About the presentation

Electrical Safety is a concern in almost every

organizations. The risks related to electrical

safety are often managed in an isolated way.

www.verde.co.in

This presentation will help organisations to

manage Electrical Safety risks in a more

structured fashion.

Page 3: How to control electrical safety risk

1. Establish an Electrical Safety Program

2. Publish an Electrical Safety Manual

3. Perform a Site Assessment

4. Identify and Document Hazards

5. Conduct an Electrical Hazard Analysis (Shock, Arc Flash

& Arc Blast)

6. Establish Flash Protection Boundaries

Why Electricity is dangerous?

Electricity can be dangerous because:

• People need to use or work with electricity all the times

www.verde.co.in

• As a form of energy it can seriously harm people when electrical current passes

through the human body

As a form of energy, electricity is an invisible danger

Physiological effects of electricity

• Generation of Heat – Most basic and easy-to-understand effect of electricity onliving tissue; current make it heat up. If the amount of heat generation is sufficient, thetissue may be burnt. Electricity has the ability to burn tissue well beneath the skin ofvictim, even burning internal organs.

• Electric shock – Effect of electric current on body in terms of hazard, affects nervecells that process and conduct the multitude of signals responsible for regulation of

cells that process and conduct the multitude of signals responsible for regulation ofmany body function together to allow it to sense, move, respond, think, andremember.

• Effect on nervous system – Electric current of sufficient magnitude effect nervoussystem and prevent both human reflex and muscles. Contraction of muscles occurwhen a victim contacts an energized conductor with his hands. Clenching action forcethe hand to grasp the wire firmly, thus worsening the situation securing better contactwith the wire. Medically this condition of muscle contraction is called tetanus.

How can you prevent loss and protect

yourself and your workplace?

By using one or more of the following measures in the field of electrical safety. i.e.

www.verde.co.in

• Electrical Safety Audit

• Lightning & Surge Protection Audit

• Electrical & Fire Safety Audit

• Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)

Page 10: How to control electrical safety risk

Why??

• Electrical Safety Audit – Electrical Safety Audit is an effective tool to identify

potential electrical hazards, flaws in design system, maintenance system and to

provide suitable remedial measures in order to control risks exists in your electrical

system.

www.verde.co.in

• Lightning & Surge Protection Audit– Lightning and Surge Protection Audit is an

effective tool to identify and assess existing lightning protection system (if any) in the

premises and suggesting suitable measures to bridge the gap. This can protect your

workplace from the adverse effect lightning and surge.

Page 11: How to control electrical safety risk

Why??

• Electrical & Fire Safety Audit- Electrical & Fire Safety audit is an effective tool for

assessing electrical & fire safety status in your workplace. This audit helps to identify

the areas for improvement in electrical & fire safety measures in prevention,

protection and mitigation system in case of electrical fire.

www.verde.co.in

• Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)– Hazardous area can also be classified as

those locations where electrical equipment might be installed and which, by their

nature, might present a condition which could become explosive. HAC will help you to

ensure that the electrical equipment is properly selected, installed, operated and

maintained to provide a safe system.

Do You Know??

• According to Fire Protection Association (FPA) UK and National Fire Protection

Association (NFPA) USA , globally in industries, around 8% of all fatalities are due to

accidents caused by electricity.

www.verde.co.in

• In India over 40% of the fire incidents are initiated by electrical causes such as short

circuits, overloading, loose electrical connections.

Page 15: How to control electrical safety risk

Electrical Safety Audit?

• Independent Electrical Safety Audit is an effective way of managing the loss by

identifying both good practices and areas for improvement within an organisation’s

electrical safety management system.

www.verde.co.in

It is true that electrical hazards can be identified and assessed in general safety audit,

but comprehensive electrical safety audits can provide a thorough review of electrical

system which can also identify potential electrical hazards, flaws in design system,

maintenance system etc in your workplace.

Page 16: How to control electrical safety risk

Electrical Safety Audit

Electrical Safety Audit is carried out by way of physical examination, sample

examination, sample tests, review of records and discussion with various departments & plant personnel

Page 17: How to control electrical safety risk

Electrical Safety Audit Objectives

• To ensure that electrical safety system fully satisfy the legal requirements

• To review and critically assess the existing electrical safety system to prevent and

control

www.verde.co.in

• the hazards in the facility with a view to suggest improvement

• To recommend the measures for improving effectiveness for implementation of

electrical safety systems, procedures, plans and programs and also for improving the

existing procedures / setting of new procedures if required

Standards & Codes followed during

Electrical Safety Audit

• Electricity Act, 2003

• Indian Electricity Rules, 1956 (Amended 2005)

• Central Electricity Authority Regulations, 2010

• Relevant NFPA Codes

www.verde.co.in

• Relevant NFPA Codes

• Relevant OISD Standards

• Relevant Indian Standards

• Best Engineering Practices

• Industrial Best Practices

General Scope for Electrical Safety Audit

• Verification of statutory compliance with respect to the regulations (national

and state level) relating to electrical safety.

www.verde.co.in

• Review of electrical systems and procedures usually followed and physical

inspection to identify electrical hazards like fire, overloading.

• Identify areas of overloading by load current assessments and comparing

against cable’s current carrying capacity to suggest electrical safety solutions.

Page 20: How to control electrical safety risk

General Scope for Electrical Safety Audit Cont…

•Review of insulation status of cables by carrying out sample basis insulation resistance

checking.

www.verde.co.in

•Review of hazardous area and suggestion for flameproof electrical equipment & fire

resistant cables.

•Review of electrical preventive maintenance system (checking of documentations) for

necessary suggestions and review of electrical accidents if happened in the past to

identify the root causes and suggestions.

Page 21: How to control electrical safety risk

•Review of lightning protection system (need, adequacy, installation and maintenance) as per standard norms.

•Review of earthing system (installation and maintenance aspects) to realize present safety status and providing necessary suggestion.

safety status and providing necessary suggestion.

•Review of importance given to electrical safety in the safety policy, safety committee, continuous electrical risk identification etc. for necessary improvement.

•Recommendation for operational questions & good practice of electrical maintenance in your workplace.

Few electrical safety

tests/measurements carried out during

audit:

• Insulation Resistance Checking

• Insulation Resistance Checking

• Load current assessments

• Earth resistance check

Benefits of Electrical Safety Audit

• Ensure compliance to various applicable statutory requirements

• As is status or gap Identification for future Improvement

• Reduces Accidents and Increases Productivity

• Re-iterates Management’s Commitment to Electrical Safety
