JEE Main 2014 highest scorer Pramod Vakacharla got 355 marks out of total 360 and outsmarted over 13 lakh candidates who took JEE Main 2014. Pramod

says he missed the perfect score of 360 as he marked a wrong bubble for a Physics question in the OMR Answer sheet of JEE Main.

In this exclusive interview with Careers360, Pramod Vakacharla shares his preparation strategy for JEE Main, his schedule which included 11 hours of daily rigorous studies and his feelings on his outstanding success.

His father V Bhagwan, who is a business man, says that his son has been much disciplined with regards to his studies for the last 4-5 years and scored 9.8 CGPA in his Class X.

In this interview, Pramod also shares that hectic prepara-tion schedule bars him from online chatting with friends and operating his Facebook account. He is also an avid fan of Hollywood action movies like ‘Fast & Furious’.

Careers360: Congratulations for your outstanding performance in JEE Main 2014! How did you make it possible?

Pramod Vakacharla: Thank you. I could do it with my serious preparations and support from my teachers and parents.

Careers360: What was your overall and section scores in JEE Main 2014?

Pramod Vakacharla: My overall score is 355. I scored 120 in both Mathematics and Chemistry, and my Physics score was 115.

Careers360: That is indeed a great achievement! This means that you made only one incorrect answer out of 90 questions in JEE Main paper.

Pramod Vakacharla: Yes. Fortunately, I could do all questions in the paper except one question in Physics. Actu-ally, I knew the right answer to that Physics question also, but marked the wrong bubble in the OMR Answer sheet.

Careers360: Your performance in JEE Main brings you the title of ‘perfect scorer’. Did you expect this high score before your exam on April 6, 2014?

Pramod Vakacharla: Actually, I had been scoring above 320-330 in all my practice tests before JEE Main. So, I was expecting a similar score in the JEE Main result also. But, I was not sure that I would score highest in the JEE Main 2014.

Careers360: Now that you are the topper of JEE Main, what do you think was the key factor behind your spectacular performance in this most competitive Engi-neering exam?

Pramod Vakacharla: My focus was never on the marks. I always dedicated my time and energy on solving 100 per-cent questions in my test series. But, I never expected that I will do almost all questions correctly in the actual test.

Careers360: What was your preparation strategy and routine study period for JEE Main?

Pramod Vakacharla: I dedicated around 11 hours daily on studies. I spent 4 hours on my daily classes and rest 7 hours on self study. Overall, I divided the daily preparations into three parts – 3 hours each for Physics and Mathematics and 4 hours for Chemistry. Since I put up in the hostel of Narayana Sri Chaitanya IIT Academy, Vijaywada, I consult my teachers whenever I have doubts on any question or any topic. I naturally go and discuss with them random problems related to my preparations.

Careers360: Which subject was easiest and which was the toughest?

Pramod Vakacharla: Since my favorite subject is Chem-istry, I found the questions relatively easier. Physics was a bit difficult and Mathematics was of average difficulty level.

Careers360: So, it was quite a hectic preparation schedule for you. Could you find time to connect with your friends on Facebook during your preparation?

Pramod Vakacharla: No. I could not get any free time to chat online with my friends during my preparation. I last logged in to my Facebook page some 6 months back. But, sometimes I watched Telugu movies or a Hollywood flick. Sometime, I also played Badminton which is my favorite sports.

Careers360: Which is your favorite Hollywood movie?

Pramod Vakacharla: Hmm… I like many Hollywood movies. But, my favorite is ‘Fast and Furious’. I have watched all 6 parts of this movie and eagerly waiting to watch the next sequel (The 7th installment of upcoming 2015 American action film).

Careers360: So, once you crack JEE Advanced, which Engineering branch would you like to opt and which IIT will you prefer.

Pramod Vakacharla: Though, I am yet to get into JEE-Advanced rankings, I would prefer to study Computer Science Engineering (CSE) in IIT Bombay.

Careers360: How do you plan your preparation for JEE Advanced?

Pramod Vakacharla: I have already begun my prepara-tions and will be maintaining my study schedule as previ-ously. I will try to put in an extra hour or so for more practice in Physics. My test series for JEE Advanced are on and I am fully concentrating on doing well in JEE Advanced 2014.

JEE Main 2014 Topper Kishalay Raj scored 350 out of total 360 marks in JEE Main paper. The Jamshedpur boy scored perfect 120 in Mathematics and made just

one mistake each in Physics and Chemistry sections to fetch an overall score of 350.

