Tier 4 (General) student

You should read all of the information here carefully including information about

How to apply, Postgraduate studies, Fees, Healthcare surcharge and Biometric

information before clicking on ‘Apply now’.

Section 1 - Start

Question Answer

Are you currently in the UK? Select ‘Yes’ to this question then click on ‘Save and Continue’.

Do you have a legal representative for this application?

Select ‘No’ to this question if you are completing the form yourself and then click on ‘Save and Continue’. A legal representative is a solicitor or lawyer qualified to give advice on immigration law.

Email address

You will then be asked to provide an email address and create a password in order to save your application and come back to it later. Type your email address carefully along with a password which contains at least 8 characters, at least one letter and at least one number or symbol. You will need to repeat your password to confirm it and then click ‘Save and continue’.

You will then be asked to check your answers so far before clicking ‘Continue’.

Please note: If you wish to save your application at any time and return to it later then you

can select ‘Return to this application later’ at any point. This option is found at the top of

the screen in the ‘Application menu’. You will then be asked if you wish to download a

hard copy of your answers so far or if you wish to have a link sent to your registered email

address. In order to resume the application at a later date you must click on this link

through your emails.

Section 2 - Application

You will now need to enter details about the main applicant by clicking ‘Answer

questions about this person’. If you have dependants you can add them to the

application by clicking ‘Would you like to add another person to this application?’

and then selecting either ‘dependant child’ or ‘dependant partner or spouse’ and

then ‘Add’. Please see our other guidance documents on how to complete the

questions relating to your dependants.

Personal information

Question Answer

Title Select your title from the drop down list.

Given names Type all names here which are in your passport, other than your surname/family name (so include all middle names).

Family name Type your family name/surname here, as it is written in your passport and then click on ‘Save and continue’. If you only have one name, click on ‘I am not sure how to enter my name’. A new option will appear, ‘I do not have a given and family name – my name is one word.’ Click this and enter your one word name in the box provided.

Are you now or have you ever been known by any other name?

If you have always had the same name, and have never legally changed it, select ‘No’ to this question and then click on ‘Save and continue’. If you are or have been legally known by another name, select ‘Yes’ to this question and then click on ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked ‘What is your other name?’ You will be asked for your ‘Title’ and should select your title from the drop down list. You will then be asked for your ‘Given names’ and should type all names here other than your surname/family name (so include all middle names). You will then be asked for your ‘Family name’ and should type your family name/surname here. Click ‘Save and continue’. You will be asked again ‘Are you now or have you ever been known by any other name?’ and can then answer ‘No’ if you have not been known by any other names other than the ones previously stated. You can then click ‘Save and continue’.

Applicant contact details You will be asked to give your telephone number. If you have a mobile (cell), type the telephone number here. You should enter the full telephone number, beginning with the country code or area code, for example 441513421281 or 01518321281. Do not use spaces, +, or - symbols.

If you do not have a mobile telephone number, you should give a landline number. If you do not have a telephone number at all, simply enter ‘00000000000’ and include a cover letter with your documents when you submit them to explain that you do not have a telephone number. You will then be asked to give your home address. First, type the number of your accommodation followed by the name of your street. If you live in a flat or apartment, include the number of the flat/apartment as well as the building number. You will then be asked to give your town/city and your postcode. Remember to use CAPITAL LETTERS and to leave a space between the two parts of the postcode (for example, L12 3AB). If you wish to receive any letters from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) at a different address then you will need to select ‘I want to receive mail at a different address’ and provide the details of the alternative address. The IST strongly recommends using your accommodation address to receive mail from UKVI. You should then click on ‘Save and continue’.

What is your gender, as shown in your passport or travel document?

Select ‘Male’, ‘Female’ or ‘Unspecified’ from the available options.

What is your relationship status? Select your marital status from the drop down list then click on ‘Save and continue’.

Country of nationality Type your country of nationality in the box provided before selecting your country of nationality from the list that appears. If you have more than one nationality you should select ‘Add another nationality?’ and type your second nationality.

Date of birth Type your date of birth in the format shown; date/month/year. You must use the birth date given in your passport.

Country of birth Type your country of birth in the box provided before selecting the country from the list that appears.

Place of birth Type your place of birth exactly how it is written in your passport. This may be a province instead of a village, town or city. You should then click on ‘Save and continue’.

