevator pitch, but we’ve broken it down into three key components.

1. Skills. Your elevator pitch should open with your name and an explanation of what you do well. You can mention your strengths or the best compliment you’ve received about your skills. Try to mention what noteworthy projects you’ve already accomplished, as well. Whatever you say, it should help others easily identify how you fi t into the bigger picture of a project, market, or industry. Looking for more in-

depth advice? The fi rm’s Business Development Booster course features elevator pitch coaching. You can enroll in this fi ve day training on Learning.bah.com.

2. Goals. Share your career goals. If the person can help you with your goals, be specifi c and let them know—whether it’s an introduction to someone or a role on a project. For more advice, check out the Goal Setting Workshop in the Year One Course Catalog (see page 8).

3. Motivation. Explain the reasons for your goal and identify what motivates you to achieve it. You might be motivated by the people

you’re helping, or the urge to acquire subject matter expertise. When giving your pitch, speak at a consistent pace and in a personable tone. And try practicing with a mentor or friend fi rst, or in front of a mirror. Here’s a good example to get you started: “Hi, my name is Alex, and I’m a communications professional with a knack for persuasive storytelling. My colleagues often compliment my engaging presentations, so I’m looking for roles that would give me the opportunity to hone these skills. I’m inspired by startups and their products, so I want to help companies express their mission through compelling and relatable stories.”

Anatomy of a Coff ee Chat

Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch

As a new hire, you’ve probably been encouraged to get coff ee with colleagues and to start building your network. Coff ee chats can turn into mentoring relationships, invitations to fi rm events, and new project opportunities—all of which add valuable experiences to your career. But it can also be daunting to reach out to someone you’ve never met. Check out our short guide to mastering the art of the coff ee chat.

You’ll undoubtedly be quizzed during a happy hour about what you do for a living, so be prepared! These tips will make it easier to pitch yourself when connecting with new contacts.

Identify the person(s) you’d like to grab coff ee with and why you want to meet with them. AttendNetworking 101 to polish your skills beforehand.

7 Always follow up within 24 hours with a brief email expressing your gratitude. Mention a memorable part of your meeting, and reaffi rm any commitments either of you may have made. Keep in touch through email or more coff ee chats.

Ask for referrals of two to three other people at the fi rm whom they think you should meet. This a great way to continue to expand your network.

Get there early to fi nd a quiet space. Off er to buy the coff ee, and be respectful of their time.

Develop potential questions for the coff ee chat by researching the person’s background (e.g. LinkedIn, Delve, etc.). Identify what you want to know, learn, or request from the person.

Send a calendar invite for a 30-minute meeting near the person’s offi ce building. Convenience is key, and this move shows that you respect your colleague’s time.

Email a short introduction with a specifi c reason why you’d like to chat. Have a contact or interest in common? Include that in your note! *See page 3 for our “Interview with an EA” for more tips on how to successfully email leadership.

H O W D O YO U S H O W T H AT YO U C A R E ?We know our talent are dedicated to staying involved in their communities—so we created Booz Allen Cares, a central online platform meant to help you fi nd a cause you care about. Whether you’re searching for a volunteer opportunity or want to donate to a specifi c charity, Booz Allen Cares is your one-stop shop for fi nding more ways to foster your spirit of service.

When you log on to Booz Allen Cares, be sure to take the time to fi ll out your personal information. Highlight the skills you have to off er, list your nonprofi t board service, and more. It’s also where you can designate your contact information and T-shirt size, list your volunteer hour goals, and log your actual volunteer hours.

You can also apply for a Volunteer Service Grant (VSG) through Booz Allen Cares. The VSG application is accessible to talent who have successfully recorded 40 or more hours for their approved nonprofi t or educational organization in Booz Allen Cares. If approved, the VSG will be processed within 3 weeks of the approval date and sent directly to your preferred nonprofi t or educational organization.