In this interview with Careers360, Kishalay says his focus has been JEE Advanced 2014 since the very early stages of JEE preparations and as a result he did not find JEE Main 2014 paper any difficult. His father Rajesh Srivastava, who works with Tata Steel in Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) and mother Kshama Srivastava, who is a homemaker, say that their son has been self-disciplined in his studies and they never needed to guide him on his routine study schedules.

Highly interested in computer games, Kishalay wants to follow the footsteps of Flipkart (Online Retail platform) founders Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, who made their venture synonymous to online shopping. Here he talks on his JEE preparations, future dreams and his love for computer games.

Careers360: What is your overall and subject wise score in JEE Main 2014? What was your class X marks?

Kishalay Raj: My overall score is 350. I scored 120 marks in mathematics and 115 in both Physics and Chemistry in JEE Main 2014. I had around 98 % in my class X from ICSE board.

Careers360: How did you prepare for JEE Main 2014?

Kishalay Raj: I did not specifically prepare for JEE Main 2014. Since the beginning of my preparation, I was focused on JEE Advanced only. This is because syllabus for JEE Main is same as JEE Advanced. By covering all topics under three subjects for JEE Advanced, I automatically covered the entire JEE Main syllabus.

Careers360: Do you mean that preparation for JEE Advanced since the very early stages of your preparation made you score high in JEE Main as well?

Kishalay Raj: Yes. It definitely did. I was confident that JEE Advanced preparation will get me through JEE Main automatically. Still, I was expecting around 320-330, but did not expect this high score.

Careers360: How much time did you devote to your studies during JEE preparations?

Kishalay Raj: I used to study about 8-9 hours a day dur-ing my JEE preparation phase. I would go for regular classes in Prerna Institute in Jamshedpur for 3-4 hours and rest of the time I regularly spent on self study at my home. I avoided skipping any topic under JEE and my Class XII syllabus. The consistency in my preparation boosted my confidence for the paper.

Careers360: How did you divide your preparation schedule among the three subjects of JEE Main? What are your strong and weak areas?

Kishalay Raj: I divided my time equally among the three subjects. Though Physics is my strongest subject, I put equal emphasis on all three. My strong area is my ability to

approach quantitative part of all subjects like Mechanics portion in Physics. But, I find qualitative analysis in Chem-istry a bit difficult.

Careers360: Besides studies, what do you do? Do you like sports?

Kishalay Raj: I play computer games whenever I get free time. I like scoring highest in each of my new game! In outdoor games, I prefer football. Sometimes, I watch Hol-lywood movies also.

Careers360: Which is your favorite Hollywood movie? Which movie did you watch last time?

Kishalay Raj: My favorite movie is ‘Inception’. I watched ‘Iron Man’ about two months back.

Careers360: Once you crack JEE Advanced, which Engineering branch would you like to opt for?

Kishalay Raj: I would like to go for Computer Science Engineering at IIT Bombay.

Careers360: Why do you want to study Computer Sci-ence Engineering?

Kishalay Raj: I like playing with computers. Also, my idols Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, who founded Flipkart and made it the biggest online shopping platform, are Com-puter Science Engineers. I want to follow their footsteps and establish my own venture after I complete my Engineering from IIT.

It seems that getting a perfect score in examinations is a custom for JEE Main 2014 topper Kushal Babel, who got 345 marks out of 360 in the exam. The 18 years

old boy had secured a perfect 10 CGPA in his high school examination from The Study Senior Secondary School in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Happy with his JEE Main 2014 result, Kushal, who scored 115 in each section of the test, talks to Careers360 and shares his success mantra for the outstanding performance and the guidance that his family members provided in the process.

Kushal also talks about the dual benefit of pursuing his hobby i.e., playing badminton and how skipping badminton sessions due to a time-consuming study schedule was bar-tered with pending dine out birthday parties of friends.

Careers360: Congratulations for your outstanding performance in JEE Main 2014! How did you make it possible?

Kushal Babel: Thank you. My success mantra for out-standing performance in JEE Main 2014 was based on two components. To stay passionate and enthusiastic towards my study schedule and treating the laid schedule study plan as my “happy and fulfilling study hours” was the first part of the said component. This academic exercise of mine included having clarity on the basic concepts for each subjects-Phys-ics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The second component of my success mantra was to take my exam preparation to the next level. For this, I set a dead-line for solving questions so as to learn and practice time

management for the entrance examination. I used to solve nearly 50-60 mathematical questions per day and with pro-gressing days, I gained speed in solving questions. The daily practice of solving puzzles enabled me to spot the difficulty level of a question and how much time has to be devoted for solving the question.