Passport details

Question Answer

Do you have your passport or a copy of the information on the photo page?

You must provide your passport with your application. If you are sending your passport with your application select 'Yes' and then click ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked to give your ‘Passport number or travel document reference number’. Type your document number in the box provided. You will then be asked for the ‘Place of issue’. Type the city or province where your passport was issued, as stated in your passport. You will then be asked for the ‘Issue date’ and the ‘Expiry date’. Type your issue date and expiry date in the format provided; day/month/year. You should then click ‘Save and continue’. If you are not sending your passport with your visa application then you should select ‘No’ to this question before clicking ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked ‘You do not have the information in your passport because’ and you will need to select the answer that best describes why you do not have your passport: If you have lost your passport or it was stolen then you should select ‘you have lost it/it was stolen’ and then click on ‘Save and continue’. If it has now expired select ‘the passport expired’ click on ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked to give details of your expired passport including ‘Passport number’, ‘Place of issue’, ‘Issue date’ and ‘Expiry date’ before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you are completing this application on behalf of a child born in the UK and you are unable to provide a passport for that person then you should select ‘you have never had a passport’ and then click on ‘Save and continue’. If you have never held a passport, select ‘you have never had a passport (for example, because you were born in the UK)’ and click on ‘Save and continue’. If you have previously made a visa application and your passport is still with UKVI then you should select ‘you have previously applied for leave in your own name, and your passport has not been returned’. Then click on ‘Save and continue’. If you have previously applied for a visa as part of a spouse’s or parent’s visa application, and your passport is still with UKVI, then you should select ‘you have already sent us your passport as part of someone else's’. You will then be asked ‘What is that person’s name?’. Give their full name including all given names and their family name. You will also be asked ‘That person’s date of birth’ and should type their date of birth in the format shown;

date/month/year. You must use the birth date given in their passport. You will also be asked ‘Reference number for that application’. This is not mandatory but if you have it, include it. Then click on ‘Save and continue’

Current status (1)

Question Answer

Do you currently have a visa or leave to remain?

*You must apply for your new visa before your current visa expires* You should select ‘Yes’ to this question to confirm that you have a visa at the time of making your new application. You will then be asked ‘What type of visa or leave to remain do you have? You should select the correct visa type from the drop-down list provided and then click on ‘Save and continue’. Most people should select ‘Tier 4 (General) leave to remain’. If the name of your current visa does not feature on the drop-down list then you should select the link ‘I have a different visa or leave to remain’ beneath the drop-down box and type the name of your current visa. If you are unsure what type of visa you currently hold, please contact the IST. If you selected ‘Yes’ you will then be asked ‘What is the start date of your current visa or leave to remain?’ You should type in your start date in the correct format: day/month/year. You will then be asked ‘What is the end date of your current visa or leave to remain?’ You should type in your visa end date in the correct format: day/month/year before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you do not currently have a visa or leave to remain then you should come and speak to the IST first about whether you can still make a visa application inside the UK. If your visa has expired but the IST says that you can still make a visa application inside the UK then you should select ‘no’ before clicking ‘Save and continue’. An alert will then appear stating ‘Your application is unlikely to be successful if you do not currently hold a visa or permission to stay.’ You should then click ‘Save and continue’.

Has your visa or leave to remain ever been revoked, cancelled or curtailed?

If your visa has previously been cut short or curtailed (cancelled) by UKVI (for example, if you have previously suspended your studies or been required to repeat without or with partial attendance) then you should select ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. Otherwise, if your visa has never been cancelled before then select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’.

Was your most recent leave as a Tier 4 student, as a Student or as a Postgraduate Doctor or Dentist?

