1. This animal’s scienti�c name, Halichoerus grypus, derives from the Greek words meaning "hook-nosed sea pig."

2. These animals can dive up to 475 ft deep and can remain underwater for up to 20 minutes at a time.

3. Due to global climate change, the breeding grounds of these animals are changing, forcing them to travel further to mate – which may lead to a decline in the number of pups born each year.

2. The biggest threat to these animals is humans and habitat destruction. Although once almost extinct in the Southwest-ern United States, 34 were reintroduced into the Blue Mountains on the Arizona and New Mexico border.

3. They are carnivores and often prey on animals larger than they are, including caribou and elk. In fact, adults have 42 teeth compared to 32 for adult humans.

4. They are the largest wild members of the dog family and depending on their subspecies they can weigh between 50 and 85 pounds.