Careers360: What was your overall and section scores in JEE Main 2014?

Kushal Babel: My overall score for the JEE Main 2014 Exam was 345 and for each section it was 115.

Careers360: What was the role of your family mem-bers in guiding you toward a spectacular performance in this most competitive Engineering exam?

Kushal Babel: Preparing for the intermediate examina-tion as well as for JEE Main 2014 was a time demanding schedule. At times, I used to get tense and worried about jug-gling with my study schedule for two most important exami-nations. 15-20 days prior to intermediate examination, I completely diverted my focus for JEE Main preparation.

Adapting with alternate study schedule was guided by my elder sister Sakshi Babel. After my intermediate examina-tion, she was always at my side to help me.

My sister, who is also pursuing her M.Tech from IIT Delhi, stressed on the importance of smart approach towards sequence of attempting questions. It was her precious exam tip to attempt easy question first followed by less difficult and the toughest to be solved in the end with a calm mind.

I would like to add that I experienced no family pressure to crack JEE Main. My father was equally attentive for my overall personality development. He was cautious that I do not grow up as a bookworm, but as a person with good com-munication and leadership skills.

All credit goes to my father for helping me to explore my hobby i.e., playing badminton. Both of us used to play bad-minton for at least one hour for most of the days. Indulging with the hobby, which came to me in a “disguise of a casual sport”, helped me to stay fit and cope with exam preparation in a refreshing style.

Careers360: What was your preparation strategy and routine study period for JEE Main?

Kushal Babel: I used to study for 10 hours a day including my coaching classes. The ten-hours slot was diversified into subject-wise studies. After my intermediate examination, I followed a rigorous study schedule.

I revised important notes of Chemistry subject on daily basis. For Physics and Mathematics, it was routine practice of solving physics numerical and mathematical questions keeping in mind the time deadline. And, I ensured that I attempted questions within a set timeline.

As I already said, I used play badminton every day. How-ever, as JEE Main 2014 exams approached, I had to skip badminton sessions on a number of days. Thus, whenever there was scope of leisure for 2-3 hours once in a fortnight, I smartly utilized the time. Pending birthday treats from my friends was replaced or you can say bartered with the skipped badminton sessions.

Careers360: Which subject was easiest and which was the toughest?

Kushal Babel: For me, Physics was the easiest while Mathematics was the toughest.

Careers360: So, it was quite a hectic preparation schedule for you. Could you find time to connect with your friends on Facebook during your preparation?

Kushal Babel: I am not very active on social media web-site Facebook. To connect with friends, I simply give them a call or meet them in-person.

Careers360: So, once you crack JEE Advanced 2014, which Engineering branch would you like to opt and which IIT will you prefer?

Kushal Babel: For engineering branch, my sole prefer-ence is Computer Science and my choices for IITs are IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.

Careers360: How do you plan your preparation for JEE Advanced 2014?

Kushal Babel: I have allotted four hours for JEE Advanced preparation. Again the four-hour slot is diversi-fied into subject-wise studies.

Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for JEE Main 2014?

A Career is a Life How to crack Jee main 2015: know success mantras from toppers

Prathu Baronia: My preparation strategy for JEE Main 2014 was simple and traditional. I did not adhere to a strict day-to-day preparation strategy for a particular topic or subject. I started preparing for this national level engineering exam along with my intermediate examination.

Although I did not follow a time-bound deadline for any specific section to ace my JEE Main preparation but I solved a lot of mathematics questions on daily basis. Solving math-ematical questions is an activity for me with which I love to indulge. So much is my love and interest in the subject that the moment I see a math question, I am tempted to solve that.

Careers360: Among Physics, Chemistry and Maths, which section/subject were you most comfortable with?

Prathu Baronia: Mathematics is the subject with which I was most comfortable. I attempted all the questions from the subject in the JEE Main 2014 exam.

Careers360: Did you turn to any recreational activity before appearing for JEE Main 2014 exam?

Prathu Baronia: Listening to Bollywood songs is mind-healing therapy for me. The activity helped me to bust exam nervousness.

Careers360: Were you confident about cracking the exam?