If your current or most recent visa was a Tier 4 (General) student then you should select ‘yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked ‘Have you completed the course of study for which your most recent leave was granted?’ If you are applying to continue on the same course for which your most recent leave was granted you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have completed the course for which your current visa was issued for then you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked ‘Was the course more than 6 months in length?’ You should select ‘Yes’

or ‘No’ depending on the course length. You should use the dates listed on your original CAS or on your University student record. IF you select ‘No’ you should then click ‘Save and continue’. If you select ‘Yes’ you will then be asked ‘How can you prove that you have completed a course that was more than 6 months in length?’ You should select ‘Degree Certificate’ or ‘Official transcript or letter’ and you will need to provide this document to UKVI as evidence with your visa application. You should then click ‘Save and continue’. If your current or most recent visa was in a different visa category then you should select ‘No’ and click ‘Save and continue’. You will then move on to ‘Do you have a biometric residence permit? You will then be asked ‘During your current or last grant of leave in the UK, were you required to register with the police?’. If you were required to register with the police this will be written on your visa and you should have been given a police registration certificate when you first registered. You must ensure that your police registration certificate has your current address on it and you must submit this with your application. If you were required to register with the police then you should select ‘Yes’.

Course details (1)

Was your most recent leave as a Tier 4 student, as a Student or as a Postgraduate Doctor or Dentist?

If your current or most recent visa was in a different visa category then you should select ‘No’ and click ‘Save and continue’. You will then move on to ‘Do you have a biometric residence permit?’. If your current or most recent visa was a Tier 4 (General) student then you should select ‘yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked ‘Have you completed the course of study for which your most recent leave was granted?’ If you are applying to continue on the same course for which your most recent leave was granted or you are applying for the Tier 4 (Doctorate Extension Scheme), you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked ‘Have you started the course of study for which your most recent leave was granted?’ If you have not started the course for which your current visa was issued, you should select ‘No’. You will then be asked ‘Do you have a biometric residence permit?’ If you have started your course you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked ‘Have you completed more than 6 months of the course?’ If you have completed less than 6 months of your course, you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have competed more than 6 months of your current course you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked ‘How can you prove that you have completed more than 6 months of the course?’ In most cases, you should select ‘My sponsor has confirmed this information on my CAS’ as this information will be shown on your CAS statement through the course start and end dates. You should then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have completed the course for which your current visa was issued for then you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked ‘Was the course more than 6 months in length?’ You should select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ depending on the course length. You should use the dates listed on your original CAS or on your University student record. If you select ‘No’ you should then click ‘Save and continue’. If you select ‘Yes’ you will then be asked ‘How can you prove that you have completed a course that was more than 6 months in length?’ You should select ‘Degree Certificate’ or ‘Official transcript or letter’ and you will need to provide this document to UKVI as evidence with your visa application. You should then click ‘Save and continue’.

During your current or last grant

of leave in the UK, were you

required to register with the

police?

This question will only appear if you are a national of a country which is required to register with the Police in the UK. If you were required to register with the police this will be written

on your visa and you should have been given a police registration

certificate when you first registered. You must ensure that your

police registration certificate has your current address on it and

you must submit this with your visa application.

If you were required to register with the police on your current visa

then you should select ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’.

If you are not required to register with the police on your current

visa then you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’.

Do you have a biometric residence permit?

If you have been issued with a biometric residence permit (BRP) and you are providing this with your visa application then you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked to ‘Enter your permit number’. You should type the number found on the top of your BRP in the box provided and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have been issued with a biometric residence permit (BRP) but you are not able to provide this with your visa application (for example, it has been lost or stolen) you should select ‘No, I had a biometric residence permit for my most recent leave, but I do not have it now’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have never been issued with a biometric residence permit then you should select ‘No, I did not have a biometric residence permit for my most recent leave’ and then click ‘Save and continue’.

What is your current National

Insurance number?

If you have been issued with a National Insurance number so that you can work in the UK, you should enter it here. A National Insurance Number is made up of numbers and letters in the following format: AB 01 23 45 C. If you have been issued with multiple National Insurance numbers, click ‘+ Add another National Insurance number?’ and include it. If you do not have a National Insurance number, or have been issued with a temporary number (usually in the format: TN 01 01 01 M (orF), then you should select the box labelled ‘I do not have a National Insurance number, or I have a temporary one’.

English language

Question Answer

Have you studied in the UK as a Tier 4 (Child) student?