Prathu Baronia: Yes, I was pretty sure about securing good marks in the exam.

Careers360: How did you find the difficulty level of JEE Main 2014 exam? Did it need any ‘smart’ prepara-tion on your part?

Prathu Baronia: JEE Main 2014 exam was moder-ate in terms of difficulty level. I followed a planned time management strategy during the exam and skipped difficult questions. First, I tried to solve easy questions correctly. The strategy saved my time and helped me boost confidence after hitting a few right answers. In the second round, I attempted the difficult ones and to my surprise I could solve most of them.

Careers360: Now you would be appearing for JEE Advanced. What is your strategy for the same?

Prathu Baronia: Again, I have not devised any unique strategy for JEE Advance 2014. I will prefer studying ran-dom topics from any of the three subjects. I am confident to crack the next level, i.e, JEE Advance 2014 also.

Careers360: Which would be your preferred Engi-neering branches in IIT if you crack JEE Advance 2014?

Prathu Baronia: I have inclination towards two engi-neering branches- Robotic and Science Cloning.

Careers360: It would have been hectic preparation for JEE Main during last few weeks. Do you also watch movies? Which movie did you watch recently and when?

Prathu Baronia: Yes, it indeed was time consuming preparation and demanded for all seriousness. Still, I found time to watch Bollywood movies. The last movie I watched was “Shadi ke Side Effects” after my CBSE intermediate examination.

“Hard work is not enough. There should be a plan of action”. This is the mantra that 17 years old Sau-rabh Pinjani from Bangalore followed to crack

what is one of the formidable barriers toward the road to IITs i.e the JEE Main 2014. Sitting first time for the exam, Saurabh has scored a total of 325 out of 360 in the first round of the JEE exam, which is well beyond the Cutoff predictions declared after the JEE Main 2014 exam.

Now looking forward to JEE Advanced 2014 with the same zeal, Saurabh talks to Careers360 about his strategy, focus and will to bring down the first wall.

Careers360: Congratulations! What does it mean for you to be in JEE Main 2014 toppers’ club?

How sauraBH Pinjani scored 325 out of 360

Jee MaIn 2014 topper IntervIews

Saurabh: Thank you. Though, I was confident of break-ing the 300 barrier, still it is a really nice feeling to actually cross that mark. To me, my result has alerted me to be more focused for the next stage of the exam. But, I am trying not to be too happy. I am definitely not nervous but I am currently more focused towards JEE Advanced.

Careers360: What is your overall and section-wise score?

Saurabh: My total score is 325. I have scored 115 in phys-ics, 110 in Mathematics and 100 in Chemistry.

Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for JEE Mains 2014?

Saurabh: I started preparing for JEE since I was in grade 9. So, it’s been four years of planned preparation for this exam now. Physics was my strongest subject. However, I don’t claim the same level of interest in Chemistry as I feel if you interpret the question wrong in this subject, you will always end up with the wrong conclusion.

Careers360: What was your exam taking strategy for JEE Main 2014?

Saurabh: JEE Main 2014 has 90 questions to be solved within a 180 minutes duration. Therefore, a candidate gets exactly 2 minutes per question. I had prepared myself for this pressure by practicing as much as possible. My strategy was to attempt Physics first, followed by Chemistry and Maths.

Careers360: How did you mentally prepare yourself for JEE Main?

Saurabh: The main point is not to lose concentration. It is important to know about your strengths and weaknesses. Hard work is not enough. There should be a plan of action.

Careers360: So, did you do anything for recreation?

Saurabh: I am an avid fan of Mahabharat. I believe it gives you an insight into life. I watched it most often. Also, I play squash in my free time. It helps me to relax.

Careers360: Did you also join any coaching institute? How it helped you?

Saurabh: Yes, I took coaching classes from FITTJEE. It taught me to have a “You can do it” attitude.

Careers360: What role did your family play in the process?

Saurabh: There was absolutely no pressure from the fam-ily. My Father is content with hard work. His dream for me is to study further.

Careers360: Which are your dream IITs?

Saurabh: I wish to get through IIT Bombay or Kanpur.

Careers360: Which is your preferred Engineering branch?

Saurabh: My preferred branch is Electrical Engineering. However, I have kept my options open. That depends on my performance in JEE Advanced 2014 and counseling sessions thereafter.

Careers360 wishes all JEE Main Aspirants Good Luck for the upcoming JEE Main!

Saurabh: We hope next year your interview features in this E-book!