If you have never studied on a Tier 4 (Child) student visa then select ‘No’. You should then click ‘Save and continue’. You will then be asked ‘If you are studying at a higher education institution, have they assessed that you meet the English language requirement, or that you are a 'gifted student'?’ If you have previously studied in the UK whilst holding a Tier 4 (Child) student visa then you should select ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you select ‘Yes’, you will then be asked ‘Have you studied an academic course in a majority English speaking country that is equivalent to a UK degree or above?’ This question is asking about your previous qualifications. If you have not studied an academic course in a majority English speaking country then select ‘No’ and click ‘Save and Continue’. If you have previously studied a degree taught in English in an English majority speaking country then select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked ‘Which country did you study in?’ You should start to type the country where you studied the degree level qualification and then select the country once it appears. If the country that you have typed does not show up then it may not be classed as a majority English speaking country by UKVI. For a list of majority English speaking countries visit https://www.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-of-english. You will then be asked ‘What evidence will you provide from your university to prove you meet the English language requirement?’ You will need to provide evidence of your previous qualification taught in English with your visa application. If you are providing your degree certificate as evidence of this then you should select ‘Certificate of qualification proving English language requirement’. If you are providing your transcript of results then you should select ‘Transcript of results proving your English language requirement’. You should then click ‘Save and Continue’. If you have not studied an academic course in a majority English speaking country then select ‘No’ and click ‘Save and Continue’.

If you are studying at a higher

education institution, have they

assessed that you meet the

English language requirement, or

that you are a 'gifted student'?

Your CAS should state how you can demonstrate your English Language ability. If you are a continuing student and your CAS was issued by Student Administration then you should select ‘yes’ to this question. You should then click ‘Save and Continue’. If you are a new student and your CAS was issued by our International Admissions Team then you should select ‘yes’ to this

question. You will also need to check with Admissions what qualifications or certificates they used to assess your English ability. You will then need to include this with your supporting documents. You should then click ‘Save and Continue’.

Additional Information

Question Answer

Have you ever received any public funds (money) in the UK?

You should not be receiving any public funds. Public funds include a range of benefits, tax credits and housing assistance, paid by the state to people on a low income.

It is a condition of your visa that you are not entitled to receive public funds whilst in the UK on a Tier 4 (General) student visa. Therefore, you should select ‘No’ to this question and then click ‘Save and Continue’. If you are receiving public funds then you must select ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have selected ‘Yes’ we recommend that you email the IST before submitting your application. You will then be asked ‘Tell us which public funds you have received’. You will then need to select each of the public funds displayed to identify which public funds you are or have previously been receiving before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you are not sure if you are receiving ‘public funds’, a list of all public funds will be displayed if you select ‘Yes’ so that you can check this.

Criminal or unspent convictions

Do you have any of the following, in the UK or in a different country?

This question is asking if you have ever been found guilty of a crime by a legal system in any country around the world. If you have never been convicted of a crime, you should select ‘No, I have never had any of these’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If one of the offences does apply to you then you should select that offence and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you do need to select one of these offences then the IST recommends that you contact us to discuss this further before submitting your visa application. If you have more than 1 offence, once you have entered the details for the first offence you will then be asked ‘Do you have any other...’ and you should answer ‘Yes’ before giving the details of the next offence. You should select ‘No’ and ‘Save and continue’ if you have no other offences.

This question is asking if you have ever been involved in very serious crimes against other people in times of war and conflict. If you have never been involved in such offences you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have been involved in such offences you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked to give ‘More information about your involvement’. You must then give details of your involvement using the space provided before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you do need to select ‘Yes’ then the IST recommends that you contact us to discuss this further before submitting your visa application.

Have you ever been involved in, supported or encouraged terrorist activities in any country?

This question is asking if you have ever been involved in terrorism or encouraged terrorism by your words or actions. If you have never encouraged terrorism you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have encouraged terrorism you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked to give ‘More information about your terrorist activity’. You must then give details of your involvement using the space provided before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you do need to select ‘Yes’ then the IST recommends that you contact us to discuss this further before submitting your visa application.

Have you ever been a member of, or given support to, an organisation which has been concerned in terrorism?

This question is asking if you have ever been involved in a terrorist group or given support in some way, by way of words, actions or financial support. If you have never been involved in terrorism you should select ‘No’ and then click ‘Save and continue’. If you have encouraged terrorism you should select ‘Yes’. You will then be asked to give ‘More information about your terrorist activity’. You must then give details of your involvement using the space provided before clicking ‘Save and continue’. If you do need to select ‘Yes’ then the IST recommends that you contact us to discuss this further before submitting your visa application.

This can be found on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) statement.
